Just three weeks and change before E3 2003, LucasArts announced today a new game headed to Xbox, PS2 and PC: Secret Weapons Over Normandy, an aerial combat game inspired by its celebrated Secret Weapons series.
Secret Weapons Over Normandy will focus on story-driven flight action in which players control authentic World War II aircraft in 30 of the War's most exhilirating air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. As a member of a secret squadron of elite pilots, players can take to the skies in more than 20 realistically modeled fighters and bombers as they engage in dogfights over the turbulent skies of 15 unique combat theaters including Europe, the Eastern Front, North Africa, China-Burma-India, and the Pacific.
The game, which is scheduled to ship this fall, is being developed by Totally Games, the same studio behind the X-Wing series and LucasArts' previous Secret Weapons games. This newest title will follow a historically accurate timeline of key conflicts, beginning with the dramatic Evacuation of Dunkirk; the fierce Battle of Britain; Germany's daring planned invasion of England, known as Operation Sea Lion; the pivotal Battle of Midway; and culminating in the war's most brutal battle, the D-Day invasion.
Secret Weapons Over Normandy will feature the voice of Will Lyman, best known for his narration of the PBS series "Frontline." Famed Japanese actor Mako, star of the motion picture "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (and also recently announced as one of the voices in True Crime: Streets of L.A.) will deliver authentic World War II Japanese Imperial dialect. The game's sound effects have also been derived directly from field recordings of actual World War II-era aircraft, which should add to the authenticity of the aural environs.
The Xbox and PS2 versions will offer single and multiplayer cooperative modes, and the PC version will include a mission-builder that will allow players to create their own World War II experience.
LucasArts has released six screens of the early build, four pieces of concept art and four models of the authentic aircraft. You can check them out by visiting the game's official site.
