The state of Illinois is pushing legislation - with the backing of Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich - that would make the sale of sexually explicit or violent videogames to minors a Class A misdemeanor, one which carries the hefty penalty of one year in prison or a $5,000 fine.* Currently, Illinois retailers may sell such violent games to those under 18, but the governor wants to crackdown.* All adult-themed games would be off-limits to children, and even games with mild violence would carry clear labels."If you're 18 or older and you're a grown-up and an adult, that's your business," Blagojevich told the Associated Press. "But I don't believe that my 8-year-old daughter has a constitutional right to cut somebody's head off in a game that she plays."Washington and Missouri have had similar legislature proposed, but in neither attempt was it adopted into law.* It should be interesting to see if Blagojevich's efforts produce any results, as it would seriously shake up the videogame purchasing climate in Illinois. We'll keep our readers posted.
