im sure all the 3 major competitors have been planning their future consoles since the day their current ones were released. i mean...what else is their R&D depts gonna do?
and besides if they don't plan for the future they'll b left behind by those who do. simple as that.

yeh they are but they usually just slug it out and hope their next console saves them....take sega for example
the saturn was pretty much a flop for them so they focused all their effort on the dreamcast.
the rest is history...

It's normal for a company to start on the next system after they just finshed one. Nintendo, Sega(or did), Sony doesn't it why can't Microsoft too?

Hey, I'm an American and youre gonna have a hard time convincing me I should love the Xbox "just because." Microsoft is a multinational, multiconglomerated eyesore that couldn't care less about where they sell their product. They represent nothing but their own lust for profit, which doesn't make them any different from any other corporation but also doesn't make them special to me "just because" Microsoft is an ostensibly American company.
What I don't particularly like about Microsoft's approach to the gaming console is that they didn't really come up with anything new or original except some anti-pirating schemes that apparently aren't working the way they'd hoped. Where Nintendo, Sega, and even Sony have always innovated and created their consoles somewhat from scratch, Microsoft just leeched from existing PC hardware bins and dumbed-down their own OS and called it a console.
Besides, theyre made in Mexico, not the USA.

I don't. Then there would be no competition, which would mean very little great games, IMO.

good point
but its still not a good idea to have only 1 organisation making consoles. why? simple. monopolisation will drive console prices up as there is no competition to keep prices down

yes thats true... but um... like... yes even if games were competeing in prises thay would be competeing at redicusesly high prises... like 150$(75$ us dollers)

Yes xbox 2 was announced a few months back. But remember PS3 was also anounced a few months after the ps2 release. So whos to say microsoft cant?

Hmm. Well, the Xbox2 should be taking a while to make anyway, so they have announced it early. I wouldn't expect it before several years pass (same with the PS3).

Just face it... Xbox is sucking one now, so it's obvious their answer is "Make a more powerful console... still!"
It's not working... powerful = crap without games... hell, the CD-I, 3DO and Jaguar were all the most powerful at one point, but where are they now? Is there a Mega 3DO? Is there a CD-I3? Nope... they called it quits because they failed... Micro$oft has so much money coming in from other avenues, it doesn't matter if they're a failure.
You need to be careful, Bill... buying up exclusive rights to enough properties will make your console a monopoly... something I'm sure you're not wholly unfamiliar with.

When xbox 2 will come out, they'll just lower the price to around £200 like the Xbox 1, and lose more money. Microsoft cant give in to the public all the time (althought its great for us public)

hmmm
u noe...i may not be a fan of the xbox. and i certainly aint no Billy supporter. but i have to give credit to M$ for not jumping ship and bailing on the xbox despite its loses. M$ has decided to stick with their console and provide their consumer base with as much support and reassurance as they possibly can.
as to your 'Xbox is sucking one now, so it's obvious their answer is "Make a more powerful console... still!' quote, it doesn't matter whether the console sucked or succeeded. Any CEO with half a brain will want to start development on their next console ASAP. its so they can try and gain an advantage over their competitors.
Sony are workin on their PS3 as we speak. and no doubt it will be more powerful than the PS2. does that make the PS2 a flop? hardly.
3DO did make a second console. the M2. it flopped majorly.
the Jaguar was Atari's last ditch effort. after that didn't work they went bust. Those aren't fair comparisons to the xbox as the xbox is M$'s first attempt at a console.

I have to admit, their customer-pleasing support is really tempting me to buy an Xbox. Foru years ago, a bug fat No would be my answer to a non-nintendo console, but I am no longer blind and oblivious (and am now 15), so four games (halo, Splinter Cell, JSR and sega GT 2000) and an xbox for £200 really gets me thinking

Okay, Sags... good point. This is M$'s first console... but look at the way things are: It's still a failure. Half a million sold or whatever? Fine... people are reselling, trying to trade XBox for PS2... etc. I know a guy that ran out, spent $500 on one to someone that had stockpiled Xboxes, and was horribly pissed off when the only game he had for half a year was Halo.
Right now, each Xbox sold makes M$ lost somewhere in the neighborhood of $200, meaning it should be a $400 to make it's money. Now Xbox is packaged with 2 average games, because they know Halo is their only console seller, and certainly not "Toe Jam and Earl: Who gives a Funk about us?"
When Atari first debuted on the market, they were a hit. Sold the hell out of those very basic games back in the day. When Nintendo came around, they were a hit (with both the NES and still the Gameboy systems). When Sega debuted, they were a hit. Granted, all three had their flops. When Atari flopped hardcore, they became a software developer/publisher. When Sega couldn't get the $$$'s anymore, they cut the fat and started making/publishing games.
If you ask me, Sony still got their start via Nintendo (Old Project Reality buisness deal), but Sony has certainly made their staple in the industry, and is now the market leader. But the going was rough for Sony in the beginning, unless you happen to like the wretched Twisted Metal series. For awhile, the PSX was falling behind the *SNES*. I can safely say the turning point for PSX was Final Fantasy 7. Then on, PSX was home to many big name games, and PSX began getting those million sellers left and right.
It's good to have millions waiting around for your new console. Sony's in it for the long run.
For Nintendo, the N64 began it's life highly anticipated... especially when Mario 64 was debuted. I bought one, because eventually the N64 came out with it's "Franchise Killers"... Zelda 64, WWF Wrestling Games, Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark... almost every Rare made game. That's what at least kept Nintendo it's fans, even if it didn't make the numbers it was supposed to.
It's hard to start with millions of gamers waiting for the other guy's console.
I am still stunned to hear it when I go to Gamestop to see the employees trying to sell either Xbox or PS2... not even mentioning Gamecube. Remember my previous report that all Gamestop store managers were given free Xboxes? Again, we've got a classic case of Bill trying to get money by putting money into the pockets of the retailers, but dispite this cheap hustle, the people still arent buying into it. I'm kinda sick watching all the "For great graphics and shit games, there's no power greater than X" ads on TV, when there's not a single game that has me excited for Xbox.
I want to play Halo... but it's coming out on PC. So screw Xbox. On the PS2 I want to play FFX, DDR Max, the Onimusha games, the upcoming Devil May Cry 2, and others. Whatever games are coming on PS2 that are scheduled for NGC, I'll buy the NGC versions... (depending on how smart the developer is) faster load times, smoother framerates, plus better multiplayer is more accessible.
Give credit to M$ for not bailing out on it's console... nah. That's bad business. Nobody should ever be given "props" for losing their company millions (billions, remember the new $2 marketing campaign for the next year?) of dollars. And something is seriously wrong if they're looking at the sheets and saying,"Well, we're losing $200 a console based on the technology we're using today, and underselling the competition, so let's spend a few million more, develop a new, more powerful console with a larger pricetag, all the while keeping online the minimally successful Xbox Live (ha, we tricked all you 56k users!). At this rate, we're sure to lose more money per console per year, and we'll most definately get more advertising money from Bill!"
My final thoughts... PS2 is in it to win it now, they've got the consoles sold and they've got the games coming out. NGC is riding up there smoothly this year, and next year, expect the NGC to explode upward, with games like the Legend of Zelda bundle, the re-release of Resident Evil 2 and 3, Ghost Recon, Red Faction II, Rainbox Six 3: Raven Shield, the million and half exclusive Capcom games, F-Zero, Mario Kart, Splinter Cell, Jet Set Radio... and basically all the games everyone is looking at on other consoles. If these games are expected to be big sellars on other consoles, it'll be a big seller on NGC.
Plus... there's still that f'n Megaton announcement... whatever it may be.

Oh my god... 4 games and an X-Box now? I promise anyone... this is the exact tactic the Atari Lynx was using before they went on the wayside. Think about it... don't get stuck with a giant paperweight...

heck don't get me wrong
i wouldn't get an xbox if Bill himself offered to give me one of his Gold edition Xbox's (j/ks)
and perhaps it is bad business to stick with something that isn't doin well. History has shown that it can lead to bad things (u mentioned Atari and Sega to name afew). but you must understand that to the casual gamer out there, who has pledged their loyalties to the xbox, they will be quite happy to hear that M$ aren't backing down. Potential gamers may be persuaded into thinking 'this can't flop. they're pouring more $$ into it' and go grab an xbox
there is no doubt that Sony are leading the market now. i believe the xbox was always in for a hard time trying to compete against the japanese powerhouses of Sony and Nintendo. but i believe M$ has done everything they could possibly do to try and make their machine a success. Exclusives (even if they are short in time span), super duper specs to wow ppl, extremely aggressive advertising, selling at a loss to try and establish a large consumer base. Tell me, what else could they have done? besides, M$ has money to burn baby!!
in any case, all im tryin to do is to point out that just because ur current console isn't performing up to expectations, doesn't mean u can't go and try and make another one. its called refinement, learning from ur mistakes and all that other jumbo. the performance of the xbox should not play a huge factor in the xbox 2. its called sunk costs. what has happened, has happened. cut your losses, and try again. thats how business works. no1 will roll over and die because one of their products doesn't go well. and if they do, then THATS bad business.
i might not b too fond of the xbox, but it does not necessarily mean the xbox 2 will suck or will do poorly. i try to see things with an open mind. :D
stop laughing u punks.
