Arguably the best thing to come out of Britain in the 90s (apart from Oasis ), single handedly sold the PlayStation in the UK and the 8 year old series is still going!
Since the release of WipEout Fusion on PlayStation 2 in 2001, there's been very little news on a new WipEout game, apart from WipEout Pure on PSP. It's possible that Studio Liverpool (formerly Psygnosis) have been developing this for the PlayStation 3 for some time now, possibly as a launch game in the west, it's innevitable that PlayStation 3 will have a WipEout game, WipEout is the symbol of PlayStation in the UK.
So, how would WipEout be on PlayStation 3. Stunning, ships smashing up in mid air bouncing back at you along metal surfaces, narrowly missing your own piloted ship. Dodging a missile from behind and hearing it whoosh past your top right through the Surround Sound.
And what about multiplayer? 20 or more ships all controlled by players across the world with voice communication and Prodigy blazing in the background.
WipEout on PlayStation 3 should be pretty good.
I would love to see another Wipeout game, and it would look incredible on the PS3. Thing is I sort of lost my faith in the series when they released Fusion on the PS2, because it was really the same old thing. It was a good game, but certainly wasn't as groundbreaking as the first one was on the PS1.
This may be slightly off topic, but they should release some updated old classics from the PS1 on the PS3. Of course there will be fanboys stating that it would just be a way for Sony to continue making new installments of old series' in order to make a shit load of money. Also stating that it's unoriginal and uninspiring, but who cares if it's a good game? If I thought Sony were going to bring out a new ridge racer (going back to it's classic arcade roots) I'd be very happy.

Does anyone remember G-Police on the PSone? Anyone heard anything about G-police 3?

I've heard Namco's new R: Racing Evolution is supposed to be pretty disappointing. I'd love a new arcade Ridge Racer, but the arcades seem to be dying :(
I loved the very first G-police game, they were the days when psynosis (is that the correct spelling?) were making some great games. :(

arguably got that write , youd be suprised at wot games came outa britian. i mean 1 way of another depending on wot this law sute / cout case revils the GTA idea came from britian and so has plenty of other gr8 games. but yes wipeout is fantasitic and i beliv that theres plenty of ways on which it could be improved like having true ag racer modification infact as a team u should be able to make your own. also track damage would be nice and realtime scrapes and minor damage on your ship as u fly it

The original Wipeout was good at the time, but the most recent game was a bit disappointing.
Perhaps it was because I was quite young when I first played Wipeout, but I thought it was amazing... Really did introduce the playstation to me and I kept saying, "This is what 32-bit gaming is allll about..."

Fusion was a bit dissapointing because it took so long for the developers to finish the game. If it would have launced with the system it would have been a best seller for a launch game.

The worst thing about Fusion was the framerates. I could never play a 2 player game without horrendous slowdown. I liked it a lot (never played the original) and would like to see another, I just hope the technology is there to meet multiplayer standards.

The first was good because it featured a rarely seen gameplay.
After that it became a drag and old. Better came out and so it died.
May still be fun as a handheld...

The PSX ones were good fun, in my opinion, but I think a lot was lost with Fusion. I'm with Insanehboy, though - it would have been accepted a lot more if it had launched with the PS2. (It probably wouldn't have changed too many reviews, but it would have made a big difference in sales.)

On the topic of WipEout, hasn't a WipEout game been confirmed for PSP?
Hatchman
01-05-2004, 05:40 PM
Yes, I believe it is confirmed for the PSP which = awesome! :D But yeah, when I first played the demo of the original WipeOut for the PSX back in '95, I was like  . I said about the same thing that specialpro said, "this is what 32-bit is all about!" It was the sole reason, at that point, I bought a PSX. So, I believe that they should develop the next incarnation of WipeOut as a launch title for both the PSP and the PS3. Oh yeah, and G-Police was a great game! Anyone remember Colony Wars?

could ppl stop calling the ps a psx because it is not, psx wwas its codename and not its name, calling it psx will just confuse u and others when the psx comes out in europe and the states in around a year

Well, I personally HATE calling it the PSOne so that's why I like to use the term "PSX", but I understand the reasoning behind people NOT being able to distinguish between the upcoming dvd/TiVo/HDD/PS2-hybrid and the original PlayStation. I guess I'm just too Old School 8) .

Yeah, I try to call it PSOne whenever I remember, but I got used to saying "PSX." I'm not sure who's in the majority, but personally, I like sticking with PSX. (And it doesn't help that they're both a silvery color.) One thing, though - it's good to point out that the PSX technically isn't a new console, like a PS3 or anything. And it's not common to hear someone talking about PSX (The new one.) compatibility issues. I suppose it could depend on the situation - for this topic, we're talking about a series that started on the PSOne, so it would be easy to assume that "PSX" is referring to the old console. (But personally, I wish Sony had named the new PSX something else.) :P

I for one loved the first two Wipeouts. They were the stuff. If they made an on-line Wipeout, but with customizable ships, like on the level of Gran Turismo, with parts, paint jobs and ability to trick out your ride, then I would get excited. It would have to have more than most on-line console games players too, like say up to 30-50, all smashing and bashing each other with missles and emp blasts. Ahh, that would be awesome.

With WipEout Pure (PSP) having online play and downloadable content, maybe this'll give us a clue as of what to expect from a PS3 version.

The ships had the same flying mechanic as a helicopter but it was not one but yea it was a fun game. I remember those tunnels that accelerated vehicles to light speed between colonies.
Hey, I picked up Wipeout 2097 for £3.95 on Amazon. It was second hand, but it's in mint condition. Oh the joy.
Absolute bargain, nice one.
what is up with the stupid games??.. all you have to do is buy madden and your straight. i mean wtf..??? ya'll wasting money on dumb games.. so basically what im saying is ya'll waist about $150 a month on games.. ya'll can take that fucking money and buy a modchip and rent games and burn them shits or use the money to pay for a car.
Notice they're talking about the PSP. not PS2, and my modchip in my PS2 burned the system out. And you're not rick james...You're just a wanna-be chappelle, it's not even funny. You killed it.

The original WipEout was all about fun, that's what made it so popular and gave it mass appeal. Mad pumping soundtrack, crazy art designs, funky looking courses.
With Fusion everything was taken too seriously, basically the fun feel from the original and the modern stylish approach of Wip3out was taken away. It was far too conservative, everything from the box art to the opening sequence to the terrible character designs.
Like everything else we enjoyed about the 90s, its been taken apart and turned into souless garbage. Hopefully WipEout Pure on PSP will get back to basics and take the developers into the next generation with their heads "hopefully" not screwed on

XL was the best. What I personnaly hope for is a Wipeout on the level of XL. With awesome graphics and a pumpin electro-techno sound track. But, I want them to bring it to the next level. I said it once and I'll say it again, I want customisable vehicles like Gran Turismo. That would own. Invent all the parts that make up the anti-grav cars. Then invent a money system for the game to buy the parts, just like GT. New engine and weapons would be some good ideas. It would add depth to the Wipeout experience. Then add a very very large on-line feature with on-line lists of times and who is say, #1 that day, and you will have a dope assed game. It would get competative on a whole new level. Then have downloadable new tracks to add even more fun. Heck, having fan made tracks to downlaod would kick ass too. So much one could do with the series and still keep the Wipeout spirit alive. The world wide Wipeout community! :D

Did XL have that Prodigy tune? It was called "WipEout 2097" over here in Europe, so maybe you Yanks had a few changes other than just the name.
The only thing about Firestarter on Wipeout 2097 which inraged me was the fact that it was the instrumental, I wanted to hear keith losing it on the mic! (Was that the guys name?)

That is the one my friend! :D Super kool game that is. I guess they did just change the name. Hey, but what is in a name? It was the game that counted.

I wanted the vocalized version as well. I really hope that when they put songs in the next game they leave all the vocals in, just like GTA:VC. That game had to have the best soundtrack of anygame that I can remember. Sweet! 8) I wonder what ever happened to Prodigy? They kicked ass and should make a comeback. Go on tour with Nine Inch Nails!
They've sorta lost their touch, I did hear a new track from them and I personally think that it's excellent. It'll not have the same impact that some of their classics did mind you. I heard that Keith left the band, cus most people thought he was a bit of a prick. I'm not too sure though.

Sad, oh well.
Back on topic. I would love it if they had characters with personality that one could use in the races. Like in SSX. But make the characters customizable like an RPG so everyone on-line has their own look. Then make it have voice to voice commincation so we could talk smack to each other as we burn and blast each other on the track. That would all be sweet!!!

I love my copy of Wipeout 3 SE. It is simply one of the best looking games I have come across and it makes me sad that Sony hasn't managed to take the Wipeout Series where it should have been. Wipeout Fusion is not a true Wipeout game imo. Wipeout had such an incredible style and it's still one of the most modern games out there.
The studio behind Wipeout 3 was the SCEE Leeds Studio (formaly Psygnosis). Sadly Sony closed it and i think SCEE Liverpool is now handeling the Wipeout Games. I don't have a lot of hope that they could get the original team back together and give us a true Wipeout game.
I know a lot about graphic design and believe me "The Designers Republic" is essential for a Wipeout game. It is really amusing to see how they try to recreate the Wipeout style but fail miserably.
One of the guys who designed Wipeout 3 is Micheal C. Place.
check out
http://designbybuild.com/ and http://www.thedesignersrepublic.com/
if they are going to give us a true Wipeout 4 they need to get this guys involved big time.
Wipeout was always about low res graphics and if there is going to be a Wipeout 4 on the PS3 they should realize that it shouldn
t look realistic. They should rather concentrate on adding crazy math inspired course animation (like some of the animation in REZ is).
check out the old Wipeout 3 website done by Kleber (tdr affiliates)
http://www.kleber.net/wipeout3/ and imagine what a true wipeout sequel would look like.
I think the chances for getting a another true Wipeout game are slim.
one can always hope though :/
PS: I spit on Wipeout Fusion and its terrible cover and style...
