Stop bumping threads. This place isn't that busy and you don't need to be double posting. I'm sure if anyone had any questions about him, they'd ask it here, or better yet, look for it on www.google.com

ok?

Shouldn't this be in Entertainment?

Samwise Gamgee

No, it's a question.

Dorbin

Yes it should, Suzuki. Thanks for pointing it out.

It may be about questions Sam, but that's irrelevant...it isn't general questions, but those of a more specific nature (it has to do with books, i.e., entertainment).

Moved.

Samwise.. who were the 4th and 5th Wizards, and what did they do? (besides gandalf, saruman, Radagast).. I dont think Tolkein ever said, but I have always been curious. (he said somewhere there were 5 in the order)

Vishus

I only heard of 3 wizards and there were only three wizards. http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm < best tolkien site ever!

Although some answers are hard to find on that site.

What happened to Radagast? It eventually boiled down to Gandalf and Saruman only.

umm, no. when the Isatari came to Middle Earth, there were 5 of them. Radagast just hung out with the animals and smoked weed.. Gandalf and Saruman were the only 2 of any importance. The other 2 were never mentioned by name (as far as I know) and apparently were insignificant.. but in the appendecies at the end of ROTK and some other parts.. Tolkein says there are 5.

he could fire so well because he is the pricne of the elves that live in Mirkwood, they see good there... in the darl\k... yeah.

You're right there were 5 but only 3 of them were considered wizards but only 2 of them played big roles for what their purpose was. The other 3 just became unknown when Gandalf and Saruman started getting to the point of their roles.

Because Elves have a better sense of site than Men, Dwarves, etc.

I'm assuming you've read the Silmarillion, otherwise the answer to your question won't make a heap of sense. It was Manwe who sent the Istari to Middle Earth to contest the power of Sauron. His original plan was to send only 3. Curumo (Saruman) and Alatar (one of the Blue Wizards) volunteered to go, but nobody else was willing. Then Manwe called for Olorin (Gandalf) to join them. He at first refused thinking himself too weak, but Manwe commanded him, and he was also encouraged by Varda (this is the beginning of Saruman's hatred towards Gandalf). Saruman took with him Aiwendil (Radagast) at the prayer of Yavanna, and Alatar took Pallando (the other Blue Wizard). A quote from Unfinished Tales:
"Of the Blue little was known in the West...for they passed into the East with Curunir, but they never returned, and whether they remained in the East, pursuing there the purposes for which they were sent; or perished; or as some hold were ensnared by Sauron and became his servants, is not now known."

EDIT: If you visit the Encyclopedia of Arda posted earlier about Draygus you can read about Pallando and Alatar.

And yes, the Silmarillion is a lot tougher than LOTR, because it's not written in a narrative style.

There isn't much Dialog!
Yeah but there doesn't need to be. The stories are great. I think it'd make an awesome video game...storming Thangorodrim as Beren and Luthien, battling Morgoth with Fingolfin and Glaurung with Turin, and the countless other battles that occur throughout. Eh, it'll never happen though.

man, great thread, i was gonna make one just like it. i bought two books with me to japan: the silmarillion and LOTR. so far i`ve read both 3 times and am starting LOTR again. wish i had some of the History of Middle-earth books.
okay, i thought of this one last night, when i go home i`m gonna try makeing some really hard ones for you.

Okay, during the reign of Echelion II in Gondor [father of Denethor] there was some mysterious guy who turned up and like helped the stewart in the wars of gondor. and he like lead a small group to the ports of Umbar where all the rebels from the kin-strife were and burnt a heap of their ships and pissed them off heaps. then instead of returning to gondor he like left and dissapeared east.like most people believed he left because denethor hated him and thought that this newcomer was gonna try to take the throne from him. i forget this strangers name, started with a th or something. was this guy aragorn? i think it was but i couldnt find anything in the appendicies that say it is. only had a quick flick through them all but.

Tolkiens best writing was about Turin and Hurin and the curse Morgoth lay on their family. How morbid and sad was that?!

This is my 100th post.

I've read the Silmarillion.
It was difficult.

i didnt understand it the first itme i read it. like everyone has the same name and all the places have similar names and stuff. but you read it three times in a row with constant checks at the index at the back when you see a new name and it makes sense. the silmarillion is absolutely brilliant piece of writing. but in my silmarillion it doesnt say anything about the other 2 Istari. it just says :`the other 2 went far into the east and dont come into these tales`. but i havent read unfinished tales yet, its on my to do list when i return to oz.

EDIT: whoops, double post, my bad :(

Cofey
10-01-2004, 11:36 PM
^Shadowrunner, the man you're thinking of was Aragorn, the alias he was using was Thorongil, "Eagle of the Star." The information about the Blue Wizards is in Unfinished Tales. There are some really cool stories in there, I highly recommend it, as well as the Book of Lost Tales 1 and 2.

shadowrunner
10-04-2004, 04:29 AM
^Thorogil! that was it! cheers, i thought it had to be aragorn but i wasnt sure.

yeah, unfinsihed tales, lost tales and history of middle earth are all on my `to-buy` list when i get back to oz. and i have to re-read my big tolkien encyclopedia thats still in oz. i bought that before i read the silmarillion and i was like, `morgoth? who the fuck is morgoth? whats the fuck are silmarils? its the war of the rings! not jewels you stupid book!`

lol, i know better know. cant wait till i get back to oz and read all those. another question, where does bombadil fit in it all? like is he a Mair [or however you spell it - the weak valar] or something? he says he`s older than the elves and stuff so all i can think of is he`s a mair [that really isnt how you spell it] or a valar and he aitn a valar. so yeah, what is he gollum?

Cofey

Well I don't ever recall reading anything specific about how he came to Middle Earth or what he really is. I have The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, which I thought would explain it all, but it turned out to be a book of poetry and songs. I really have nothing to back up my claim, but I believe he is a maiar. What else can he be?

EDIT: Check out this article, it's very interesting, and answers your question much better than I can.

http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm

I find this quote very interesting:
"And even in a mythical Age there must be some enigmas, as there always are. Tom Bombadil is one (intentionally)."
The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, No 144, dated 1954

This really confirms that, despite all the theories and speculation, we don't know for sure what he is, and we're really not supposed to.

shadowrunner
10-05-2004, 02:55 AM
^cool thanx.

yeah, i got the adventures of tom bombadil as well and it didnt make much sense to me. ^_^

all those tolkien books like Farmer Giles of Ham and those other ones, do any or all of those have anything to do with middle-earth or are they totally differnt and un-related stories? and where the hell is Samwise Gamgee? you hijacked his thread gollum!lol.

Cofey
10-05-2004, 04:58 PM
^I haven't read Father Giles of Ham, but I do have it...it looks like it takes place in Great Britain, nothing to do with Middle Earth. The only books by him I haven't read that I really want to is the History of Middle Earth series. I have volumes X and XI, but it would take forever to read them all, and I really don't have the time right now. I'm in the middle of The Odyssey right now and I can't even get through that short book. So it'll be a while before I get around to reading them.

peasantlover
10-10-2004, 05:18 AM
Yah, Father Giles has nothing to do with middle Earth..
btw, gollum missed your question about Gollum, lol. Gollum was originally a hobbit.
Lol, both of your questions are found in LOTR, read it again man!
lol

Gollum, thank you very much. I have read the Similarion, but never the lost tales.. I have wondered forever about the other 2 wizards, that helps a lot.

hey, anyone read The Soddit? fuck thats funny, i reccomend it to everyone. Bored Of The Rings is OK as well but the Soddit was so funny!

and standing at his door was a giant wizard. Bingo could tell it was a wizard from the large `W` on his poncho. It was either a wizard or an extrodanarily well built munchkin who put his poncho on upside down

or something like that. its so funny. read it now gollum! NOW!!

This is not a driect question that can be answered but,
Who do you think Tom Bombadil is?

What are you guys theories about him?
Is he just an odd character?
A maia going his own way outside Illuvatars music?
Or who is he?

Cofey
10-12-2004, 12:55 AM
^This question was asked a few days ago. I always guessed that he was a Maiar, because that's the only thing that would really make sense to me. There are a few other theories however. Check this website out:

I didnt see it asked in this thread?
yeah but the site doesnt give an answer to who he was. :P
Neither did tolkien. He only declared that "There is no embodiment of the One, of God, who indeed remains remote, outside the World, and only directly accessible to the Valar or Rulers."

Also the maias are affected by the ring, but Tom is not. Both gandalf saruman and sauron are affected by it. and theyre all maias.

That's all true. I guess when you think about it he can't be a maiar either. But Tolkien had this to say about him:
"And even in a mythical Age there must be some enigmas, as there always are. Tom Bombadil is one (intentionally)."

So I guess he doesn't want us to know who or what Tom is (which of course, makes me want to know more :splitspin ).

Theres this porno called Lord Of The G-Strings. It's fucking cool. It is the story of Dildo Saggins trying to find the magical G-String. Smirnoff the Grey is in it also. He is a drunk wizard that tries to fuck Dildo and her companions. If you ever have a chance to get this porno, I reccomend it. It's funny as hell. It's only softcore though. No hardcore stuff. But the plus is that about 90% of the shit is lesbian sex.

Oh shit sorry, did I totally just fuck this thread up? Sorry. I'll leave.
