How about them classic PC games that made you want to never leave your house remade into cliched, unrehearsed shit, aye?

I downloaded the demo for Doom III roughly three million hours ago, played it in full entirity, downloaded the bittorrent (I'm legal :)) of the full Doom III, and then proceeded to stab myself in the heart.

What is it that makes a great game? What is it that truly defines your new soon-to-be classic game from all the others?

I don't really give a shit, but whatever it is, Doom III doesn't have it.

How long did it take to make this game? Longer than Half-Life 2. George McW Senior was in office when they started announcing Doom III and showing off the first screens.

No more originality! Where's the face of the guy that looks like hes having an angry Todd Macfarlane orgasm when he's hurt? Where's the weird storyline usually ending with something you could hardly understand unless you delved into the depths of your very own wet dreams? I'm angry.

Doom III brings pain to your heart and soul. It can be compared to turning Bubble Bobble into a racing game.

^ In most reviews the reviewer said the gameplay was really the same shoot everythign you see like the last Doom, and they even said the game doesn't really scare you, but that the atmosphere was so dark and believable it made it an enjoyable, entertaining game. I haven't tried the game, but I'm going to dl the demo next week sometime, see if you're right or not.

As long as all you have to do is blow shit up, I'm all for it. I havn't played it yet but I'd like to. DOOM should be nothing more than a mindless shooter.

the reviewers forgot to mention its irritating as hell.

and yeah, a mindless shooter was what i was expecting, praying for, dearly needing in this world today lacking of mindless shooters. but i recieved something that attempted to incorporate terrible voice acting and plot.

The atmosphere was bad ass...even in the demo. It's dark, use the flashlight, best damn lighting ever, you see evil creature ready to lunge at you but you have to switch from the flashlight to your weapon. Now you can barely see. The first few encounters like that are incredible. The PDA thing is a bit unique.

For mindless shooting with a sense of tension, it is great.

If you want something that works just your brain, try Myst.

If you want both, try Resident Evil.

Well, considering DOOM 1 was released in '93, and Bush's presidency ended in '92, I think it's safe to say that you're wrong ;).

I did not like Doom 3 much at all.

One of the big problems with Doom 3 was that iD didn't seem to know what type of game it should be. I mean, its supposed to be a mindless run and gun shooter but then they make you stop and listen to/read PDA's for passcodes and such.

The atmosphere was great but the gameplay was not.

i was making an exaggeration that the game had been in development for way too long, and you would have expected more of a good game from how long ago they announced it to when they released it.

Doom 3 has fantastic atmosphere. I also liked how there's no music in the game; it really adds to the mood.

I liked the game...until the 15 hour point. It got realllllly repetitive for the last two-three hours and really lame.

Doom 3 was shit, it got so boring half way through because every dark shitty little room just spawns imps, 2 in front and one behind, over and over and over and over again. It tries to hard to scare you and that makes the game boring, and the whole really dark environment becomes nothing more then really fucking annoying.

Guy who created Spawn.

Doom III is supposed to be mindless fun, nothing more. On that basis, it deliveres in spades with a long, engrossing title. Until San Andreas came out, it had been the best game of 2K4.

Perhaps the games expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil will HOPEFULLY fix some of the issues the first game had. Im pissed I quit playing Far Cry to play Doom III

I dont know about you guys, but most of the time, I could care less about a plot. For me, it's all about gameplay. I mean, think about all the old games that were so great, the ones that you played over and over again. Like Sonic the Hedgehog. Nobody would really understand the plot from just the game, yet it's still incredibly fun to play over and over again.

Are there any games that are less than 3 years old that you actually enjoy playing through more than once? I can't think of any...

Games like KotOR where you can change the story by using different actions attrack me to play through them at least twice, other then that the only game in the last 3 years that I have wanted to play through more then once was Rome: Total War.

I am going to have to agree with this. I did not like Doom 3 either. I was excited because I remember the days of Doom and Doom 2. Right after Wolfenstein and introduced every ones favorite shotgun (the weapon of choice).

So I was excited about the game. I DLed the full version, to test before I buy (demo was not yet availble) and played for a while. The game was a big dissappointment. I was not all that amazed like I was lead up to be.

Graphics are alrigh, and the dark atmosphere is alright with imps jumping at you, but its really easy/mindless to play. Not much of a challenge. Ammo every where, easy slow monsters, same old enviroments.

Needless to say, I will not be adding this one to my collection.

I hope you seeded the torrent over 100% ratio. :p

Doom 3 just seems like a 'blast everything that moves' game, which gets boring after a few hours.

I tried the demo on a friends PC, wasn't all that impressed outside of visuals.

For mindless shooters, Serious Sam does it for me.
