View Full Version : Did Microsoft really buy Rare? (My opinion on this whole thing.)

I've seen people complain that nintendo did a stupid thing by selling rare along with PD and other franchises to microsoft. so what. Microsoft did not buy rare, they just brought the name. think about it, some(or most) of the people who worked on Goldeneye and PD left rare(free radical or other developers). So if most of the real people who made rare what it was, left the company, does it count that they are still one of the best there is? I'm not saying that they are bad now, but they were good because nintendo had influence on Rare. Now with microsoft, i don't think they would tolerate a game per year or two. So will that affect those used to having time to perfect a game? Who knows, time will tell. Rare may be gone but the ensence of rare lives on in those former Rare employees. Microsoft may have those beloved franchises, but they don't have all the people who made rare and those games what they are. So if those games come out awsome or crappy, it's because of microsoft did it not rare.
thanks for reading
what's your opinion?

I love this how Nintendo fans couldnt stop ranting about Rare and now that MS owns them they claim Rare isnt all that great.

You're not kidding; Nintendo fanboys/loyalists defended the Rare rumors to death (claiming the rumors were bull). Now that Microsoft has purchased Rareware (100%, completely), Nintendo fans have been rationalizing the whole situation- bitching about how Rare isn't a good developer anymore, and how Nintendo is better without them...
They can rationalize, cover up and make all the excuses they want...

Chrono i didn't mean to point it at anyone in particular, sorry about that. i don't own an xbox but i have acess to one, actually i've borrowed one from my friend for my PS2. i think xbox is good but i just don't like bill gates business practices and most of there games don't appeal to me. i like innovation, maybe thats why i buy stuff from nintendo. all the consoles out are great pieces of technology.

Eh, Xbox doesn't have much now (Halo, PGR, DOA3 and RalliSport are all this gamer owns), but Xbox a lot of great games on the way -- Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden, Brute Force, Doom III, Blinx, Project Ego, Unreal Championship, Shenmue II, DOA 4, Panzer Dragoon Orta, ToeJam & Earl, Psychonauts, DOA: XBV, PGR2, RSC2, House of the Dead, Splinter Cell, etc...
Don't think I'm an Xbox whore, I own GCN, and actually plan on getting a PS2 (all three systems have great games on the way).

I understand what defgamer is saying, alot gamers seemed to have forgot that FreeRadical Design is made up of key Rare ex-employees. And I think this is part of the reason the Stamper brothers decided to sell their share of the company. Nintendo knew that these developers were gone and their positions at Rare made a significant impact on the quality of there games, which probably to Nintendo making the decision to sell their share instead of buying the whole company. Nintendo gamers now reminded that key developers behind Goldeneye, and PerfectDark have been gone for nearly two years, which has given Ngamers a reason to not feel like their loosing something important to the success of the Gamecube. Its like the Wachowski Brothers not directing the Matrix sequels it just wouldn't be the same.

defgamers has a point.. With Free Radical and now this Zoonami (or whatever they're called) appearing, it just makes you wonder how many employees have actually left Rare within the past couple of years. It's been quite a while since Perfect Dark (there last FPS) was made... I wonder if they've still got it.. ah well... we'll find out soon enough I guess.
