It has been a while since we’ve heard from the Wipeout series. The most recent release, Wipeout Fusion for the PlayStation 2, was released back in 2001, sadly it didn’t really capture the style that made the previous Wipeout games such smash hits. Now, Sony is planning to release a new Wipeout game on the PSP.
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/9761/aae.jpg
Footage of the new Wipeout Pure was shown at E3 2004. Though not much footage was shown, the game looked reasonably solid, showing a typical group of Wipeout-styled racers screaming down the track.

A Wipeout game, but with multiplayer over the 802.11 WiFi. Say, up to 8 players blowing up each other. Naw that would be fun!

Sony said 802.11.. not 802.11b (WiFi). 802.11 meens networking (includes WifI, but allso regular "wired" connections.. is a generic tearm)
I assume the 802.11 is a typo.. they ment 802.11b, but that is a guess/assumption. Not a gaurantee.
This responce is not focused at axia777, it is for all who don't know.

How many racers were there on WipEout Fusion?
Yea the N-Gage has online play. I'm sure that Sony could take something from their collaboration with Ericsson to help online play along.

Just watched a video of this from the E3. Was fairly vague and was mixed in with footage from other PSP games. Looks decent though, slightly resembled WipEout 3.

I must say that the video they showed of WipeOut looked quite good, I might actually try the game this time around. Wireless LAN multiplayer is a delicious alternative to split screen gaming. If you noticed, a lot of the games shown in the video would have much better multiplayer on the PSP then they could on a console due to not sharing screens. Prime examples are: Armored Core, Wipeout, Tony Hawk, Dynasty Warriors, and GT4.
I take it GT4 doesn't have the i-Link feature from A-spec then?

I take it GT4 doesn't have the i-Link feature from A-spec then?
On the Ps2, maybe but probably not seeing it would be obselete because of the online feature.
On the Psp, defenatly not: 802.11 wireless gaming...
i was just responding to Danji's comment about games sharing screens for multiplayer. He mentioned GT4, so I assumed by that that GT4 wouldn't include i-Link.
i-Link seems to be pretty redundant now anyway, there are only a few games that have ever used it.

I'm guessing that it'll use a USB cable for multi player, not sure about online play though.
Perhaps you could use the 802.11 for MP rather than USB 2.0?
NickSCFC
05-13-2004, 12:40 AM
I was on about link up, not online play.
Wouldn't you be able to use it for close-range MP anyway?
solidus
05-13-2004, 01:02 AM
Yes the 802.11 is for the possible online play and link up with other systems like another psp.

Hopefully PSP will have a head phone socket as not to upset Nan when Chemical Brothers is played full blast.
Here, here! Wipeout usually has a pretty bitchin' soundtrack (esp. XL)
2097 had the best soundtrack, the third one was also good because they got Sasha on board to select the tunes. Xpander being the best song on Wipeout 3... Ahhh, the memories.

Taken from Edge magazine's interview with SCEE vice President, Phil Harrison...
Edge: Is there anything specific being planned for the first wave of titles?
PH: We're going to be designing additional levels for Wipeout Pure that can be downloaded vie Wi-Fi. Hopefully a new track every month after release.
Edge: What's the proposed payment model for downloadable content like this?
PH: In this case it will be absorbed by the cost of the game.

I wonder what the soundtrack will consist of... Ohhhhh... The excitment. They better not bog it down with shite, I want to hear some decent underground music. I could take a guess you know and tell you which artists are most likey to go into it, but I won't. Because I could be wrong.

Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Underworld, all great, Wipeout will have up to date music though, which certainly means no Prodigy
Yea, I would say that the Chemical Brothers and Underworld would be on it. Which is a shame really, there are better less known dance acts out there you know, to have to listen to the Chemical Brothers and Underworld again on a Wipeout soundtrack might drive me barmy.
My track-listing wishlist...
1. Metro area - Orange alert (DFA mix), Cool opening track...
2. Dillinja - Never believe, Classic drum and bass track...
3. Tiga - Pleasure from the bass, a real driving/hovering song...
4. Peace Division - Beatz in piecez. VOL 1, Earth shattering house...
5. Peace Division - Seriously twisted, This is so twisted... Seriously twisted
6. Slam - Positve education, I'm very surprised this hasn't been used before...
7. Josh Wink - The bass, another song to raise the pulse...
8. Hardcell - Ground effect, Perfect for a Wipeout game...
9. Hertz - Granit, another perfect techno track for Wipeout...
10. Josh Wink - Higher state of consciousness, an obvious track which again I'm very surprised hasn't been used before...
I think that'll do it for now. Oh and anything by Phil Kieran should be used, same applies to Adam Beyer... I think that's it for now.... Hummm... It'd be nice to see ignition technican and Technasia as well. I can dream.

I can only recommend the album Nick. I heard it shortly down in my friends house and some of the tracks really impressed me. The first track released of their album, "Girls" really stands out and I think it's excellent. Have you heard the track in the background for the BMW 1 series advertisement? That's on it. It sounded like a pretty decent album!
Charly on the Wipeout pure... That would be something. :D
Sony should get their asses onto Warp records (http://www.warprecords.com/) in terms of music. This is the coolest dance label in the world and doesn't get enough credit imho for the amount of boundry pushing, original and downright weird music they push out. Aphex Twin and LFO instantly come to mind. COME ON SONY!!! NO COMMERCIAL SHIT!!!

Aphex Twin should've been in 2097, even though it still would've been overshadowed by Firestarter.
I've much more respect for Aphex Twin than I do the Prodigy, I do now anyway. I've always liked certain Prodigy tracks more than others but Aphex Twin has always proved rather consistant with me. I agree with you though, Prodigy would have completly overshadowed anything by Aphex Twin. People would deem anything by AT too stressy and obscure, unless of course they're into the deeper realms of music such as that.

From IGN:
http://psp.ign.com/articles/572/572381p1.html
December 10, 2004 - As part of its media blitz for its line-up of killer PSP titles, Sony Computer Europe interviewed each of its development teams for the games in production. IGN will have more on these games when possible, but until then, here's the words straight from the mouth of its makers on this game.
Q: We've seen Wipeout on PSone and PS2, can you tell us what is different about this game?
Colin Berry, Designer, Wipeout Pure: It's on a handheld machine! Seriously though, quite a bit is different; there are 12 brand new tracks (along with four classic tracks hidden away). Whilst some of the ship names will be familiar, all the ships are newly modeled, textured and have new handling stats.
Another important new feature is Multiplayer via WiFi, for the first time eight people will be able to hook up and race against each other using the WiFi capability of the PSP.
The weapons and pick ups have been refined, some old favourites and have been given a face lift and there are a couple of new surprises.
Zone mode, which made a successful debut in Wipeout Fusion, is back and this time it has purpose built tracks, designed specifically to enhance the Zone mode experience.
Q: So it's not just a port?
Berry: Definitely not, it is anything but. When we started thinking about a version of Wipeout for the 'new handheld machine' we wanted to create a new version of Wipeout. Doing a port was never an option. Sure, we do have four classic tracks (one from each of the major iterations of the game) but even these have been recreated from scratch and they are housed in all new stylised environments.
The team has wanted to do a handheld version of Wipeout for a long, long time and once the PSP was announced we knew we finally had a handheld platform that could do the game justice. Had we gone down the route of porting one of the earlier versions I think we'd have been cheating ourselves and the fans of the series.
Q: What new elements have you introduced to the game?
Berry: The first perhaps most crucial element is not new as such, but a return to the very early days. We have abandoned the dynamics system from Wipeout Fusion, the ships are no longer 'locked' to the track, they are free to bounce and leave the track when you move fast over the undulating surface it is a throw back to the feel of the earlier games, that was one of the earliest decisions made and the game feels like Wipeout because of it.....hence the name Wipeout Pure!
One key new feature is the way in which players get their energy back. The old pit-lane system has gone; now whenever you pick up a weapon you have the choice to fire it, or to absorb energy from the weapon, which in turn replenishes your ship's energy. This alleviates the problem of having to race half a lap tentatively as you try to make it to the pit lane. Instead you can replenish your energy whenever you pick up a weapon, making for some interesting gameplay choices: Do you fire your missile and try to take first place despite having low energy, or do you absorb the energy and settle for second place?
There are two new teams that compliment the six others that people will recognise from previous versions of the game. All the ships have been created in a way so that they all have pros and cons. We've balanced the stats so that no one ship becomes redundant and no one ship is easily the best to use on every track. We do not want the player to feel that they have to use a certain ship to win a certain race.
The ships can also perform a side-shift manoeuvre which is pretty nifty and allows the player a greater range of control on the ship. There is also an airborne move but that is remaining under wraps for the moment.
As mentioned earlier there is full WiFi multiplayer support which is really good fun. There is also the ability to swap ghost ship data with friends and to compare records. Players will have their own individual profile which will track their progress through the game and their individual game statistics, however they can also synchronise their records with friends and have both global and personal record tables.
Zone mode has had tracks specifically designed for it, which gives it an identity of its own and further establishes it as a main feature within the game. It has also been refined in the way it plays hopefully pushing it further than when it debuted.
Q: Is this created by the same team that worked on the previous games?
Berry: For the most part no, only a handful of the team has worked on any of the previous iterations. Having said that, everyone on the team knows Wipeout, knows its history and what the game is all about. It's a good mix - we have a lot of fresh ideas and approaches, coupled with an overall mentality and aim that involves retaining the essence of Wipeout. Indeed the title itself Wipeout Pure was born of the desire to return to the pure elements which made the early versions of Wipeout so popular.
Q: Are there many major differences in the development for a software title for PSP?
Berry: Initially we thought there would be, when the project was first started we thought that we would not need a huge team and that development would not take so long. However as time has gone on the size of the team has grown to rival the team that worked on Wipeout Fusion. The machine might be small, but it's powerful, and content-wise there is so much in this game we found we needed more people than we had first expected.
Q: Tell us more about the WiFi elements in the game.
Berry: There are two sides to the WiFi features in the game. The first is the main area and that is the WiFi gaming itself - current plans allow for up to eight players to compete against each other in either a single race, a league or a time trial race.
The second side allows players to swap ghost data and to compare and sync their records via WiFi. Players will be able to compete against their friends' times and ghost ships. Of course players will not lose record of their own times once they have synchronised data - they will still be able to view their personal best on a track should they so desire.
Q: Are you going to include any downloadables that can be used to enhance the title at a later date?
Berry: Absolutely, this is a big part of what we have planned for the game, and is one reason why the team has grown to a large size. Players are going to be able to download new tracks to race, new ships, new skins for the front end and new music tracks as well. This is a feature that is unique in the PSP and allows for a new delivery method for content, adding extra value after launch for its titles.
Q: As a developer, what is the most exciting element of working on software for PSP?
Berry: It's a new format, which is always exciting if a little daunting at first. Not only that, it is also the first handheld Sony has made and we are bringing a well known franchise to it, which adds weight to the pressure and expectancy, but it's a nice kind of pressure. The PSP is allowing us to do things that were not feasible on PS2, for example, the downloaded content. Eight player WiFi gaming is also pretty exciting.
Q: What features has the game got that takes into consideration the fact that the PSP is portable?
Berry: One thing that has had a fair bit of attention is the controls and feel of the game, the PSP does not have as many buttons as a PlayStation 2 pad so we have had to be imaginative when considering how the game plays and feels. It has not been restrictive but it has required some thought to get the best results.

noticed something in the medievil interview
Jackson: We're still examining the possibilities of having additional game content post release in the form of mini-games and new weaponry.Interestingly we designed and built a MediEvil style ship for WipEout Pure, so keep an eye out for that at launch!
I guess this will be one of the ship skins we can download.

while it's nice to have a new Wipeout title, it's also quite depressing to know that they will never get it right. They just can't replicate the Wipeout style unless they ask Michael C. Place http://www.designbybuild.co.uk to be involved. He was working on the Art Direction of Wipeout at The Designers Republic.
maybe they should have just stopped after Wipout 3

Kind of harsh on a game that isn't even finalized yet, no?
Games shouldn't stay the same over various generations, it would get boring.

I know exactly where you're coming from Roland, I kind of feel the same. Still, it's no reason to dismiss the current Wipeout in development as it could come as a great surprise!
