Let's imagine a 32-team playoff field, with conference champions automatically qualifying. Like basketball, 4 "regions". Here we go. The 32 teams I would put in the playoffs (first in conference champs order, then record order. This is not a seeding or ranked order, so I'm not saying North Texas is better than Texas.)
USC
Oklahoma
Auburn
Utah
Boise State
Louisville
Virginia Tech
Michigan
Toledo
Pittsburgh
North Texas
Texas
California
Iowa
Wisconsin
Navy
LSU
Georgia
Tennessee
Florida State
Miami
Virginia
Boston College
West Virginia
Memphis
Miami, OH
Northern Illinois
Bowling Green
Arizona State
UTEP
Fresno State
Ohio State

These are, in fact, the 32 teams that had 8 or more wins this season, with the exception of North Texas, who had 7 but won the Sun Belt, and Ohio State, who got in there with their win over Michigan. How do you seed them?

Here's how I do it:
1) USC, OKlahoma, Auburn, Virginia Tech
2) Utah, Boise State, California, Texas
3) Louisville, Navy, Michigan, Georgia
4) Miami, LSU, Tennessee, Iowa
5) Pittsburgh, Boston College, Florida State, Wisconsin
6) Memphis, West Virginia, Virginia, Toledo
7) Ohio State, Arizona State, Bowling Green, North Texas
8) Fresno State, UTEP, Miami Ohio, Northern Illinois

Your thoughts?

I'm not gonna post how I'd do it, I mostly agree with your seedings and selections. I really, really wish college football did this.

32 teams is a lot, if they were to do a playoff, their would either be 4 or 8 teams. But if they did the 32 team format they'd probably end up having automatic bids i.e. the winners of the Big 12, Pac-10, ACC, SEC would all get #1 seeds. Basically have it like the Bowl system today except just make a playoff tree out of it. And just like bowls, the bowl committee can take an at-large team instead of the team that was suppose to be in that bowl. It would be long and complicated, but it would work.
