After Sony Revealed their next generation console, the PlayStation 3, on Monday many gamers were left wondering just how much the powerful hardware would cost. Recently an article surfaced in the Mainichi Daily News stating that Sony officials have said the PlayStation 3 will cost less than 50,000 yen.

“The new machine, which will have a higher performance capacity than personal computers and provide sophisticated movie-quality images, will be priced at less than 50,000 yen each, according to officials.”

Fifty-thousand yen is roughly equivalent to 465 dollars, which would place the console much cheaper than many had feared; however still much more expensive than the Xbox 360, which many expect will carry a $299 price tag.

Sony and Microsoft are really trying to capture the "mature" and "hardcore" market with these prices. Soon only the rich will have consoles...

Not even in the 20 something range or even 30 something range unless they were absolutely nuts!

If Nintendo lands a $250-300 USD console, one of two things could happen:

1.) Ownage.
2.) "It's cheaper so it's worse! I'll save my munee for the PS2.5!"
3.) I stab the writer for that site for acting like Microsoft is their only competitor.

I hope it's not number 2.

If the other systems are over 350 I think number 2 doesn't apply

If the other systems are over 350 I think number 2 doesn't applyI'm all for having high tech things. I just don't think consoles should be treated like hardcore custom gaming PC's when it comes to pricing.

It's getting to the point where I don't wanna shell out money for harware anymore.

My current gen hardware is working fine and it prodces excelent visuals IMO. Why must we rush to the next gen?

If we continue to go forward, I want it to be worth it. I was alright with the SNES to N64 cause we made a major change in the way games are played (2D to 3D). N64 to GC was fine cause we could see a noticable difference. Everything was smoother, cleaner, polygon counts shot through the roof. What are we getting this time? More realism? Look at RE4 how much can you inprove on that? Look at Halo 2, what's left to make prettier?

Graphics aren't going to push me to buy another console. I don't want prettier games, I want fun games. Unless the new consoles offer something I can't have and can't live without on the current gen, I'll stick to my old games.

The Revolution will have over 20 years worth of downloadable Nintendo games from the Nes, Snes and N64. It is also backwards compatible with Gamecube.
I think this is an amazing idea and when people get bored with today's generation of games, they can always go back and play the classic games which we have grown to love.

You mentioned 3 things, not 2.
Anyways, didn't the gameboy beat its competitors (who had better technology and graphics) by having a lower price an better games ? Just sit back and watch as history repeats itself, answer numbah 1 fo sho'.

If Sony and Microsoft put up their high prices, and, with Nintendo known for keeping their prices low, I think Revolution could well beat em both!

Don't count on it. The Gamecube was cheaper than the Xbox and the PS3 when it was released, but it's still sold the least of all three consoles. People won't just go and buy the cheapest console, they'll buy the one that has the most games they like, and the one that has the most features that appeal to them.

That's just a 50 USD difference. Revolution will probobly cost $300 tops. PS3 will cost $465. That's an $165 difference. You could buy 3 Revolution games (or 2 maybe... *gulp*) for that extra money, as well as buy (if you have to) $15 worth of old games. Instead of what? An ugly system with slightly improved visuals and some other crap you already have?

Most people do believe MS is their only competitor. Nintendo seems like they're in their own little world. Where sales suck.

PS3 won't exceed $450, but don't believe that price for a minute. I wouldn't be surprised if it launched for considerably less than that.

360 should be $299, and I'm expecting about a $249 for Rev.
