PONCE, Puerto Rico -- Javier Vazquez says the New York Yankees would be making a mistake if they trade him.

A proposed three-team deal that would have sent the right-hander to Los Angeles, Randy Johnson from Arizona to the Yankees and Shawn Green from the Dodgers to the Diamondbacks collapsed earlier this week when Los Angeles changed its mind.

"I'm disappointed that the Yankees are talking about trading me for having only a bad second half to the season," Vazquez was quoted as saying in Friday's editions of La Perla del Sur.

"I've had four consistent seasons in the major leagues, and for one bad second half it's unfair that they want to trade me," Vazquez said. "I still trust in my abilities, and if the Yankees trade me, they will regret it."

Vazquez, 28, said his preference was to stay with the Yankees. If New York does deal him, he would like to return to the National League.

New York acquired him from Montreal after the 2003 season in a deal that sent Nick Johnson and Juan Rivera to the Expos. Vazquez then signed a $45 million, four-year contract.

"After all this rumors one feels not wanted," said Vazquez, who went 14-9 with a 4.75 ERA. While he made the All-Star team for the first time, he won just one of his last nine regular-season starts.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the Yankees were not trying to trade Vazquez, that they only would consider dealing him to acquire Johnson, a five-time Cy Young Award winner.

Vazquez said he will seek a no-trade clause before signing his next contract.

I'll bet Vazquez will be out to prove something in '05 whether he's traded or still a Yankee. If he is then he could put together one of his best years ever I think. He's got some good years under his belt and should be entering in prime.

What's he supposed to say, "I suck"?

I like Vazquez. I think he is a good pitcher. He should stay, Johnson only gives the Yanks a couple of years.

Johnson gives the Yanks 2 years at the most. Vazquez has a lot more options for the Yankees then does RJ.

Trading Vazquez only says one thing: The yankees are only caring about now, not later. Sooner or later, good players are not going to want to come to the MFY, and they will revert back to their late '80s form. King George just can't stand it that his team choked against the Red Sox, and he is out to spend money like he's Bill Gates. Pretty soon, he's gonna run out of money

he is out to spend money

But that's Georgey Porgey's style. If he wasn't like that, he wouldn't be George. :)

However, in all honesty, Vazquez is only 28, and they are going to trade someone who made his first All-Star game this past season for a 41 year old pitcher who maybe has one to two good seasons left in him.

Please George, let's be sensible here.

He could just not say anything at all. If you look at it, he did have a great first half of the year. He did great. That's why out of all the pitchers on that staff, he made the All-Star game. Yankees are crap and should get shot. Go Twins.

Man, the thing is, for the 2 years the Yankees could have Randy Johnson, they could win 2 World Series. Last year, look what he was able to do, he got a no hitter, now for a 41 year old, that pretty damn good. Now as for Vasquez, what good is telling the press, if he wants to complain, complain to Steinbrennar, or the GM, not to some stupid Puerto Rican newspaper. If he as good as he thinks, why hasnt he done awhole lot of good for the Yankees. George just doesnt have patience to see potencial in players. I personally could care less what happens, I hate the Yankees, but I would like to see Johnson find a good home, just not the DBacks, or Yankees.
