For the last month or so my computer has been under attack. This (1) attack is in the form of pup-ups. I know that everyone gets at least one pop-up per day. But not me. For some reason I get them every 20 seconds. And I mean that literally. I don't mean I get a lot of pop-ups. I mean one every 20 seconds. Every 30 or so pop-ups I get this (2) warning about how I haven't completed a scan. I have no idea what the prog(3)am (4) it is talking about, all I know is that it isn't there. I have run Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spy-(5)(6)Bot Search and Destroy 8 times each so far and 3 times each in safe-mode. I have run (7) Norton 2003 Pro (8) 4 times and once in safe-mode. I have run HiJackThis 3 times, each time deleting programs. I(9) have dled (scan) (10) about 12 different types of pop-up blockers.(11)I use FIREFOX which has it's own pop-up blocker and it also(12)doesn't work. All of my(13) known methods have failed me. Please please please, for the love of cake, HELP ME!!! ( by the way all t\of the numbers inside the (14) were pop-ups I got while typing this.(15)(16) The scan states "NOTICE: You have not completed a scan, so the condition of your registry remains unknown. If your computer has errors in the registry database, it could cause unpredictable and erratic behavior, freezes, or crashes. Would you like to download Registry Cleaner to scan for and correct the problem (17) now?")DAMN Y(18)OU POP-UPS!!!!(19)(scan)(20)

You pretty much said everything I was going to. I guess just format and start over....
Unless of course Nuke knows the answer.

Nuke, sadly, does not know the answer. He took a look at it and just kinda shruged. He started laughing and told me to reformat. He is ticked at me because I won't ask ITT if I can buy Windows XP from them for $15 because he did from his college. I really hope that I don't have to reformat again. I have a 220gig hard drive and only about 60 gig left. It will take me months to try and reinstall all of those programs. But I guess that is what I get for having so much on my computer.

Backing up stuff is easy. If you have a CD burner. Just copy all your installers of programs you really want to the CD, and backup your bookmarks etc to floppy.

Any computers on a network or spare HDDs, those make great back ups.

You, dopey.
Your C: drive is primary, so you only need to format that one in the case of formating. You would only need to push all of your garbage onto your 180 GB drive and format the 80 that contains the windows XP partition. Your 180 would remain intact while your OS is reinstalled.
For the love of god, ask them if they have windows XP available at ITT! Go t.o the software desk and ask the software hippie if he knows of any such software dicount programs the school has. Can it really hurt having an offical copy of windows XP lying about? I think not
But before we consider formatting....
I will have to look again when I stop over. You are sure messenger service is disabled by default in admin tools/ services in control pannel? Are you getting pop-up when not browsing the web or only when using your browser? You also might want to check your starup list in "run" and type "Msconfig". See what starts up with your system. You might also want to try installing a firewall like "Sy-gate", and try Java Cool's Spyblaster in additon. The firewall may block outgoing commands and then, based on the block information, you would be able to locate the culprit.

Yeah stop on over this weekend. At least then you can help me tie it to the tree out back and shoot it.
I plan on askin the hippie tomorow. With any luck he will give me a copy for less then $15.
The pop-ups run show up whenever they please. If it was only when I was browsing I wouldn't care. But this is whenever. Along with the fact that visual studios complains that it must debug every folder I open I think reformatting will be the least painless thing I can do.

Ok I talked wit da hippie and he said "Na man, can't. Damn school behind with that shit. Just got 03 server in which dona help much since the puters run on 2000. The teaches don't even got Home. They gota sign them out. It's fucking bullshit man." He then started to ramble on about midget porn and then kinda blanked out. He did say if I wanted a pirated version of home or pro he can get me one but not the crack.
My messanger isn't running either. I turned that off when this started to happen and it didn't help. Right now I kinda have it to a dull roar because im running three pop-up blockers but they don't get them all.

Shit. Sucks with the pop-up situation. I don't know how to help you on this one, except to just bite the bullet and reformat.
