Have you guys seen the iMac G5?

http://images.apple.com/imac/images/indextop20040831.jpg

It was just unveiled today, and I'm very impressed. The Apple main page has a tagline that says, "From the creators of iPod," implying that this is the iPod of PCs. It also seems to be an attempt to bring in Windows users familiar with the iPod, but not with Apple's line of PCs. What do y'all think? Will it work? And does it not look totally rad?

will it work...no.

but i do like how its all in one. However at the same time i am a bit worried about it being so close together. Although this model seems to have wal mountable written all over it.

If only more programs were compatible with Mac's.

The reason for that kevin is because of exe files. Macs dont read them because they are easily hack into, so apple has raped security on thier products. And there are plenty of programs on it. Se that little dock on the bottom of that screen? All of those are programs, and then some.

^ Plus, Microsoft produces an application called Virtual PC, so you can run Windows, and Windows programs on your Mac.

This is pretty sweet. I really think this is neat. I'm checking out the prices now. Hope they aren't so expensive.

EDIT: # NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics processor with AGP 8X support
# 64MB of dedicated Double Data Rate (DDR) video memory

Is that any good? Just wondering.

Geforce 5200 mobile? Not really. It is ok, but don't plan on high intensity 3D games...Which will probably be scare outside of Unreal 2004 and a handfull of others.

I am not impressed that they only included 256MB of RAM with the base system, but nice they finally enclosed the G5 in the smaller form factor. I just wished they would have launched a laptop first before this product, unless they want to test out the Small enclosure around the G5 in the public field, and gain some revenue in the process.

Please note : Virtual PC is not compatable with all software. Also note that there is a performance hit of processor emulation of a x86 processor on the MAC's G# processor. I

No, you're not going to have much fun trying to play Unreal Tournament 2004 via Virtual PC (good thing there's a Mac version), but my point is that if you have to have Windows to run a program for work, school, etc., Virtual PC can do that for you. And yes, it won't run as fast as it would on an x86 processor because it's emulated. Still, it's a great application that Microsoft will probably improve on now that they have purchased it from Connectix.

I agree that 256 is a small amount of RAM, but it's twice what you need to run OS X comfortably, and you can always expand. As for the laptop, Apple is on record as saying that thus far they've been unable to effectively cool the G5 processor in an enclosure as small as a Powerbook. It'll likely still come, just not right away.

^Atleast they arent rushing it. I talked to out CTS teacher and he said he won't get any of those in this year because you can buy 2 emacs for the same price. I'm going to keep trying to convince him. Our school only uses Apple so this is the best choice.

^ Remind him that Apple makes a less expensive education-only model that has fewer features, and therefore a lower price. You can view through education wing of Apple's online store.

He knows, he said he can get one for about $1600 canadian or 2 emacs. I think I may be able to convince him. It will take time.

Mac's suck and they are a great giant waste of money and time. Stick to the IBMs because they actually work and becasue all the cool kids are doing it.

Ahh, the inteligent response. Anyway, if someone wants a mac, and doesnt plan on serious gaming they wont be disapointed. Macs work, and usually better than their "IBM" compatable counterparts.

That being said all PC's(macs/win) are, in this day and age, pretty damn good. If the design impresses you and you are not a heavy PC gamer, nothing excpect cost should hold you back from buying a mac. I have a Pc and my bro has a mac, all our software works together. Office, Messenger, itunes, and we connect over our network, no problems. they both just work. I for one want the new imac, and if i can get 1500 dollars i will get one.
