Williams to serve four-game suspension beginning with Game 13

By BARRY WILNER, AP Football Writer
November 23, 2004
NEW YORK (AP) -- Ricky Williams will serve a four-game suspension beginning next month and then be reinstated with the Miami Dolphins by the NFL, according to his lawyer.

But the league says an agreement has not been finalized.

``I am pleased with the National Football League's proposal,'' attorney David Cornwell said Tuesday. ``I think Ricky will be pleased, too.''

Williams must approve the deal, which would move him from the retired list to the suspended list for the final four games of the schedule. The running back is required to serve a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

After that, his contract with the Dolphins would be in force.

``Anything regarding Ricky's status is a league matter,'' Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said.

``No agreement has been reached at this time,'' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said, adding the league and Williams' representatives have been in discussions ``for some time.''

Williams, 27, retired during the summer, giving up the $5 million he would have earned this season, which would have been his sixth in the NFL, amid reports he faced the suspension for substance abuse. Williams is now about a month into a 17-month course at the California College of Ayurveda in Grass Valley, Calif., studying holistic medicine.

The Dolphins' season pretty much was ruined by Williams' sudden retirement. The star runner was the focal point of Miami's offense and the Dolphins, also ravaged by injuries, are 1-9 without him. They will have their first losing season since 1988 and Dave Wannstedt resigned as coach earlier this month.

The team filed a lawsuit last month in federal court against Williams after an arbitrator ruled he owes the team more than $8.6 million for breaching his contract.

Williams rushed for 3,225 yards in two seasons with the Dolphins, including a league-leading 1,853 yards in 2002. They acquired the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner in a trade with New Orleans after the 2001 season.

Throughout his career, Williams has been plagued by strange behavior, including conducting interviews with his helmet on when he was with the Saints. He suffers from social-anxiety disorder and was a spokesman for an anti-depressant. He said marijuana helped him once he had to stop using the anti-depressant because it didn't agree with his diet.

Williams found laughable reports he retired because he wanted to continue smoking marijuana.

I wonder what Jason Taylor thinks.

Doesn't matter he is out of there anyway. Look for the Raiders to trade their first pick in the draft to get him. The 'Phins won't hold onto him they will move him for a number one pick or a handful of picks in the later rounds.

Hate the fact he can weasel his way out of retirement after the cash is gone ondrugs already, basically after the season is over and he has already screwed over the Dolphins. Again I do it is not final yet but it looks obvious is will go through. A 4-game suspension really isnt that harsh. Bad Overall move

I have heard that he wants to play for the Raiders next season, but are you sure the Fish will move him for a 1st round pick?

I actually believe that they would give him up for a first rounder, cause at the rate they are going they will probably be getting a top five pick, if they could pick up another solid pick, that could help there team greatly, maybe even better than a trade would do them, I think it would be a smart move to pick up another 1st round pick

Why not? They will have a high enough pick that they should be able to get the pick of the litter at RB between Cedric Benson, Ronnie Brown, or Carnell Williams and if they can con what will likely be a top ten pick out of the Raiders then they can go after some help for that crappy O-line they have. I say dump Ricky and go for one of the young studs in the draft. Why hold on to a guy who may up and leave again on you anyway?

Ricky is not coming back becuase he is out of cash specifically. He is coming back because an arbitrator ruled he had to pay the 'Phins back all of that bonus money. So, to get out of re-paying the cash he is reporting back to the team.

Yeah, if I were Miami, I'd look for a QB, HB, and an offensive lineman. They've got a good receiving core and a Pro Bowl TE, with that great defense, as well as a consistent kicker. As soon as they correct those 3 stated above, they'll be contenders in the AFC East once again.

I wish A.J. Feeley would play well. *mad*

Thing is unless Rodgers or Leinart declare there does not appear to be any QBs earmarked for the Top 10 in this year's draft. Now if the 'Phins end up with the Raiders pick and Leinart or Rodgers come out they could hit the jackpot and get the franchise QB they desparately need and a stud to tote the ball for them.

trudat.

However, Jay Fiedler is good enough for now. I mean, he's not even half bad, and he isn't even the problem on why the offense is so bad.

Nope, no running game is the problem with the offense. With the flavor of the week at halfback teams just sit back in pass coverage all game and Fiedler is not a QB that wins games for you he just won't lose them when all things are equal. Feely just does not have enough experience for his talent level to win with this team. I think he could do okay if he had a running game to support him.

I'd like to know how he is going to get out of the third failed drug test, which by NFL rules is a automatic 1 year suspension.

Also, Williams wont help the dolphins too much, considering he wont be putting on the uniform, and all they are going to get for him is a mid level draft pick...

I have a feeling they'll be getting more than a mid-level draft pick. I would expect first or second rounder.

By the way, even better news for Dolphins fans, Jay Fielder was put on the IR.

That's only better news for me. A.J. Feeley is one of my favourite players, but he sucks this season. *gloomy*

I am really sick of people thinking that the Raiders are the NFL's asylum for head cases. The Raiders aren't more disfunctional than any other team in the NFL. I highly doubt the Al Davis will want a RB who is probably playing only to pay back 8.6 mil. A first round draft pick is out of the question.

Because he is able to put up 1,500 yards a year without really trying.

Overrated? I tend to think that anyone who puts up over 1800 yards in a season can't be called that.
