All indications point to Lenny Wilkens resigning as coach of the New York Knicks on Saturday, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith reported Friday night.
The Knicks expect that he will tender his resignation Saturday morning, Smith reported.
The Knicks have been slumping, but Smith reported that family issues are a factor in Wilkens' decision.
"I'm going to do my job, and whatever happens happens," Wilkens said on Tuesday. "I know who I am, and I have confidence in my abilities and don't worry about other things, things I can't control."
Wilkens' comments were oddly similar to ones he made at the end of the 2002-03 season in his final days as head coach of the Raptors. The Knicks lost 98-81 at Toronto on Wednesday, and again on Friday at home to the Houston Rockets, 92-91.
The Knicks' solo hold on first place in the weak Atlantic Division, which may have given them a false sense of accomplishment over the past month and a half, exists no more. At 17-22, they are 1½ games behind Philadelphia
