Interesting mix of responses so far...I expected someone to say Nashville but New Jersey caught me by surprise. I can understand both answers.

I'd say either Seattle (although short lived, produced some awesome-tastic music), or Nashville.

YUeah, i was gonna say New Oleans as well. Blues and th e like.
Without blues, there would be no rap today.
there'd definately be no R&B, sure there'd be R&, thats just not enough though

Austin, TX is another good one. Same with motown (detroit).

Pfft hardly.
Manchester > London.
Also, the people from London are complete douches.
Well... can't say I know too much about cities where genres/new types of music are formed, but I do like these bands, all of which are (appearently) from Manchester:
The Stone Roses
The Verve
Oasis
The Smiths
Happy Mondays
JOY DIVISION
The Charlatans
NEW ORDER
MORRISSEY
So I guess I'll say Manchester... although Motown is good too.

It's funny how Travis thinks he's a well ard Manc like me and Macca.
Travis
11-09-2004, 11:45 PM
That's because I am a well ard Manc, fucking twat. I'll fuck your mam in the arse well good, after I spark you, fucking bender.
EDIT: Plus, you aren't Manc, you're from Testicleville.

And if I'm not a Manc, neither is Macca.

Right, OK twat I have gone to the liberty of proving this to you.
"Testicleville" is circled in red, MANCHESTER Airport is circled in purple, and that's about a whole 2 miles away. Macca's gay town is circled in blue. And seeing as Macclesfield which is classed as Manchester isn't even on that fucking map, I think I can call myself a Manc.
Greater Manchester Travis.....

Montreal has the best underground scene for all sorts of jazz and big band and rap.
Nobody can outrap the French Canadians.

I think the crown has to go to the state of Tennessee in general. Memphis and Nashville have shaped the genres of Rock, Country, and Christian. Ultimately I would give the nod to Nashville. It's not called Music City, USA for nothing.
Then again, I'm probably a little biased toward Nashville since I'm hoping to live in the area by next year.

And that effects the musical history how? Out of all the bands mentioned from Manchester I don't see one name I can see that's truely influenced music. You can't say that the bands I've mentioned haven't influenced music at all.
Travis
11-10-2004, 05:47 AM
1 great example: Happy Mondays created modern dance culture. The Hacienda in Manchester was the very first modern club. This thread is about more than just the bands, it's about the city as well. I don't see how you can say London has more musical history than Manchester, being that music is one of the main parts of Manchester's culture.
Tell me that Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays, The Smiths, Morrissey, etc etc haven't influenced music. Just because they aren't as popular as the bands you might have mentioned doesn't mean they aren't as important or more important.

it doesnt matter if they become popular or not, that has nothing to do with it, most of the best bands arent insanely popular.

Opeth, In Flames (most popular), Soilwork, Dimmu Borgir, Meshuggah, Children of Bodom, etc. are all popular in the states among the metal scene. They all have a huge following.

The music I like is so spread out, I can't say... and narrowing it down to favorite 'city' would be even harder.

Everyones forgetting a little something called the Harlem Renaissance
How come I don't know any bands you guys are talking about? My favorite band is U2. U2 > Everything. I listen to happy music. I don't listen to depressing metal music or music about "all my homies shootin in the LBC". Jack Johnson would have to be one of my favorites. Brushfire Fairytales. Ahhh, such happy music.
