View Full Version : Sony selects RAM provider for the PlayStation 3

Elpida Memory will be supplying DRAM for Sony's next console.

According to a Bloomberg report, Japanese manufacturer Elpida Memory has revealed that it will be supplying DRAM memory for Sony's next video game console, the PlayStation 3. Elpida also revealed that the DRAM it will be supplying uses Rambus technology. Elpida Memory is a joint subsidiary of NEC and Hitachi, and it specializes in the production of DRAM.

We'll post more on the PlayStation 3 as additional details become available.

Rambus Tech in the chips? The royalties they will have to pay to RAMBUS tech will jack up the price of it. Oh well, I hope the bandwith on them is huge.

not really, sony has conections... Granted not as good as microsoft.

still it doesn't tell us much, we don't know the amount of ram used.. That's what stops slowdown and improves texture quality after all...

It does not matter if sony has "Connections" or not. To even use the tech the Memory maker had to pay a fee to Rambus Inc.

Keep in mind though..More memory does not always = better.

The speed of the memory , as well, has a big part in the preformance factor. Current DDRG3 tech will be the next memory in select video cards and what not. As for a main system memory..Dual channel DDR -RAM is already faster than current RDRAM.

S-Ram is always faster than D-Ram becuase it never has to be refreshed!

Exactly. It's not cheap though. I'd like to see a unit run soley on it. GC has 24 MBs of it.

I forget the traslation method..But Nano seconds on RAM is converted into cycles (Hz).
