I doubt there`ll be any tolkien fans hardcore enuf on this forums to answer this question but ill ask anyway and hope.

Anyway, ive been trying to learn more about the history of middle-earth and all that stuff so ive been reading all the books like the silmarillion and the downfall of Numenor [Allekebeth or woteva its called] and [of course] LOFR and the Hobbit several times.

Ive jsut finished reading the appendices of LOTR and there`s something i cant figure out:

Who was the author of the Red Book [Apendix A]?

Dont be a smart arse and say tolkien. I mean which character wrote it. I thought it was Meridoc but [unless Tolkien fucked up] it couldnt be because in the red book it has a section about the death of aragorn and meriadoc died before aragorn [acordding to the time line in Appendix B]. LIke, it had to be writeen by a hobbit but i cant figure out who.
Cheers if you are actually able to help me.

It was Merry and Pippin. Look on page 992 of the lord of the rings,(in one book) and you will find your answer.

Actually, you can find it easier in The Lord of the Rings Prologue. It might be Bilbo Baggins!!!

Wasn't it both Bilbo and Frodo? Hm.

I think he might be right. but I still think that it is just Bilbo.

After all, the Red Book includes Frodo's story, correct? And who else could write that but Frodo?

I am also in part corroborated by the end of the movie version of ROTK, in which Frodo is writing his own story in a red book, right after "There and Back Again"...written by Bilbo.

The Red Book (which by the way isn't only contained in Appendix A, there's a lot more to it) was begun by Bilbo after his adventure, and continued by Frodo after the War of the Ring. When Frodo departed for the Havens he gave it to Sam, and when Sam in his turn departed for the Havens he gave it his daughter Elanor. I quote from the Tale of Years:
"[Sam] comes to the Tower Hills, and is last seen by Elanor, to whom he gives the Red Book afterwards kept by the Fairbairns."
