Lest I become known for posting boring news (see my languishing thread (http://forums.e-mpire.com/showthread.php?t=29009) about Keita Takahashi's address at the GDC...), I was directed to the following transcription of a Greg Costikyan rant session (also at the GDC) which seems to correspond with the un/spoken thoughts of many game developers in recent months. To wit, the collective gaming industry is becoming more and more bloated with development costs to try to guarantee a hot-selling title that it will soon collapse under its own weight. That's a "business" problem. There's also a "content" problem: the creative risks that can be taken by a development house are becoming less and less viable because nobody can be sure that something new will be an "A-list" title financially.

Normally I don't give much credence to doomsayers or post-modernists of any sort (because I like to vex them with optimism!), but it's definitely something to think about.

Behold, unbelievers! The end is nigh... again. (http://www.costik.com/weblog/2005_03_01_blogchive.html#111069190589189590)

I'm an optimist by nature but I have been touting this Doomsday stance for the past 2 years. We will experience another 'crash' of sorts but I'm optimistic of this crash actually for I believe it will bring about a 'Revolution' in gaming.
