my best friend and I are planing a trip to Kyoto Japan in 2 years, hes a little fluent in japanese but im not. Since I heard its such a fucking hard language 2 years should be enough to carry on a conversation. Any of you know any certain books that can help me learn this shit, and fast?

I went to Japan last July, and trust me you don't need to know much at all to get around. They have more English posted over there than their own language. Also, almost everyone you meet will be able to carry on a conversation with you (on a Jackie Chan style level) in English. If you really insist on adding extra head aches to your schedule by trying to learn one of the hardest languages in the world without an instructor...I suggest going to your local library. That's where I picked up a lot of useful words from books.

You can't learn it from a book. You need to learn it from an instructor. I guess it's possible, but it would be insanely difficult.

I'm taking Chinese in college :D:D:D

Yeah, learning Japanese from a book is virtually IMPOSSIBLE. Get at least an audio tape of something...anyhow, the SPEAKING and UNDERSTANDING someone who's talking to you isn't what's hard, it's the reading and the writing that's bad.

Japanese students all take English in school, but it's not.... you know, English, if you know what I mean. You also have to know thier customs, because (supposedly) it's hella easy to offend someone using 'western' gestures.

learn hiragana and katakana before you come and you`ll be as fine as @possible with reading. you wont have time to learn all the kanji. there is about 2000, i know about 300 and ive been here for three months plus studied in oz for 5yrs.
lonely planet books are the best, get the tiny yellow lonely planet phrase book, its very useful.
but you can easily get arund with out knowing jap. enough ppl know english and there is enough english around.
if you go to kyoto, you gotta see the SANJUUSAN-GENDO. its not very popular cause you cant take photos thus it doesnt get any attention. but its awesome. there is like 1001 of these man-sized buddhist statues all lined up. very impressive to see.

Now that was priceless I tell you! Priceless!

Oh forgive me, back to the subject..... There are some good books and such by Tohru Shishigami but still the best way to learn is to take a course and have a teacher and such..... (I`ve planned this, since Im goign to Japan two, and when I meet Shigeru Miyamoto I want to be able to comunciate with my Idol...... Yes, i know .... Call me insane........
