Rumor #5: The Xbox 2 will use Virtual PC 7 for backward compatibility for original Xbox games.

Source: Self-explanatory site Geek.com.

The official story: Microsoft reps said they would "track down" the source of the rumor, but had not as of press time.

What we heard: According to Geek.com's Apple Insider subsection, the reason for the delay of the latest version of Virtual PC 7 is that "Microsoft has given this project exclusively to the Xbox team." Why would they do such a thing? "Because the next Xbox will include an IBM PowerPC 970, and current Xbox game developers are shipped G5 PowerMacs," says Geek.com. While not confirmed by Microsoft, it sounds like a much more plausible scenario than last week's Xbox 2-backward-compatiblity rumor, which had a Silicon Valley startup providing universal emulator middleware for the next-gen console.

Bogus or not bogus?: Probably not bogus.

I don't care either way, and I won't be getting the system until it's cheap or if I suddenly become very, very well-off. My Xbox and Tony Hawks shall serve me for a few years.

There is no possible way for Xenon to be backwards compatable. A totally different company is making the hcipset for Xenon and that means that the codes for the systems are going to be different and how they actually work is going to be different. It's impossible.

Not really...they can emulate it. You see, Microsoft bought a little company called Connectix...they are known for being able to emulate anything and have it run very smoothly...diffrent chipsets does not make it an impossibility.

They would still have to pay huge sums to nVidia or suffer court which could cause MS to shelve the Next X completely.

The question is, does MS feel that backwards compatability is worth that?

So far the answer is no, they do not and have stated several times that BC is not that important to them.

I find something really stupid with Microsoft right now...I think it's just me, but...Microsoft is reportedly trying to start a channel in which only the xbox can view...but they failed to add a harddrive when they could just add one half the size of the current, and it'd be almost a quarter of the cost, and have a bigger one that you could buy.

The ends do not justify...it will cost money to maintain the channel, probably more then the whole Harddrive incident...
