Japanese gamers juggle joy and disappointment as Sony's handheld marvel hits stores
As we speak, lucky Japanese gamers are hands on with Sony's portable games machine, PSP, despite a brutal stock shortage that will leave tens of thousands bitterly disappointed. Japanese retailers had to stop taking pre-orders weeks before the December 12th release date, with Sony, unable to meet demand. "On day one we will be shipping 200,000 units nationwide, which is not really that big a number, 'explained Sony Spokeswoman Yoshiko Furusawa, "So some retailers may not get an allocation."
After Sony's disastrous PSX (a machine containing a PS2 with HDD and TV tuner released only in Japan) launch last year, the shortage is welcome news. The situation is in marked contrast to Nintendo's new handheld, DS, where pre orders were gladly accepted for the 300,000 units available at Japanese launch.
"Demand for psp is around 25% higher than DS," explains Pascal Clarysse, marketing manager of retailer Lik-Sang.com. "There's a huge shortage," he adds. It has never happened before that even before I confirm my orders; the distributors are telling me my numbers are too high." PSP's popularity was confirmed at a recent charity event in Japan, organized to raise money for those affected by the recent earthquakes in Japan.
More will be added later.

Technically speaking, the demand really can't be higher than the DS (warrenting that there is only a certain number released every week).

Nights I don't mind you posting stuff about the PSP, but how come everything you say is also meant to stab Nintendo as well as boast about the PSP.
Heres a sample of the names of the threads you've posted in the past.

Of course it had to be higher than the DS or else Nights wouldn't have posted it. If it ain't good enough to boast, it ain't good enough to post.

What I read and hear is that Sony had major problems with pre-orders.

Sorry to interrupt, but eh...wasn't it obvious from the beginning that PSP was going to garner a "higher demand" than the DS? It's the result of Sony's marketing strategy. More Japanese gamers have DS's in their possession, and Nintendo is doing a decent job at placing DS's in prospective hands. Consequently, it's probably more accurate to focus on sales, not a supply that fails to meet demand.

It's all marketing bullshit, but this time Sony is going to fall flat on it's face.

Last I checked the DS kick Sony in the nuts over in Japan.
Oh wait, lets check the Source ahh its Playstation Magazine. Oh wow this info coming from a true unbiased media source I will buy this magazine for the truth. It is like reading Nintendo Power with them blasting on their horns "The GC is the most exciting powerful system with the best games." Same tone with what PSM brainwashes it's readers with.

That's basically what my post was saying. Although Sony's demand may appear to be higher, it's a "paper demand" created by strategic marketing.

Why don't you little guys grow some fucking balls and let him post PSP news without hearing all this bitching. Nights is doing us all a favor and if he wants to say that the PSP is better than the DS, then fucking let him! He's giving us all this great news on the PSP and every thread he makes there are a few dumbfucks bitching at him. It's annoying.
As long as we're getting good news, he can express his opinion as much as he damn well pleases.

And you guys bitch anytime we make a DS thread regarding it doing something better than the PSP.
It's going to happen both ways. Stop bitching...both sides...because Sony fans are going to slam Nintendo fans and Nintendo fans are going to slam Sony fans.
If you are going to encourage one side to report biased news, then don't complain when the opposing team does it too.

but wait a moment. DS sales have surged over 2 million in weeks whereas the PSP is still in the 200,000. Who cares about demand, when you have sales and profit. Demands don't help pay the bills.

'You guys'....that is all encompassing of sony fans that make up hte bulk of the negative posts regarding DS threads. Had I said just 'Suzuki', you'd have a better argument but I'm referring to more than just you....all of us.

^well actually, its not in the states. Its still in japan. If sony would get off their asses, open more factories, increase PSP production then they could have good sales.

I would have to agree with you, it's all Nintendo's fault for releasing their handheld in a timly fashion. Also they've been horrible because of millions of extra ships that they sent out so everyone can have one.

Normally, it would probably not be appropriate for somebody to post DS related info in a PSP thread. However, the thread title also says "even better than the DS?" Isn't it legitimate to have a rational conversation regarding the topics listed in the thread title? Without a bit of debate, these boards would be absolutely drab...which is why I truly appreciate the contributions of members like Nights, even if I don't agree with their opinions.
