Nintendo a Niche Player?
Yes, according to Microsoft's Bill Gates. Full story.
by Matt Casamassina
May 6, 2005 - Microsoft's new Xbox 360 console is still several months off from its rumored November debut, but the next-generation of trash talking has already begun.

A new article published by Business Week Online suggests that Microsoft head Bill Gates is more worried about Sony's next-generation console than he is Nintendo's. In the article, Gates seems to dismiss Nintendo's forthcoming Revolution console.
"Now people are looking really at TWO companies," Gates says on the subject of the next-generation consoles.. "I'd say that everyone's watching what Sony will come out with for this next generation, and what will we come out with, and who can be the leader this time around. Both companies will be very big on it. Nintendo is more likely to be a NICHE PLAYER this time around."

In a follow-up article, Sony takes a stab at Microsoft's new Xbox 360 console, painting the picture that it could be a mere marginal update to the current console.

"We look at delivering a quantum leap in technology, not just Xbox version 1.5," Sony spokeswoman Molly Smith is quoted as saying.

Ouch.

Expect more big words from the big three as the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005 approaches.

Oh snap! Personally I do think 360 is 1.5 and PS3 is 3.0 and Revolution just being an Apple but not in the ways I hate a Mac.

Wow. What a bunch of dumbasses. Seriously. The consoles havent even been revealed yet and already the companies are fighting like children over a sucker.

LOL, them be fightin' words!

Anyways, none of them should be underestimating their competitors. If they do, then it will most likely cost them.

What does niche player mean?

Vishus
05-08-2005, 07:45 PM
Basically its saying that Nintendo will be successful but with a small certain audience suited for Nintendo. From then on if Nintendo just concentrates on that audience it can get everybody else. Its just that Nintendo is trying to get everybody at once.

Jesus Christ, you'd think someone would need to have some common sense to become the richest man in the world. I don't suppose it's at all possible that no one's talking about the Revolution because, let's see, NO ONE KNOWS FUCKING ANYTHING ABOUT IT, do you? Nah.

"We look at delivering a quantum leap in technology, not just Xbox version 1.5." For once I agree with Sony. Except Sony is talking about a 'quantum leap' in graphical and processing power. The real quantum leap in technology is going to come from Nintendo. I mean, face it. Power and graphics are not going to win this generation. The generation after this (Xbox 3, PS4, and Nintendo-something) is going to be basically as good as graphics get. Period. And this coming generation is going to be damn close. Which is why if Nintendo can work up a bit more 3rd party relations, I truly think that within a decade, Nintendo could be back where they were in the mid-'80s.

Xbox - 20 million sold
GC - 19 million sold

Niche? And that 1 million difference is supposed seperate them? Is there an industry wide cut off point hat no one told me about? So they think that targeting the Xbox towards the Mountain Dew slamming, X-Games watching, Tony Hawk wannabe, Generation X, "I play only games that make me look cool" market isn't a niche market?

Nice job, Vipster.

Anyways, I'd be quite happy if they shot for a niche thing. To this day I consider the Dreamcast to be the only system that has achieved close to perfection, and they had some seriously niched up stuff.

Wow. Nintendo is trying their hardest to keep as much information as possible away from Microsoft (and Microsoft is doing the same with Sony) and they're both starting to make some pretty big claims about other companies' consoles. Unbelievable. The fact that Microsoft thinks that Nintendo would make the same advertisent/purple mistakes again is completely apalling (sp?), and I just don't even care about a single word that comes out of the mouth of a Sony executive. God forbid Microsoft worries about something other than system specs!

Well said Viper... ...Microsort and Sony are trying to battle it out with words and graphics.... ....Nintendo is trying to innovate....which is why I think Nintendo deserves more respect and will come out more successfull this coming gen.

Nintendo? Niche player? This time around?

This is how you can tell Microsoft is new to the console space. By definition, Nintendo HAS BEEN a niche player, with their niche that became became very apparent during the time of the Nintendo 64 and now the GameCube.

niche n.

A special area of demand for a product or service.

Sounds just like Nintendo, doesn't it? Nintendo provides for Nintendo gamers. That's their market - that's their niche - the same niche they've had since people decided that Mario was fun and the other games they were used to were not. The only difference, of course, is that this niche has gotten smaller generation after generation.

I'm looking at everything Bill Gates said, and it is all true. Word for word.

Now people are looking really at two companiesLet's see: declining third-party support for Nintendo, a failure at attracting a new audience [Read: thus far], a kiddy image. He is absolutely right in saying that people [in general] are only looking at Microsoft and Sony. All you have to do is think of an article that had the following words - next-generation, PlayStation, and Xbox. Nothing about Nintendo or Revolution. C'mon, I'm sure it can't be too hard. I've seen dozens of them.

I'd say that everyone's watching what Sony will come out with for this next generation, and what will we come out with, and who can be the leader this time around. Both companies will be very big on it.Completely true. I see this as no different from all the articles I read that only speak of PlayStation and Xbox.

Bill Gates is not going to convince me to buy an Xbox 360. Ken Kutaragi is not going to convince me to buy a PlayStation 3. I couldn't care less.

I'm part of Nintendo's niche and I'd never leave it.

He said the Revolution would be relegated to a niche market next gen, not this gen. Things will be different next gen, the Xbox for microsoft was just a beach front, they had little development support (basically all the early games were internal from MS) you could'nt go a day on the net in 2002 without reading atricles about how MS xbox was doomed.

Now the tables have turned MS will launch first and has alot of momentum. And I for one am not a "Mountain Dew slamming, X-Games watching, Tony Hawk wannabe, Generation X, "I play only games that make me look cool" person go figure

^online will definatly help, but alot of people will think its not 'cool' to have a 'kiddy nintendo' console, or wont want to play SSBR or watever because they dont give nintendo a chance. i got a sony fanboy to play SSBM and he loved it. (he just wouldnt admit that he loved it (he thought it was 'ok'))

Look at the sales, the difference is so small that stating that about Nintendo is stupid. MS attacked Sony as soon as the Xbox was released when they could have focused on Nintendo. It was a stupid move and MS could have sold more Xbox if they changed thier tactics. Gates is not changing his ways and still underminds Nintendo which will come back at Nintendo. Also you still may have Forza but maybe on a another console.

No what he said was... well let me translate it:
" I am Bill Gates and Nintendo is mad cause we stole their cordless controllers, that is our innovation, because of this it makes us 1337 for next Gen lol101!!!!"

Now Nintendos reponse will be a sound and peacful one whcih impplies nothing but the best wished to the competetion from our very own Reggie:
" Dear Mr. Gates, go Fu*k yourself...and Microsoft. As for stealing our controller your ass is mine come E3 2005, thats my revolution you pencil neck geek."

Its clear this is the beginning of a fruitful relationship...I think? :nervous:

Eh, this is the type of thing that is bound to happen between the big three (or two according to most people). There's no point in taking any time to consider what any of them say about one another because it's simply slander and self-promotion. So long as Nintendo delivers with Revolution (which of course it will) I will buy it and be happy regardless of how Nintendo is doing compared to Sony or Microsoft (I will of course keep close tabs on such data).

have to agree...thw dreamcast althogh niche made its mark with games which to this day still sell for the price of new games... (shenmue)...if nintendo have this and also there next gen bladybla to kick ass , its all tghe good, they have the strongest foundation to build a popular console on, with the most dedicated damned fan base. most recognisable and popular spokesmen in real and virual world. We will be a niche thingy, but at the same timke be the best damned console of the future generation.

Pencil neck geek... I enjoy. Yeah this all makes me laugh and sigh. It just reminds me of politics waaaaaaaay too much, and I hate politics. Lets just all agree every company has it's fair share of great things and will keep trying to beat out the competion. (But we all know that Nintendo will make a big come back and hopefully soon.)
