Sony is looking at 2006-8 because IBMs 'cell' chip won't be ready until then. I think Nintendo wants to jump start the next generation to quiet all the naysayers about Nintendo making another home console.

New Sony

What do you want me to say? New Nintendo? If that makes you feel better then you can think what you want :p

its obvious sony is going to be first and microsoft and nintendo right with them or after them. they are the leader, they make the moves.

Viper

Uh..No. IBM is making Sonys moves. Read up on the 'cell' chip delay.

Who said they had to go with IBM? Who said they HAD to put the cell?

"According to the reports, Kutaragi mentions that final production of the "Cell" chip, originally thought to be used in the PlayStation 3, may not be ready until 2007. He also confirms that the CPU in the PlayStation 3 will in fact not be the Cell processor, contrary to earlier reports.

With a targeted PlayStation 3 launch in 2005/2006, delayed production of the Cell processor may have caused Sony to find a different solution for their next-generation console. "

IBM isn't making Sony's moves. Sony makes Sony's moves.

Plus Nintendo really want to get a jump start so they can try and retake the #1 spot....but they will need an incredible launch game to do that so everyone will see that its the only new console plus it has a really sweat game. (kind of like X-Box did with Halo)

It's getting late to look for a new chip that will be availabe for launch in 2005. Still looking at 2006-7. The other two are on schedule to arrive in '05.
Also I wonder how the relationship between MS and Nvidia are after Nvidia took them to court over price issues with the chips it supplied MS.

So they're going to launch early..and risk Sony having a higher powered system PLUS brand recognition etc...? Seems risky to me.

Whats going to happen is Nintendo and Microsoft are going to make Xb2 and gc2 and they're probably all going to launch at nearly the same time (Xbox launch = Nov 15th, GC launch = Nov 18th last time...) No risks, no headstarts, all even. Makes sense to me.

That was coincidental delays that put them that close together. There will be a few months between the two this time. I'm pointing to Nintendo to launch first because it's on the least shaky ground with it's chip designers.

So Nintendo launches last this generation, does the worst, and launches their next system first.

Uh............ I'd have to vote a big 'no' on that one. I also say Sony.

Get back to me in 2 years and we'll see who makes the first splashdown.

....2005 is not a set release date. It's what analysts are expecting: Late 2005. That doesn't mean they're on schedule or ready to make that date because nobody knows that info. Microsoft hinted for Xbox to launch around 2006 before (they said expect to see xbox2 out by the next olympics game or next world cup or some shit that happens in 2006).

I don't see what Nintendo will gain by launching earlier then Microsoft and Sony, the 'hype machines'.

They seem to be on good terms now:

Ahead of its earnings results next week, Nvidia said that months of arbitration related to its graphics chipset had ended with an agreement that's "a win for both companies."

Nvidia now can take its partnership "to the next level," CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said in a statement. Robbie Bach, a senior vice president at Microsoft, delivered a similar message.

Microsoft and Nvidia will also collaborate on cutting the costs underlying the Xbox--no small issue, since analysts say the video-game console has so far been a money pit for the software giant.

Even then, Microsoft could design their own chips.

If you're so sure, why even make this topic/poll?

Viper

No I was stating that we will know by 2005 and could further discuss it then.

Damn, I got both box boys trying to lay the smackdown on me.

so this poll/thread is useless now?

Knowing Sony, they'll release theirs first...
Knowing Nintendo, they'll wait.
Unless NEC and ATi come up with some kickass shit really fast... That is, if ATi is still on board with N... i fucking hope so...
Anyone know whos going to make Microsofts new GPU?... The only thing i can think of is nVidia going with N, and ATi to MS... hmmmmmmmmm...
One thing i hope happens is that the NEC and the GPU maker collaborate and come up with something that compliments both processors... like the Pentium and RDRAM... or AMD and ATi chips... the buses are like made for eachother... making it allllll nice...
YAY NEC!

I think nVIDIA has actually expressed that they will be working with Sony somehow (I read it, dunno if it's true) and ATi will be with both Microsoft and Nintendo.

OoooooWAH???

Haha, that's fucked...
Hehhehehehehee... this is gonna be weird...
No, MY Nintendo ATi is better....
Noooo, MY MS ATi is better....
Wait a sec... its the same fucking thing!!!

Hey... actually, that could work out ok...
If ATi configures one chip for the different CPUs of the N and MS systems, it could be neet...
Do you think the specs for the two chips would be the same? Or would MS pump out some extra deneiro for a better one?
Hehe... Go fuckin ATi... a little company once are like the most sought after now...
:D:D

It would be stupid for Nintendo and Microsoft to launch at the same time as Sony. PS3 would grab all the sales and that's the end of that. So that possibility is out.

Microsoft wants a large userbase - they need a considerably large number of people buying their new console right away. And right now, they have 1/5 of Sony's userbase - no good. They'll definitely be the last to launch, but by just a few months. Not only does XBox have the sheer power to fight age a little longer, but production costs will have considerably dropped and - shock - MS may make a little profit with xbox.

Sony is lackadaisical about all of this. They can launch before, they can launch after. It really doesn't matter. But most probably, they'll wait until a few months before XBox2. PS2 will still be selling very nicely (and probably PSones too). Sony knows that if they put their console out before anyone else, it will sell. They also know that if they put it out after, it will sell. It doesn't matter much.

Nintendo wants to put their console 2005. You can call that the joke of the next millenium. There's no way that's going to happen. Nintendo will wait until the end of March of the year 2006. That's when it will be released - just as their fiscal year ends. It will be a big launch, but not huge - after all, it's March. That gives them plenty of time to pump out a huge library for the Christmas season, since they do take a tad long anyway.

So here's what we're looking at...

Nintendo - March, 2006
Sony - EITHER November 2005 or June/July 2006.
Microsoft - November 2006.

Nintendo wouldnt launch that early because no one would buy it if it has crap launch titles and they have to wait 9 months until the holidays to get good ones...

That whole theory is blown out of the water with this quote:

"When PlayStation 3 arrives, we'll be ready!" - Robbie Bach, Microsoft

&

"The key to success was not letting a competitor like Sony be able to exist all by itself on retail shelves like Ps2 was able to do for a year and a half. An 18 month gap is a tough gap to close. So next time they don't get any. Mr. Kutaragi [Sony's President] does not get a day ahead of us! It's going to be an even fight next time." - J Allard, Microsoft

Source: Game Informer page 35 (Issue 113 September 2002)

--------------

So we know Microsoft and Sony are going to launch at basically the same time (days apart). Nintendo would likely have no choice but to follow. Launching too late could kill a console and launching to early could kill a console (unless its Sony). Just look at what happened to DC by launching earlier then PS2. Everyone held off.

All the systems usually launch at October-Nov anyway to get in the holiday sales. Not early in the year.

I say Sony.

they seem to release quick, and pump out the products faster than... I don't know.
