Kurt Schottenheimer, fired as secondary coach by the Green Bay Packers last week, took the same position with the St. Louis Rams on Monday. Schottenheimer replaces Perry Fewell, who left the Rams to take a similar position with the Chicago Bears.

Schottenheimer will enter his 19th NFL season in 2005 after serving as the defensive backs coach for Green Bay last season. The Packers finished 25th in the league in passing defense last year and had just eight interceptions, second fewest in the NFL next to the Rams' six. S Darren Sharper led the team with four interceptions (tied for 10th in the NFC), returning two of them for touchdowns.

Prior to his season in Green Bay, Schottenheimer was the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions (2002-03), Washington Redskins (2001), and Kansas City Chiefs (1999-2000).

"We welcome his expertise, knowledge and history of success to our defensive staff," Rams head coach Mike Martz said. "He has an impressive history of helping players reach their highest level. His experience as a coordinator several times in the NFL allows us an added perspective."

In 1999 with Kansas City, Schottenheimer's unit produced a franchise-record nine defensive touchdowns to lead the NFL, also leading the league in turnover ratio (plus 21) and finished second in takeaways (45), fumble recoveries (20), and points off turnovers (125). Prior to becoming the Chiefs' defensive coordinator, Schottenheimer was their defensive backs coach (1995-98) and special teams coach (1989-94), also serving as the special teams coach for the Cleveland Browns from 1987-88 in his first NFL position.

Before coming to the NFL in 1987, Schottenheimer was the linebackers coach at both Notre Dame (1986) and LSU (1984-85), also coaching defensive backs as Tulane (1983) and linebackers and defensive backs at Michigan State (1978-82). The University of Miami (FL) product got his coaching start the as defensive coordinator at William Patterson (NJ) College in 1974.

Good for the Rams, maybe we can replace Mike Martz. Dick Vermeil, maybe. Tears and a losing coaching record, but heck we won the Superbowl.
