What are your thoughts on the casualfication of hand held gaming with the PSP? What do you think the repercussions will be towards Nintendo? What do you think Nintendo will do to keep its death grip on handheld gaming (outside DS)?

One of the main things I'm worried about isn't what will happen to Nintendo... but what will happen to classic 2d gaming! Handhelds are the last stand for 2d games and now it looks like they're about to be pushed off that too.

I always viewed the handheld part of the industry filled with "casuals" just look at the games you can get for the GBA that says it all.

I think the PSP will sell well, and the DS had better make use of its innovative features or its gonna be SOL.

What i hate the most is how so many groups are tring to make games seem "cool." Games aren't cool, dammit! If games were "cool," they'd also be "stupid." Like GTA. Sure, it's fun, but it's not like i's the best game ever created. in fact, on my list, it'd be near the bottom.

Yea, but just wait till the next few months you will see how bad it will get!

Some of my favorite/most interested in DS games:

Band Brothers
WarioWare Touched
Yoshi's Touch and Go
Kirby and the Magic Paintbrush
New Super Mario Bros*
Advance Wars DS
Bomberman DS
Harvest Moon DS*
Legend of Zelda: 4 Swords DS*
Polarium*

All of which are (*basically/probably) 2D. Don't worry.

What I see happeneing is far dire than just Nintendo taking a hit or even 2D gaming dropping further off the radar.

Handheld gaming has always been a place for small development houses to make their goods because it's cheap. The PSP development is near that to the PS2 and these small dev houses will begin to fade out, just like the small home console dev houses.

The EA'ing of the handheld industry has now begun.

That's true...And that article i read before on EA wasn't, it doesn't sound fun.

monopolizing isn't cool...

I want an editorial by you about that on my desk this week.

Need any help, I'm writing a paper in the nieghorhood of what your thinking...and no, it's not all fanboyish, it's a very neutral view, ie facts first, personal view second.

Hate to say it, but, the PSP is going to sell very well. I was in my EB last night, and they got at least 20 calls from people wondering what time the store was going to open for the PSP launch. They refused to open at midnight, and everyone had to wait until 9:00 this morning. Boo freakin' hoo. One person almost cancelled their preorder because they wouldn't open at midnight. The guy talked him out of that though.

When Nintendo owned the handheld industry, they could control it how they wanted, and kept it out of the corruption that has plagued the consoles. With Sony now successfully in the market, if they keep the industry where it should be, they'll be crushed by Sony. Valkyrie was right. Dictatorship can be very effective in the hands of the right dictator. Nintendo.

But that's all no more. Rest in peace, handheld industry.

I'm worried about the fate of 2D games. I hope that the power of these new handhelds doesn't kill 2D gaming. I don't want to see gaming become purely 3D. That would be a sad day indeed.

Really though, can't forget our roots.

I don't think 2-D gaming will ever disappear, but it has been marginalized because of the rapid development of the handheld industry. It has been evolving much faster than anyone could have anticipated and that is certainly a factor. 3-D gaming is still an unknown variable, but you can bet that Sony and Nintendo will be trying to perfect that. The early DS and PSP games show that there are still some bugs in the system.

If for some reason thats unexpected, ( in the worst case scenario, although I am confident always in Nintendo) and Nintendo loses the handheld market to SOny although I doubt it...it will be the first step in a 3 step program I never would have believed could happen in all my wildest dreams.
1. Nintendo loses Handheld market
2. Nintendo loses counsole market ( I dont want people saying they lost it now, the GC was fine IMO and is not a lost cause as much would abandon it)
3. Nintendo retires in videogames

If these three steps should ever come true it will be the end of everything I believed in...from my days with Gameboy, to my NES, to all the future Nintendo products I would buy from that point on. I am certain Number 1 is still safe and sound but if it happens....it will mean the worst thing imaginable is beginning to happen, it may not go so far as Steps 2 or 3 but if it ever should then Handheld market lost could be an indicator. Someone wake me up from ths nightmare that is Sony, PSP and this CGE (Casual Gaming Era). I want to see the old days again...

There's far too many core gamers in the handheld industry, unlike the console. Even all the hardcore casuals I know are playing games like Fire Emblem and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.
No, my friends, handheld gaming will not suffer as much.

I think in the end the systems will both sell about the same units (worldwide) I think the PSP is good for the handheld industry. Nintendo could use some competition.

That's what they said about the Playstation.

At least, that's what they probobly said. Not like I would know.

Nah I think it was something like we will now use our cooperate powers and create a trend so powerful it will destory games for all those who truly enjoy them, it will be called the Casual Gaming Era and all but the most powerful fans will be under its cooperate powers. Something like that or just pointing out mass world domination and a merge with EA in 2010, ha its the end of days!!!

Like many, I'm worried about the future of 2D games. I hope they never stop making 2D megaman and fighting games. For some reason I've always picked older style fighting games over the 3D ones.

Never did like that Tekken game.....

Let's just hope they don't start releasing 3D Street Fighter games. Those suck.

I'm really concerned about the future of 2D gaming. Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 proved that 2D gaming can still work, even on these high powered 3D consoles. They are great games that used unique styling and everyone that played them liked them. Hopefully when Viewtiful Joe DS comes out, and people realize that it is a really good game, it will inspire developers to create more 2D games.
