Fort Myers manufactured some runs early and Garrett Jones' three run homer in the eighth gave the Miracle a 7-1 win over the Lakeland Tigers during a very chilly game at Joker Marchant Stadium Saturday night.
Matt Yeatman pitched a good game, but got into some trouble early. Michael Woods got on base when Michael Sandoval bobbled his catch at third and then dropped the ball. Felix Molina missed a line drive that allowed Woods to advance to second. Yeatman then struck out Mike Rabelo but walked Jody Roughton to load the bases. He then struck out Chris Maples. Scott More lined out to end the inning. The second was over quickly. David Mattle hit a double but Wilton Reynolds and Woods both lined out while Yeatman struck out Anderson Hernandez.
Yeatman would finish up four innings of work with two hits and two walks while striking out five.
Erik Lohse came in for two innings in relief before Jason Miller took the hill. Miller struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh, but gave up a homer on a three-two count to Woods to start off the eighth. That would be only opportunity the Tigers would get as Miller struck out three of the next six batters he faced over the remaining two innings to end the game.
Danny Matenzio drove in Trent Oeltjen in the first, and Oeltjen returned the favor by driving in Felix Molina in the second with two outs. Matenzio walked in the third and advanced on a Doug Deeds fly ball. Jones knocked in a single to score Matenzio but tried for home on Kaulana Kuhaulua's single and didn't quite make it, ending the third.
The Tigers had one run on four hits and one error, while the Miracle had 7 runs on eleven hits and one error.
INJURY UPDATE: Garrett Guzzman and Josh Hill are "ready to go" according to Larry Bennesse, but "we've got no place to put them" as the Miracle are at their roster limit. J.C. Contreras is having elbow problems and is likely a couple more weeks out while Manny Tejada is rehabbing a shoulder injury and won't be good for another four weeks.
NOTES: Joker Marchant Stadium is a nearly straight shot up 17, just over 100 miles from Fort Myers and about a two hour drive through some of the best orchards and cow country in South and Central Florida. It's also a very nice facility with a friendly staff.
As a Miracle season ticket holder, I can get in for free to see the Miracle play there. It's one of the Florida State League perks for season ticket holders. They are the only league that offers this deal to their season ticket holders.
The Tigers sport a female public address anouncer. Oh well, there goes my long time dream of being the first female public address anouncer in the Florida State League.
I was keeping score, which the Lakeland kids found endlessly fascinating. One in particular, Eric, asked me endless questions about scorekeeping, about the game, about the players, etc. Coolie tossed me a ball around the seventh inning and I gave it to him, since he was trying valiently to get a foul, but kept getting outran by the bigger kids. His dad thanked me after the game, both the ball, and for taking so much time with his son.
Jason Miller, who hails from Sarasota, Florida, had large following in the audience.
As always, the guys were happy to see me for a road game. "How did you get here?" Larry asks. "In my little red car." "It got you this far?" "Yeah, and it should get me home too. However, if you happen to see a little red car broken down by the side of the road..." "We'll stop for you. No problem." Wouldn't have done any good as the bus took I-4 back.
