The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has reported that Nintendo recently filed a proposal reserving its rights to expand its headquarters along the north side of Nintendo's existing property and submitted a complaint against Microsoft's announced plans to erect new buildings along its campus.
This land battle is due to the proposals by both companies, combined, exceed the limit of new commercial development in the area, leaving no room for other companies to expand.
Nintendo’s proposal aims to more than double its space in Redmond. Interestingly though, Nintendo said it has no plans to develop the land in the near future.
"It's really more about protecting our ability to develop that land in the future," said Beth Llewelyn, a Nintendo of America spokeswoman.
Microsoft has already proposed a new plan that scales back its expansion plans for now. The new proposal takes 251,000 square feet out of its initial proposal and leaves 100,000 square feet to accommodate Nintendo and others in the area. That being said, the software giant’s proposal to the city gives Microsoft top priority to pursue development for the conceded portion should other development be less than expected, or if the development cap on the neighborhood increases.
