The gaming year finally started, and it came in this brilliant, virtuoso title by ID. After so much waiting and so much patience, a superb work of art and gameplay has arrived. Hit detection tweaks aside, this is an outstanding game and the current front-runner of the games released in 2004 for GOTY.

I need a new graphics card guys. Suggestions?

I wish I could run this game at a better quality but I'm stuck with medium on 800x600 cause my card sucks. Could be RAM too but I doubt it.

You might want to take a pass, judging from these specs.

Hoo boy... I have to explain this too...

This is when the gaming year is finally going to get good. We've had solid, if unspectacular material, from January to July. Now, the good stuff begins. Fable, San Andreas, MGS3, Metroid Prime 2, Half-Life 2, and GT4.

Freeman, I would pass up on those specs as well. They are like the absolute minimum requirments. You won't have fun. Just save a bit longer and make a better investment.

Gamespot held a poll...the majority of people wanting this game "left it in 2001"...that was sad, I'm getting this game though, for pc...because cronicles of riddick was so choppy on my xbox, and this game look better then that...I hate to see how it preforms...

The engine is brilliant, the graphics are billiant and the sound is fucking great. But The game has some flaws imo. After you have played through it for about 8 - 10 hours you should be about at the half way point. At this point I started to get really bored with everything. You just go from cramped room to cramped room killing the same enemies over and over. I have started to neglect the game. I will pain through this boring part of the game and see if it gets any better this weekend however. Also, a lot of things in the game and story are very similar to other first person shooters. Like the very start is very similar to Half Life and there is also a little train level thing like in half life.

I kinda liked the old Doom games, and this one looks amazing. If I had a computer that was good enough to play the game decent I would get the game. (well, after the price drops)

I loved the old Doom games. They got my into FPS'. Me and my friend would stay up all night playing Doom 2. I would be the mover he would be the shooter and opener, we were unstoppable.

Well i've been playing for a few days and I'm dissapointed in the game. Aside from the graphics its not too great. Nothing else really stands out..

The multiplayer is worthless pretty much (only 4 players per server, and only a few maps). Single player is good but it has a lot of flaws IMO. It's not that scary, story is not that good, environments weren't as destructable as I hoped, it's predictable, has very basic gameplay, and has repetitive areas, etc. And lots of other small flaws.

Pro A.
08-05-2004, 10:24 PM
Similar flaws that Half-Life had. Claustrophobic and repetitive. No real story (not like Doom really needs one to enjoy it). We don't need destructible environments. Let Red Faction do that. Doom is more about what is in front of you. While the game doesn't top Doom, the best PC game of all time, it does make a very servicable niche with strong gameplay that does have genuine challenge. It has the old-school idea of using your reflexes to win. I didn't find it scary, either, but a lot of people that I know do find it scary. Call that a wash.

Give the multiplayer a chance. In a few months, it should be better.

Doom III is a master work of art. The gameplay could have had a little more variety, but why carp? This is a genuinely creepy game with real challenge and really good gameplay. Half-Life was more repetitive than this and it had less depth.

I'm not touching this until I know my computer can handle it (Pentium 4 2.53, 512 DDR RAM, 128 mb. Graphics card (Radeon 9000 agp pro)) and they make the multiplayer worth playing.

The game was made to run on slower systems at lower resolutions.

I am currently viewing this game @ 1280x1024 at high detail with Eye candy on, compliments of my Athlon 64 3200+ and my geforce 6800 GT 256MB card....

Hey, before you complain, take into condieration that I had a 500 MHz Pentium 3 system since 1999!

Wonderful graphics, but gets boring. multiplayer Halo online is a blast on the Pc, and it looks better too.

For those of you that think you are not going to have the hardware that you need to play DOOM 3, the fact of the matter is that many of you will be just fine, although an upgrade may still be in your future. As of this afternoon we were playing DOOM 3 on a 1.5GHz Pentium 4 box with a GeForce 4 MX440 video card and having a surprisingly good gaming experience. Even a subtle jump to an AMD 2500+ with a GeForce 3 video card that is two years old will deliver a solid gaming experience that will let you enjoy the game the way id Software designed it to be. That fact alone should let many of you know that you will not be left behind in experiencing DOOM 3.

hehe, my first 3d game, those were the days. that and the nightmares that followed......... 5yos should not play that game.......

is doom3 like a remake of doom1 again? like i mean story wise? is it still about the demons coming through the gates on PHobos and Deimos and stuff?

Man, i want a doom game based on the book quintilogy [is that how you say series of 4?]. that was a great 4 books with really good storyline, IMO. Anyone else read them?

It is quadrilogy. First off, I believe most fan fiction is crap.

Doom III is an original game in its own right. It pays homage to the original, Half-Life, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and a few other games.

^have you actually read the doom books? they`re really good. they basically take the half page of story from the front of the doom instruction manual and turn it into this great original bloody...thing. anyone who loves doom should read them, they`re great.

It out performed all nvidias in the class (9600 did as well with amazing overclocking potential...)

The multiplayer is somewhat lacking. Your connection needs to be above 128Kbps, so no dial up, and it only has 4 players (although there are mods out which will allow 16, or maybe 32, I don't remember), and there's only like 5 maps to choose from.

On the up side, the actual multiplayer gameplay is fun, cuz the shadows and lighting add sooo much to the game. You can easily get scared by your own shadow. The levels are interactive, for example in one level there's this chamber and overlooking the chamber is this control room. In the control room is a computer panel and when you click on it, the chamber below locks all it's doors and if your enemy is in there you get to see him die a horrible machine-induced death. It's actually pretty amusing.
