View Full Version : Car Trivia!

Okey Dokey, lets have a trivia contest! I ask a car question, the person who gets it right then asks their own trivia question. Only a couple rules:
-No googling anything. I'm sure each and every one of these questions could be answered by a simple search. I trust that most people in this board are dignified enough to not cheat.
-If you don't post your question within 24 hours, then any can post their own trivia question.

What does the "40" in the Ford GT40 stand for?

What does the "40" in the Ford GT40 stand for?

No clue, the only thing I know is that it was made to specifically built to beat Fearri at Le Mans

Crow

nope higher Viper

Colin™
09-09-2004, 07:27 PM
Dude, I mean like actual trivia questions. Like the size of an engine or the year a car came out or what a turbo does. The time it takes a car to get from 0-whatever doesn't even have a right answer. It depends on who's driving it, especially if its a manual. Try again.

6.0 second

Viper
09-09-2004, 07:27 PM
I was hoping the name of the car was its clue, such as the Ford GT40. Now everyone is going to google it.

5.0?

Crow
09-09-2004, 07:29 PM
nah still higher but you where closer with your last one, confusing i know but when you get it you'll understand and i couldn't find a good question :(

Hey, my turn to ask a question! :) That was just a random guess too, Viper...

Riddle me this: What are the three top-selling cars of all time in order from 1 to 3?

The Dude
09-10-2004, 05:00 AM
Toyota Corolla/Camery is #1, Ford F150, and ?

Relient J
09-10-2004, 05:03 AM
You got one right, the Corolla. I'm not sure if the statistics I'm citing just counted trucks out entirely, or if the F-150 really isn't up there, but the F-150 is incorrect.

Viper
09-10-2004, 05:04 AM
Dude, the Vectors are built in two places, Green Cove Springs and Jacksonville, the latter 5 blocks from where I use to live.

The VW Beetle is number 2 or 3.

Yeah, but I asked were their based at (HQ) They had ties with NASA to help develop their cars. I know that the F-150 is the best selling ford, and the best selling pick up truck

Started in the US, moved to Italy in hopes of gaining a better market and came back to the US in Jacksonville after Italians proved they didn't want an American supercar..

The Golf!

I didn't know that was a popular car?

Relient J
09-10-2004, 01:37 PM
You got it, Kevin! It's the second best-selling car of all time. Last year it surpassed the Beetle to become the number two automobile. Golf's are not as popular in America as they are overseas, particularly in Europe, because Americans have a strange fixation with having trunks as opposed to hatchs. It is often the best selling car in Europe. Your turn, Kevin!

4...

wrong! 4g64 is the 2.4 liter Non turbo SOHC engine found in 95-99 Non turbo Eclipse spyder.

The correct answer is 4g63. Can't belive no one caught on, considering I posted it a thounds times in these fourms, its the same engine that rests under my Talon. :) 4g63 is used in 90-99 Eclipse Talon and Lasers as well as the Lancer Evolutions.

Xer0

^Not sure about the engine name, but its from the Pontiac Vibe GT, Matrix XRS, Corrolla XRS, and the Celica GT. Toyota makes it. As for the name, again, i have no clue.

What was the first car to have an automatic transmission and what was the name of the transmission?

Xer0
11-24-2004, 04:44 AM
A Mercedes-Benz!!! Actually i have no clue

Edit: Well it turns out that is was actually based off of German technology, however the first was actually GM that invented it in 1938, called Hydra-matic Drive (fun title huh?), and it was first used in Oldsmobiles in 1940.

Wraith554
11-24-2004, 05:01 AM

lol, good answer, but no. And hey, 260 Lb/ft isn't that bad for a V6.

goku2057
11-26-2004, 02:28 AM
Isn't that meant to compete in Rally?

Xer0
11-26-2004, 02:53 AM
^not that i know of yet as it is still a new system, but its an AWD system that most of the time remains in a 70-30 power split, front-rear. However the cool part about it is that it can go from the 70-30 split to putting 100% of the power to just one wheel, to help for some sweet ass handling.

goku2057
11-28-2004, 09:31 AM
That's kinda like Subaru's DCCD (Driver's Center Control Differential) i believe, although they be full time 50-50 AWD cars.

You can basically switch it from like 90-10 to 10- 90 and everywhere in between.

Xer0
11-29-2004, 07:22 AM
^thats pretty cool, and im not sure about the subbie system, but the Honda SH system can put 100% percent of the power to just ONE wheel, depending on how much power that wheel needs to round a turn. Its kinda nifty.

goku2057
11-29-2004, 05:49 PM
Well, automatically, or manually?

That's how most all (that I know of) AWD systems work. They put the power to the wheel that gets the best traction.

I know Subaru and Audi's do that, not sure about the Honda though.

The Dude
11-30-2004, 05:37 AM

Audi's quattro system is far more advance then your Subaru's active differential.

It works so well, they banned it in most forms of pro motor sports, along with the Skyline's ETTESA (I think thats the name) awd system

goku2057
01-24-2005, 04:58 PM
That's cause on the Skyline you could switch it on the fly. AWD, FWD, RWD, pick your poison, the Skyline could be it.

I'd like to try to jumpstart (please pardon the pun) this thread again if I may:

What is the name of the Studebaker coupe introduced in 1962 that was later brought back by a separate company after the demise of Studebaker?

cpiasminc

I think that was the Avanti -- which I think became a company all on its own.

masonite

ohk, no one's posted anything on this thread, so i hope no-one minds if i kickstart it....

what manufacturer was the first to use a CVT in one of their models, and what did they call the CVT?

cpiasminc
10-21-2005, 10:01 PM
The most recent *named* CVT I recall was Audi's Multitronic. It's hardly the first, though. I recall Subaru making the first *electronically* controlled CVT back in the 80's (they put it in the Justy), but I forget what they called it.

yeh, it was still quite some time before that, no electronics in there though.....here a hint: the manufacturer no longer makes cars anymore......

Datson? They still make cars though, although they're Nissian now...

cpiasminc
10-25-2005, 07:13 PM
Nissan has a kind of cool implementation of the twin-pulley CVT in the Murano -- they toy with the clamping pressures so that the belt is in compression rather than in tension.

There's a boatload of long defunct auto manufacturers now, but the only one I can think of that actually used a CVT would be DAF... don't know why I remember that at all, but I haven't the foggiest remembrance of what they called it or what models they put it in.

beautiful stuff mate.

the "variomatic" was used by DAF in the 1958 DAF 600, and used rubber belts. the CVT also meant the car could go as fast in reverse as it could forwards.....
i really didn't think you'd get that one.....nice work.
