Sammy Corp. has announced a new videogame which will be a futuristic sequel to the movie of the same name...

So Sammy and Sega didn't merge. That's over with. So what's next for the makers of the Guilty Gear 2D fighting series and pachinko machines? Well, it seems that Sammy has just announced at E3 a new futuristic version of "The Seven Samurai." Scheduled for a release this fall, the game will be called Seven Samurai 20XX and is a PlayStation 2 exclusive.

Akira Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai" is one of the most widely acclaimed films of all time. The plot of the film involves itinerant swordsmen who must defend an impoverished village from marauding bandits in feudal Japan. In the US, the movie was remade by Hollywood as "The Magnificent Seven."

The planned futuristic video game sequel has been given the blessing of Kurosawa's son, but he does want to ensure that the game will capture as much as possible of the spirit of the 1954 film directed by his late father.

The plot of Seven Samurai 20XX revolves around a tribe of mechanical beasts that threaten the future of humanity, a darkening city at the center of the world -- not to mention a vanished Holy Child. Also, the game has already gained some support from renowned French comics artist Moebius, who designed over 100 of its characters, and Academy Award-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who composed the game's opening and closing theme music.
