Generally, I don't read fan fiction, but I make an exception for Star Wars because I love the movies so much and the books are, for the most, very well written, especially when it is by an accomplished author like Timothy Zahn or Michael A. Stackpole. I have been reading the books of late with amused interest and I have liked the way the stories have progressed into the new generation and how it has become less of a rehash. Here are my favorites of the SW canon:
1. Vision of the Future, Timothy Zahn
2. Heir to the Empire, Timothy Zahn
3. Star by Star, Troy Denning
4. Specter of the Past, Timothy Zahn
5. The Unifying Force, James Luceno

I like Darksaber, even though it has a cheap ending. The bounty hunter stories are generally pretty good, but it is easy to tell who writes the better stories and who really doesn't.

Yea, I know those books. Haven't read them, but I've read the basic plotlines about them. Its about his early days as a smuggler.

Zahn deserves a lot of credit. He set the foundation for the SW Expanded Universe with Heir to the Empire and that trilogy. He then saved the series from becoming a cult favorite with Specter to the Past and Vision of the Future. Before those two, there were too many books going in too many wild directions. Characters seemed out of place and plotlines were in danger of becoming snarled. He tightened it up and closed it out, setting up the New Jedi Order.

Another solid entry. Kevin J. Anderson, I don't think, writes Star Wars anymore. I think he was passed over when Del Rey bought the rights.

Oh yeah he's the guy who wrote the "Tales of..." books. I think.
I also have the Shadows of the Empire comic book that's about 80 pages long.

The Shadows of the Empire book is pretty good, considering it was created in a marketing room. The comic book's main character is actually Boba Fett and not the others. They're there, but they aren't the centerpiece.

My favorite is The Courtship of Princess Leia. The force witches of Dathomir were pretty cool.

I'm starting to go through the New Jedi Order series for the second time. Even though the first book, Vector Prime, was pretty controversial in 1999, it really has struck me as a very good way to show the fans of SW that there is a dark side to all of this and that it isn't fun and games. Killing off Chewie might have been, from an artistic standpoint, one of the best things that has happened to the series.

The books never made any good use of him, which is part of the reason.

I would love it if they could find a way to put the KOTR storyline from the games into the SW cannon. Technically, they would have to change a few things, like skip certain planets that weren't supposed to be found yet, etc.. I think it's a shame that they haven't expanded all that much into the Sith Wars/Mandalorin Wars like the games do.

They might write books but the comics have controlled, for the most part, everything at the timeline where KOTOR is. I've looked at their publication schedule and Episode III and the post-New Jedi Order have higher priorities right now.
