I read on the local Fox Sports Network that the NYM are meeting with pitcher Odalis Perez.
A rotation of Martinez-Perez-Benson would be very intresting. The Mets might be a contender for the NL East this year. The Braves are not looking as strong.
He won't sign with the Mets.

With or without Perez the Mets have a good pitching staff on paper.

The Mets always have a good team, on paper. Then the season starts and everybody gets injured and they wind up losing big.

Or the Mets sign declining veterans for way too much money that end up sucking and suffering career-ending injuries. Plus, they take away playing time from the younger players. ;)
At least, that's the Steve Phillips way, right Sandman? *banana*

The 2002 Mets signed Mo Vaughn coming off a 30+HR, 100+RBI season. He was injured for a while and hasn't even had a starting job since. Robbie Alomar began his downhill slide after becoming a superstar in Cleveland. Jeromy Burnitz was picked up and was awful. Roger Cedeno was lousy too coming off a strong season with the Tigers.
The 2003 Mets had an injured Mike Piazza for most of the year, a declining Robbie Alomar, and injured Jose Reyes, an injured Cliff Floyd and a lousy Roger Cedeno.
The 2004 Mets had a very disappointing Mike Piazza, an also disappointing Kaz Matsui, an injured Cliff Floyd (again), Mike Cameron hit .231 and Richard Hidalgo hit .228.
Their pitching was always solid in those 3 season. Their signings just didn't work out like they were expected. If the Mets make anymore offensive signings then watch out for another career to end.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was saying. Steve Phillips had the Brian Sabean syndrome, an obsession with declining veterans.

Robbie Alomar was at the top of his game when the Mets signed him though, and he wasn't old yet. And Mo Vaughn would have been if not for 1 or 2 injury shortened seasons. Burnitz and Floyd were also very good until they joined the Mets. Big hitters just seem to die when the Mets sign them.

Yeah, and by now, it's well-known that if the New York Mets sign a good player, his numbers will decline. At least, that's how it usually works.
