The NBA development league, which most of you have never heard of until now, is trying a new format of the rules. It stipulates that there will be no three-pointers counted until the last five minutes of the game. If a player wanted to shoot from beyond 23 feet, that would be their choice, but it would count for only two points.
The idea is to improve shooting, which sucks in America, to improve scoring, which also sucks, and to improve team play, which is terrible. The NBA has said that it will not change their rule.
Personally, I think this is a good idea. It gives the players a feel of what basketball was like before the 1980 season.

Hmm...I don't know. There could be some major complaining by the players.
I have a feeling this rule came about by the U.S. getting the Olympic bronze by the skin of their teeth. Maybe they should only enforce the rule on Shaq, Garnett, and all the other players who were scared to go to Athens. ;)

I guess the average for field goal percentage in the NBA last year was 34%. That's pretty bad. God only knows what it was when they shot 23 feet or farther.

Maybe teaching these players how to shoot would work better than that crazy crap posted in topic #1

Bah. That's gay. You can't change such a well established rule. That's like ruling homeruns foul balls until the last two innings.

That would be a lame rule. They need to just develop better shooting skills or face the consequences - losing.

How does abolishing the 3-point line improve shooting? All it does is give an advantage to the taller players who just tap the ball in like Shaq, it just steers the NBA more towards being a game of whoever is taller than the other guy.

Besides, a strictly inside game wouldn't be very fun, in fact I could see a rule like this causing the number of fouls to go way up.

A better rule change would be to make the key into a giant pit of lava. Let's just see Shaq try and score without sitting under the hoop.
thats a fucking stupid rule, thats somewhat idiotic...N00b Basketball Association at its best
that rule won't improve shooting it'll just make it worse.

what a stupid idea. My game like many others is based on being able to shoot the three ball.
The NBA has WAY too many rules to begin with - taking away teh 3 point line until a certain time would only make it more boring. I like three pointers - especially when they help teams go on a long run.

I agree completely. I don't get why they would even think about it. The sport of Basketball already owns every other one...

You guys realize that this is the DEVELOPMENTAL league, right?
I for one think this is a good idea, it will cause teamwork to be a bigger factor, and people will rely on their big name players less.

I don't think the NBA would ever stoop to the rule unless field goal percentage plummeted below 25% for the entire league. Currently, it is 34%. The development kids need this rule. Most of those kids out of college don't shoot very well to begin with.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems to me this would make shooting worse; with out 3s, players would focus more on dunks and lay ups, since they are worth the same points.
