Pavano to N.Y.; Burnett next?
The Marlins and Yankees are in discussions for a Burnett-Vazquez deal.
Sunday, December 12, 2004
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Carl Pavano is heading to New York next year, and he might be taking one of his Marlins teammates with him.
The New York Yankees, who are finalizing a four-year contract that will pay the 28-year-old Pavano about $39 million, spent parts of Friday and Saturday talking to the Marlins about a trade that would add A.J. Burnett to New York's rotation.
The Marlins would get right-hander Javier Vazquez, according to two major-league sources with knowledge of the talks.
"That would be pretty cool," Burnett said before cracking a joke about Yankees owner George Steinbrenner's clean dress codes. "I don't know if I could shave my goatee."
After being informed that Pavano wanted to go to New York, the Yankees asked the Marlins if they would be interested in Vazquez. The Yankees indicated they would be interested in Burnett, who is Pavano's best friend. The Marlins were intrigued, knowing they could potentially save money because Burnett will become a free agent in 2006.
A source close to Pavano, who won 18 games for the Marlins last year, said the right-hander would lobby Yankees officials to pursue Burnett.
The Marlins want the Yankees to pick up at least $10.5 million of the $34.5 million remaining on the four-year, $45 million contract that Vazquez signed last off-season. The Marlins had offered Pavano a three-year, $21 million deal and would use that money for Vazquez.
The Marlins also want the Yankees to throw in one or two other players. Two possibilities are left-handed starter Brad Halsey and right-handed reliever Felix Rodriguez.
Coupled with the departure of Pavano, such a trade would drastically change the Marlins' rotation next year. The Marlins signed left-hander Al Leiter last week to add a veteran presence for Burnett, right-hander Josh Beckett and left-hander Dontrelle Willis. The Marlins also are interested in left-hander Odalis Perez.
Vazquez, 28, went 14-10 with a 4.91 ERA in 2004 after spending six seasons in Montreal. He is 78-78 with a 4.26 ERA in his career.
Pavano's choice of the Yankees ends a courtship that began in West Palm Beach in early November, when he had dinner with Yankees manager Joe Torre at E.R. Bradley's Saloon.
Even after Pavano told his agent, Scott Shapiro, on Saturday morning to focus on the Yankees, Detroit and Baltimore reached out.
But Pavano, who did not return a phone call, apparently has made up his mind.
"Number one, he wants to win," Shapiro said. "Carl's going to be the king of New York."
Shapiro said both sides were working out details and that the deal likely would be announced early next week.
Marlins General Manager Larry Beinfest said late Saturday he hadn't been informed of Pavano's decision.
"We were hoping to have Carl in the rotation with Al Leiter," he said. "If that's not the case, we'll pursue other options."
Pavano decided Friday morning that he was leaning toward the Seattle Mariners before the Yankees got involved again. Burnett has been in touch with him on a daily basis and thought he was headed to Boston.
"The Red Sox are an incredible organization," Shapiro said. "It's been a real difficult decision for him."
If this is true, the Yankees are doing a good job getting some young talent in their staff. They could really use A.J. too, but like it says in the thread title, this is only a rumour. Stay tuned.
