Does XBOX Live let you know or do you have to manually call them up and disconnect?

No, it will automatically charge your card until you call them.

When you use the 2 month trial it is set to automatically renew unless you change it. You can change it via Account Management > Subscription. It will tell you when your subscription ends and it'll have an option to either Modify or Unsubscribe. Or you can call 1800-4MY-XBOX to cancel.

You'll also get an Email with the address you used when you registered XBL.

the dashboard takes care of it. itll ask if you want to renew it after it expires, at least i know it does with the full year subs, but im not sure about the trial versions

the year subs are better than the three/6 months because you simply dont have to worry about it for a full year, thats good for the lazy peeps like ME
