Yeah I'm branching out of Windows and Mac OS. Right now I have Puppy Linux installed on a new FAT 32 partition I made for such things.

I'm looking for something a bit more popular with IM services though. It works great for Internet and learning some of the basic OS structure though. Any opinions on what version of Linux I should buy or download?

Try Red Hat, Fedora or FreeBSD

I'm a fan of Suse and Red Hat as far as Linux goes.

Slackware is great once you have all the basics down.

Slackware, Debian, or Red Hat. PhatLinux I used a bit don't know if it is still around though.

Red Hat has some nice application support across the board. It's tad bit expensive though.

Slackware is awesome. One of the best ones out there and will help you really learn Linux.
