It's a portable gaming system.. Portable systems should not be played online. That's ridiculous. What you people should be clamoring for is better online games for the PS2. There's only 3 good games that I can think of coming out this year. Final Fantasy XI, Resident Evil: Outbreak, and Killzone.

me and Danji Ikari are the only ones who realize
handhelds don't work online. (not yet) though in the future for sure...

If you want to play. online go play the ps2 or the pc.(for now)

The PSP should totally be online...just think about it....
Your on the bus, or the mall, or at a friends house even; you can play games with anyone, anywhere, and anytime. Playing games with your friends on a GBA:SP is great, but how often do you find someone with the same game, and when you do how often do you just happen to have a link cable? Unless its a completely planned meeting with your friend. With the PSP being wireless you won't have to find a friend with the same game, there will be people on the network (assuming WAN capability)
best part of all, there wont have to be a 3-foot cable between the two of you (or more players; pending on the game)
I believe online capability is the best way to go for the PSP

no, because places like mcdonalds are getting wirless internet, so you could be waiting for your food and decide you want to play against someone. But I think at the very least, it should have short range wirless capabilities directly connecting two psp's

Having 802.11b Wireless is awesome for the PSP. You'd be able to play anywhere in your house or in hotspots. I think thats the way to go.

i think that online would be great because if sony were to release like say gt4psp (just an example) and you were in the car on a family trip but yet your brother has a nintendoDS wouldn't you want to play with someone?

wouldn't matter where but you would want to play with them or have some competition if you never lose to your friends or family you could have some competition from say europe or japan or something like that.

i couldnt care either way but if it was online i think that there will be usage fees because you cannot have a free service cell phone...so i guess at places like verison wireless etc... will have a special plan for PSP online play like you get pay 10 bucks for an hour then the 5th hour is free or something i dunno but its going to be expensive so id say..no cause of fees but if it was free then YEAH!

I changed my mind. I think that having a portable on-line isn't a bad idea, I just wish that more great PS2 titles were on-line. Like R&C III.

Speaking on lagging issues: all the PSP's would be identical right? They would all be running off of the same type of wireless internet. The only variations in gaming ability would be your broadband provider, ping, and the quality of your router. Even with these factors, lag should be very minute on the PSP. But I guess we will have to see what happens.

On a slight side comment: That Volcanus Online game looked really awesome. I'm hoping for a game like Phantom Crash (Xbox) and that'd make it tons of fun to sit around and play with friends over the lan and on-line.

lag will still be a problem because some people will have T1 hooked up to their router then someone with like dial up have it hooked up or something. then when you have horrible signal. like someone could be like in the computer room and another kid could be sitting on the "john" and be playing with bad signal

Wireless LAN can't work on a dial-up. It doesn't matter if they are running on a T1 because the PSP can only go up to 11 mpbs with the wireless LAN. The wireless 805.11b is the limit.

Not quite...You can use wireless on dialup but it involves setting up a computer as a server....Not to mention it's stupid. Lag will still be an issue on some things....A t1 verses 768k dsl will matter....The 11mbps is the max...That has nothing to do with lag it's the minimum. So on my 4mb cable I will see stuff a split second before someone on 768k dsl.

That is true, that lag is the minimum, but generally playing on-line with a PSP should lag less than a PC or PS2. I didn't know you could do that hook-up and yea, it does sound pretty stupid.

I rekon 1 of the best things with PSP GPRS or wireless internet is the messenging capabilities. Imagine sitting at home and your PSP makes a noise to signafy that one of your mates has sent you a message. You check it out, and using the keyboard accessory, start chatting to him. He tells you that there's a party on, you ask him the address and he says "just check your map, i've sent the co-ordinates to your GPS".

So much possibilty....

wait...what!?

**sentence enhancer** spammers...

im going to assume you know what a GPS is, well a GPS can give you a map that outlines specific streets that put you inroute to a destination. meaning your friend can send your PSP's GPS accessory the corrdinates to how to get to the party so you wont have to read, write, or remember how to get to it you just look at the maps with the oulined roads on your PSP and follow those.

It could be nice that the gps of the ps could detect other psp, so you can...play with others...even if you dont know him :)

"Warning, A new player in the coordinates xx,xx want to play gran turismo 4 with you, accept?"

lol, Im dreaming too much xD
