View Full Version : [HOWTO] Install & Use the Azureus Bittorrent Client
Scott R. Mraz
03-27-2004, 05:19 AM
First you have to download the client:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=84122 and click on: Azureus_2.0.8.4_Win32.setup.exe unless of course you have linux or another OS.
Then download Java Runtime Environment, if you dont already have it (note - if you dont have it, when you goto click on the Azureus program icon, in the programs menu, nothing will hapen, down load this to fix it):
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_manual.jsp
Install:
Simply double-click the executable and it will install, then launch the program by going to Start > Program Files > Azureus
Once you have launched Azureus, it will walk you through a wizard to configure the client for your connection.
Next goto:
http://cp7.oktagone.com/~psinext/torrent/index.php
1) And look for the file you want to download. Then right-click > select: "Save Target As" then save to whatever folder (directory) you want.
2) Then open Azureus click: file> open > .torrent file > then point it to the directory you saved the whatever.torrent in.
http://www.pspinsider.com/img/torrent/az1.jpg
http://www.pspinsider.com/img/torrent//az2.jpg
Then point it to the path where you want to save the actual file: whatever.mpg.
http://www.pspinsider.com/img/torrent/az3.jpg
3) Sit with a smile as you download the latest ps3 video faster than a screaming chicken ridding on the tip of a space shuttle!
Configuring your Firewall:
if you are you beheind (connected to) a firewall or router, with NAT or firewall capabilities you will have to open up ports: 6800-7000 in order to communicate with our servers and Azureus clients. If you have a specific router or firewall device, post here with the Make, Model, and I will help you configure it.
If you have any questions, please post them here. Note this Howto will be continually update as need. Your feedback is apprecaited and very useful.

I dont know much about firewalls nor do I run XP, but the firewall I'm using has a pop up, asking me if I want to allow bittorrent to run. So surely the XP firewall does something similar?

no it doesn't, like the XP even its firewall licks balls. if the RIAA wanted to get pass the WIN XP firewall all they have to do is call MS up and ask how to by pass it.

LMAO! Oh dear! I didn't realise it was that bad. Well the only advice I could give to Gaming Ultima is if he still wants to run a firewall while downloading stuff, then turn off XP firewall, and install a 3rd party firewall instead!

whenever i try to put in a port number, it gives me some NAT error message. I do have a router that has a firewall. i'm pretty sure the firewall is disabled though. it's a linksys wireless access point router if that helps. model BEFW11S4. that's about all the info there. oh yeah, i'm also running XP, some maybe they already have some sort of firewall. thanks for the help.

don't know if i have the XP firewall on or off. how do you check?
From About.com:
Here's How:
1. Start your computer and log on with an account that has full Administrative privileges (eg: owner).
2. Click Start, then click the Control Panel. Double-click the Network Connections icon.
3. In the Network Connections window, right-click the connection that you want to protect or not protect with ICF (XP firewall), and choose Properties.
4. In the Properties window, click the Advanced tab, then check (check) the Internet Connection Firewall box. Click OK to make the change effective.
5. If you experience adverse effects or otherwise want to turn ICF (XP firewall) off, follow the same steps above, but uncheck (click) the box and click OK to make the change effective.
6. If you use the computer as a server (FTP or Web, etc.) you may need to change the advanced settings (button found on the bottom of the same tab as the checkbox in step 4 above.

This is from your usermanual, which you can downlaod here:
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befw11s4ug.pdf
Howto login to your router:
For your convenience, an administrative utility has been programmed into the
chipset of your router. All router-based administrative tasks are performed
through this web utility. The web utility can be accessed by any PC on the
network by typing http://192.168.1.1 into the PC’s web browser
address window.
Upon entering the address into the web browser, a password request page will pop up. Leave the User Name field empty, but type “admin” into the Password field. (Unless you have already changed the password or username yourself).
Howto configure Portforwarding:
Port forwarding sets up public services on your network. When users from the
Internet make certain requests of your network, the router will forward those
requests to the appropriate computer. The router's DHCP function must be
disabled to use Forwarding.
Forwarding is generally used to set up a web server, ftp server, or e-mail server on your network. To add a server using Forwarding:
First click the "Forwarding" tab on the web-interface, that you loggin during the above step.
1. Enter the port number or range used by the server (6800 - 7000). On the same line, select TCP, UDP or Both. Enter the IP Address of the server that you want the Internet users to be able to access. Refer to your software documentation for more information concerning which service port settings
may need to be changed, if any.
2. Configure as many entries as you would like until all of the link entries
are filled.
3. Click Apply to save the settings.

Not until Windows XP Service Pack 2 will there be a pop-up saying that it is blocking something, see: http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/windowsxp_mce2004.asp for more info.

Well, technically, its "Ok" as in you'll download, however you will download rather slow. I woul suggest you resolve the problem. I can help you fix your NAT problem as it has nothing to do with the client your using. Please tell me what firewall or home router (if it has a firewall) you are using.

So, I've downloaded per the instructions. No problem. I'm even finishing a download from another site that I was previously using a different Bittorrent application. No problem there.
Here's my question... What's next? Is there something else I need to do to be a seeder? Or is that all left up to the admin site (Scott)?
FYI, I'd tried clicking on Host and it caused two errors. I can detail those further if necessary.
Thanks. :)

i got rid of that Java..wonder if azurus works...nope need to get rid of it too then. dang and i really wanted to be involved with the site
Well you could perhaps try downloading one of the other BT clients, I assume that they all work on the same principle?
I've been having a few problems with my connection lately. I get a NAT error when I test port 6881 (the default port for Bittorrent). But I have that port open on my settings.
Also, I can't connect to the Media Guide or Radio Player on WMP, or do various other things like connect to the Steam (CounterStrike) network or search for updates for McAfee.
Any suggestions?

well, two questions.
first, i configured my router by following the directions you provided me sccott, but in azureus in port 6881 i still get a NAT error. what am i doing wrong? i'm getting slow download speeds and i think i shouldn't be.
secondly, azureus (seemingly randomly) will freeze the computer temp. then it will unfreeze, then will freeze again...once it starts doing this i am forced to reboot, if i just let it sit, it will force the comp to restart leaving me with one of microsoft's fun little "your computer has recovered from a serious error" messages. from what i understand this might be a problem with java. i'm using java Version 1.5.0-beta (build 1.5.0-beta-b32c)
i believe that when i was using 1.4 the problem was worse. any suggestions?
i'm running win xp pro.

i cant get the ports working, what do i do?
Start > Connect To > Show All Connections
Right-click on your connection, and go to Properties. Then go to the Advanced tab, and check the Internet Connection Firewall box. You'll notice that the Settings button at the bottom will become available to select, so go to that.
Then you'll get to the Advanced Settings window. Go to Add, and then another window will pop up. Name the port you're adding, enter in your IP address, and then enter 6881 in both the internal and external port number fields. You will see two check boxes to the left, TCP and UDP. At this point it doesn't really matter which one you check, as you'll have to do the same as what you've just done again, but checking the other box. For example, if you checked TCP, you will have to repeat what I mentioned above, and then check UDP.
After all of that is done, go back to the Advanced Settings window, and check the two ports you just created. Exit that window, and uncheck the Internet Connection Firewall box. Exit the settings, and it'll tell you that you'll need to reconnect, so reconnect, and then run the NAT test in Azureus.

I re-checked the firewall box to see if that would work, and now it won't try to install the program, it just opens the torrent screen without the wizard thing, any advice?
edit: I tried to download the spinningaround movie off this site, and it shows up in my azureus screen, but the download stays at 0,0%. does this mean the installation failed, or that it's just not currently available?
Do you have a router, or just a modem? If you have a router, then I think there is a different way to configure the port settings, so you would probably have to take a look in the manual. Otherwise, I'm not really sure.

If he says NAT it sounds like a router. Problebly a hardware router.
Let me explain this another way:
All appartments in a building have the same address, the individual appartment number doen't even come into play till the mail guy gets there.
look at your internet connction as the appartment building.. but way bigger..
The appartment building's address is public, but the individual appatments have private sub adresses (appartment 1, 2 ect) ... same wih computers.
If you have a gateway in your house (a router or a main computer that has to be on all the time) that is the public address.
To get to your computer in the living room, bedroom , ect,,, you have to use the NAT (network address translation protocol (SP?)) or in lay-men's terms... the SUB address. (when the mail guy gets there he looks at the boxes with numbers on them)
So.. if you have a NAT error look at your gateway (router or always on computer)... why is it not passing on the info? Do you have to set it answer all questions from a certain computer? (server-computer speak for computer with all the answers) shoud you set the DMZ to point to that specific computer? (DMZ is a play on words- DeMiliterizedZone.. but meens "if you don't understand the question.. ask this guy"....)
Actually this answer looks alittle more confusing that i ment it to be... but i hope it helps you understand the way IP works.
Ok, maybe I made the problem worse.. but keep in mnd.. it looks like the problem is where the signal comes into the house.
Scott is even better at this than me, so I hope you hear from him. (i'm a poor teacher)
Edited by Matt.exe: Don't double-post you naughty boy!
edit 2 : thanks Matt!
I re-read this thread (after scott's post, next entry) and realized you're problebly beyond the simplistic explanation I posted.. These things happen at 4 in the morning. BUT i hope we were of help. I have fallen behind this summer on who was where.. but have been happily suprised quite often.

I believe at this time, we are going to roll out most of our content via the standard HTTP services. Andrew has proven that we can support the bandwidth required for a period of time- perhaps into next year, before we will need to kick in the bittorrent releases. I will update this section with more info when the time is required. BTW i'll be e-mailing you soon, good to see you back!

Hey Kevin, I don't believe the video is still up, at this point in time. If you would like to test out your bittorrent installation, please download something from here: http://www.torrentreactor.com/
As for your NAT test, please ensure that you have followed the directions at begining of this page explicitly. It sounds, from your description, as though you dont have Java properly installed. It won't help any. You're probably already using your whole bandwidth when you download a file, and your upload speed would be pathetic to contribute to any torrent. However, some files out there are only available via bittorrent, so if you want those, you need a bittorrent client.
Is that it? ... is that a good educated guess?...is that a correct professional analysis?.....
does anyone else have something to say?.... or should I jump now?
HELP ME PEOPLE!!
( P.S. for all the smartaliks out there: if I could get any faster connection, I wouldn't be here- duh!) :D

Bit torrent wouldn't speed up your downloads when using dialup, it's mostly about helping the server deal with may down loads at once. We can send pieces of the file to you, so the server doesn't have to.
But, if we were to use bit torrent (still possable, but prolly not) you would need a compatable (free) plug in. These plug-ins are typically shareware with no timeout, but do pop up a "please donate" page, unless you pay.
No spyware, ect, just a little webpage by a guy who does this for a living.
Even if we don't decide to use bit torrent/azureus, you might like to look into it anyways.
ok, so I understand that it is of no use to have bittorrent for dial up. now, IF I had 256kbps DSL, would bittorrent make a difference or is the speed still inefficient?
by they way, can I play 'broadband only' games on PS2 with that kind of speed? or is 512kbps concidered to be the least acceptable speed?
Well it'll be a better speed than when you're on 56K. As for the PS2 gaming, I'm not 100% sure.

From what i have heard i would say that 512k is probably the minimum i would recomend for PS2 gaming i also hear yhat if you have slow connections people wont want to play you! Also i play NFSU 2 online on PC with 512k and its fine.
I know some people who managed to use 56K to play Halo online, so I guess it isn't impossible.

Everytime i want to Share something this thins come :
Adding file 'G:\Converter\3GP_Converter021\3GP_Converter022\Tr anscoding.ini'
Creating torrent for 'G:\Converter\3GP_Converter021\3GP_Converter022\Tr anscoding.ini'
ShareResource: Torrent create failed
What´s that?
ThX
Well it appears as though you are trying to create a ".torrent" file to place on a tracker and the creation is failing. I would ensure that the file "Transconding.ini" isn't in use while Azureus creates the torrent file.
Also try moving the file to a different location on your system see and then retry the create torrent procedure.

Oh thanks,
But 1 last question what advantages will i have over using bittorent all the time rather than edonky like programs kazaa etc...?
Kazaa is jumble of viruses, poor quality mp3s and useless documents.
BitTorrent allows for a more organized 'release' system e.g. games, movies. albums, software where you can be sure of the integrity of the file.
Plus BitTorrent doesn't have queues. It must be the most advanced P2P software around and is *excellent* at sharing large files with how efficient it is with bandwidth.
If you just want the odd file though, like a song or a little piece of software, there's nothing easier than hopping on Kazaa for it.

Yeah i know about kazaa and viruses thats why i dont use it instead i use edonkey... I'm going to try and get into using bittorent often though.
BitTorrent is certainly worth getting to know.
I think the best site at the moment is TorrentSpy:

Hi,
I using Linksys WAG54G wireless router at home. I have a few questions.
1) I read that I need to disable the Firewall feature in my router in order to use Azureus. Is it true and necessary? In my router, I normally enable my firewall but disable all the filters available but enable the Block Anonymous Internet Requests feature. I have no problem with ABC client.
2) Read a lot about port forwarding port 6700-7000 for Azureus. Can't Azureus work with other port range such as 24500-24600?
In the past, I'm using ABC and it is doing fine for me, download is stable and fast, but when I switch over to Azureus, everything is not right. Download speed not consistant...
WOuld be happy if somebody can help me out.
Thanks!
