The Chicago Cubs today agreed to terms with outfielder Todd Hollandsworth on a one-year contract for the 2005 campaign. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed. He was eligible for salary arbitration.

Hollandsworth, 31, batted .318 with 6 doubles, 2 triples, 8 homers and 22 RBI in 57 games last season. He appeared in 32 games (26 starts) in right field, 4 games (3 starts) in left field and 3 games (3 starts) at first base. Hollandsworth left the game June 27 with a right shin contusion after fouling a ball off his shin and did not return to action for the remainder of the season. During the month of June, he went 25-for-76 (.329) with 3 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers and 11 RBI.

Prior to going on the DL, he was the team's most effective pinch hitter. Batted .563 in that role, going 9-for-16 with 2 doubles, 2 homers and 4 RBI. He is a career .304 pinch hitter, going 42-for-138 with 6 roundtrippers and 21 RBI.

Todd signed with the Cubs as a free agent after playing for the World Series-champion Florida Marlins in 2003. The former National League Rookie of the Year has seen major league action since 1995 with Los Angeles (1995-2000), Colorado (2000-2002), Texas (2002) and Florida (2003).

This was a crucial move for Hendry to make. Hollandsworth is the heart and soul of pinch hitting on this team.
