ATI Xbox 2 graphics chip ready in Q1 2005

New Xbox 2 graphics chip to be based on ATI's next-generation R520 desktop graphics processor.

Citing market sources, IT news Web site DigiTimes reports that ATI is prepared to "roll out" its Xbox 2 GPU, code-named the R500, in the first quarter of next year. According to the report, the R500 will be based on ATI's next-generation R520 desktop graphics processor, and semiconductor foundry TSMC will produce the chip using a 90nm manufacturing process.

Man, if I had an Xbox, i'd be pissed with M$. Releasing the Next Gen console right after a huge ass release (Halo 2) and not having the next system backwards compatable. That spells trouble.

Just because the chips are ready doesn't mean they're releasing the console right then and there.

yeah, they dont expect Xenon to be released till christmas 2005 or 2006.

is the n5 using the R500 as well?

If so easy ports for developers between N5 and X2

Technically, no one really knows yet but I wouldn't be suprised if the chip was very similar. It would save costs for all three companies, ATi, MS, and Nintendo and make conversions a more simpler affair, as you mentioned, then it is now.

It would make the most sense. Both MS and Nintendo are going to feature IBM processors and ATI GPUs, so i dont see why IBM and ATI wouldn't just save themselves a mess of work and make similiar processors for each system.
