What are some of the novels that have made you fall asleep reading them? I've had to read some very bland stuff this year, including a handfull of 'teen angst' junk. The worst was Peeling the Onion. I thought The Great Gatsby was bad, but now the stuff I have to read for English makes me beg to read about the likes of Nick Carraway and that other chick.

Name some bad books!

Last of the Mohicans is very boring. As much as I love Tolkien stories, I love watching all the different versions of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, I can't read his work because it puts me to sleep. It's a sad thing to admit but it's true. Also I admire Hemingway, he's a brilliant writer, but all his work is extremely boring as well.

I could name many others, as I was an English major. It was four long years of many novels that would put me to sleep. But nonetheless, I'm glad I can still discuss them if need be.

Most of the crap I've read to read in my Contemp Lit class has put me to sleep.

Surfacing, Margaret Atwood
Sula, Toni Morrison

Those two are the big ones.

Yeah I totaly understand. Tolkien just has that dry writing style that's hard to get through especially for someone like me who reads comic books for fun. I had to read a piece from hemmingway once and I'm glad to say I didn't have to read any more. Once I felt like getting my latin teacher mad and I called tolkien a poser. He asked me how, but of course I didn't have an answer. Both authors are great, but they're just not for me.

Are you on drugs? How is Tolkeins writing style dry? His works are very intense and action packed,as well as romantic. And Hemingway? He has the most beautiful writing style Ive ever read.. he can write about the most mundane things and make them sound interesting.. I swear he could have written a short story about a man doing his taxes and it would keep me interested, just by the amazing word selection he uses.

In all seriousness, Gamrchick, if tolkein and hemingway make you sleepy then maybe you should stop reading in bed late at night.. or just quit reading, because those 2 authors have just about the most lively, exciting writing styles of any English authors ever...

I will say that Tolkien is a fine writer, but there are times when he needs to shut up and let the story take control. I have nothing against Hemingway.

This isn't a bad book, but reading it does have a sleepy effect on me. Insomnia, by Stephen King, can get you down. It makes me feel tired when I read it, but it is a cool book.

I never said that they are horrible writers. Quite on the contrary, they are true masters of their craft. They both know how to brilliantly write great descriptions. But that's the problem, at least for me. There isn't a good balance between the narrative- you know the descriptions and the action. At least in Tolkien for me there isn't a good balance. Hemingway is just plain boring to me, but that maybe perhaps because I don't like what he particularly wirtes about. He does tend to write for a male audience. And his work also tends to be a bit on the sexist side. Although I did enjoy, In our Times. But his short stories are better than his novels in my opinion.

Short stories are the shiznit. They're not too long and some of my fav. authors are short story writers like HP Lovecraft. Some of his stuff is just so fun to read.

Arthur Conan Doyle and Stephen King are two other fine short story writers.

Ray Bradbury is my favorite short story author.

I agree- ACD, King and Bradbury are wonderful short story writers. Though their longer works are great too.

Cycle of the Werewolf is one of my favorite King stories ever. It's a little freaky. The movie, The Silver Bullet, wasn't nearly as great though.

Didn't Silver Bullet have Gary Busey in it? That dude is crazy. I forgot about Bradbury. I got to read some of his stuff in the 8th grade. Didn't he write fahrenheit 451?

I dont believe you at all, I think you are mentioning that work for ironic purposes. lol, "Insomnia" makes you sleepy?

Gamr chic: read "Farewell to arms".. a tremendous love story, albeit not particularly happy.

I could not find any interest or point in To Kill a Mockingbird, even though it's supposed to be this great work of literature. Then again, I read it when I was a freshman. Maybe I should take another look at it.

I watched the movie version of Mockingbird. All I remember is an old dude spitting on the nerd who wore glasses. And there was some sort of fight going on with kids in costumes.

To kill a mockingbird is just like every other book about African Americans in the south after or before the Civil War, except that the main characters are white. I felt it was such a waste of time too, all these stories are all the same every time, yes we know, there was oppression, yes we know it sucked, yes we know it was bad, we know. All of these books are all exactly the same, they are sooo boring. The learning tree is another one that i hated. That along with Shane, oh how i wasted my highschool reading boring works.
