"Gran Turismo Anywhere" - Gran Turismo 4 Mobile, coming from the Gran Turismo series, is the PSP version of the real driving simulator. Its product quality is not at all inferior to its PS2 counterpart, and is compatible to competition over wireless LAN, a unique feature to the PSP.
Way-hay, good to see GT4 on the PSP. I'm guessing that apart from that picture there is no info yet.....

Not many screens, but there is these promotional images. I'm guessing the visuals are the same as the PS2 version.

800 cars on the PSP too?
most likely no, 1.8 gigs is not alot to work with when your talking about a double CD Ps2 game. the Ps2 disc hold 4.7GBs
Makaveli_786
05-11-2004, 10:31 PM
The dude said 3 CD's I think so thats 700*3=2.1 GB, i still get your point though, the PSP graphics looked far superior to PS2 graphics though.

 LMAO that had me rollin, nice joke.
Hehe, good one. I would imagine that there will be around 150-200 cars. Which is about the same as the amount on the 2nd game I think.
Makaveli_786
05-11-2004, 10:47 PM
LOL, will somebody who saw the conference tell this dude about the PSP graphics, man unless I was day dreaming during the conference the PSP graphics were friggin amazing.
It probably looks fairly good because of the small resolution, but there is no way that it will be as good as the PS2 version.

well not ment as an insult, but you have been known to stretch the truth when it comes to topics about Sony. thats why id' rather wait for screenshots and movies to see for myself and be my better judgement.
Makaveli_786
05-11-2004, 10:51 PM
LOL, well I can live with that I would be a little skeptical myself, shit in fact I was skeptical even when I saw the graphics but the demos they ran were truly spectacular, anybody who saw the conference will tell you that

that case is interesting. I would have thought it would have been much smaller.
With all the features they're putting in and the power of the whole thing, they probably couldn't make it any smaller!

They might be able to fit the full amount of cars from the PS2 ver. on the PSP ver. but you could expect some dulling of textures. Textures and sound files are the largest files that a game has, no?

Whoops, sorry.
the PSP has analog??? :o
Yes.
I dident think there wee going to be that many on the ps2...500+?
The PS2 version of GT4 has around 500 cars and 100 tracks. I would say that the PSP version would have around 1/3 - 1/2 of that amount.

"In addition, Gran Turismo 4 will boast more than 500 cars and up to 100 courses from around the world."

Good point.
Besides im wondering UMD probably stores data differently right so maybe it compresses it in some way.
Also is UMD flexible as in can the capacity be increased?
I would've thought that they would come up with a way of creating higher capacity UMD's at some point. But 1.8GB isn't bad to start off with.
DappaDizzle
05-13-2004, 02:01 AM
i agree with matt 1.8gb isint bad 2 start of with the umds but in due time they will proberly increase it

The trouble is, will you buy it on PS2, PSP or for both?
Apparently you can use the same save data on both versions.
gamingmonkey2004

i think you can transfer save files so like you have to go and you plug your PSP in your PS2 and transfer the data over then go play but yea most likly get both

You can buy it in bundles including the PSp version and the PS2 version, that way when you are about to leave you can continue your game at the point you were at at your house. This is great, now I can devote more time to games.

Before, we all was talking about the car number...I think it can be...something like 400 cars, remember in GT2 in the ps1, 650mb CD, and there are somethng like 250 cars, if remember well.
So , in 1.8gb, 400 cars can fit easily, and more tracks...audio...many things!
I hope that you have to buy the car pieces, and not win them (as GBA GT)
richjwild
05-20-2004, 10:50 PM
400 cars would be fantastic, i just hope they pick the best 1s, i wonder if anything will be exclusive to the psp
gamingmonkey2004

Yes the graphics will be brilliant and they say it will be at leasst the same as the PS2.
I've seen the movies (ps2.ign.com), look it up. It is not inferior to the ps2 version.
Only because the video shown was run through an emulator. That video shown was EXACTLY the same as one of the PS2 videos circulating, graphically that is. I seriously dont think that the PSP version will look exactly like the PS2 version. It'll be good, but not equal.
gamingmonkey2004
05-27-2004, 04:02 AM
o yeah i keep forgeting that they were running those on hte PCs! dang but the PSP will be close to the PS2 graphicly right? but not exactly

ultimategamer2004
05-27-2004, 07:53 PM

I'm guessing you just connect your PSP to your PS2 or PSX with the USB cable and the PSP's Memory Stick just shows up on the PS2 or PSX's "Browser" screen as a Memory Card.
Would seem like the most sensible option. Is access to data on memory sticks as fast as the memory cards?

It's been a bit of a dull period for the PSP in terms of news lately, hopefully when we get out of summertime there should be a big tidalwave of game news :D
There will be a lot more info when we come to TGS. There will be a load of playable demos there I think. Tales of Eternia has been the only playable demo on the PSP so far, and that was at E3.
NickSCFC
06-27-2004, 02:56 PM
Would the controls be any different to the PS2 version?
Does the PS2 version make use of L2, R2 or R3?
Erm, I guess that if you use the manual transmission, then you use L2 and R2. Don't think that R3 is used for anything.....

That's been suspected, however there was one playable PSP demo (and there were about a dozen more at the recent PS event thingie) which suggests that, if it's an emulator, it's a very good and consistent one. An E3 showgoer also managed to trick MG:A into showing its main menu, from which a playable demo could be selected (the same demo that was at the aforementioned PS event), again suggesting that, if the PSPs were just screens and controls, they were hooked up to very well-behaved emulators.

Series director says hardware similarities between the handheld and console make a straight port of the racer the logical move.
TOKYO--Gran Turismo 4 Mobile for the PSP will essentially be a port of the PlayStation 2 Gran Turismo 4, said series producer Kazunori Yamauchi in an interview featured on Sony's official Japanese PlayStation Web site. In the interview, Yamauchi states that he plans to keep the same amount of content on the PSP version, but the developers at Polyphony Digital are determining what needs to be done to the PS2 version to make it playable on the handheld.
"The PSP is a portable game machine, and people may think it's oriented towards playing simple games, but it really has the same hardware performance as the PS2," comments Yamauchi in the interview. "Since we're already developing the GT4's system on the PS2 hardware, we're planning to port that directly to the PSP."
Yamauchi broadened the discussion to PSP games in general. "There's basically two ways of making games for the PSP. One way is to develop an original new game, which in general will be limited in its content since the price of PSP games aren't going to be too high, meaning the game's development budget will also be limited. We're going to be taking the second method, which is to take a system from a major title, and effectively sliding it onto the PSP hardware," he said.
Yamauchi also said that Gran Turismo 4 for the PS2 is currently still around 75 percent complete and that he plans to release it by the end of the year. Given that fact, though, it is unlikely whether the PSP version will be finished in time for the PSP launch in Japan this fall and in the US in early 2005.

is that saying he'll have to make cutbacks in the ps2 version just for ease of porting it over to the psp :?:
so cars may be left out, graphics toned down (lighting etc)

Don't see the need in pushing the PSP with all that graphical detail, what with it only having a small screen and all :)
raVen
08-08-2004, 08:31 AM
Also in the article he says he plans to keep the content the same (i.e Cars, tracks, parts, etc.)
What I think he's refering to by cutbacks are the controls Ps2 has R2,L2, right analog, L3, R3 Psp doesnt. Also some graphics have to be moved and/or made bigger to be seen easier on the Psp screen like the did with Amored Core: FF

PSP Gran Turismo confirmed as port
In news that will do no harm whatsoever to the prospects of Sony's upcoming entry into the handheld market the Gran Turismo that appears on the PSP will be the same game that is imminent for the PS2. Series producer Kazunori Yamauchi revealed in an interview on Sony's official PlayStation website that he intends to keep the same amount of content in the PSP version as the PS2 Gran Turismo 4.
"The PSP is a portable game machine, and people may think it's oriented towards playing simple games, but it really has the same hardware performance as the PS2," comments Yamauchi in the interview. "Since we're already developing the GT4's system on the PS2 hardware, we're planning to port that directly to the PSP." Yamauchi broadened the discussion to PSP games in general.
Gran Turismo 4 is apparently around 75% complete and still on course for a release by years end, but it is looking unlikely that Gran Turismo will be a PSP release game.

Told you it comes on two UMDs, infact I bet half the games will come on two UMDs, hence why they kept the standard case size. You could fit two UMS in each case, one above the other.

Good point seen as the case size is the same i supose it could be most games having 2 UMDS but some i am sure will still have 1.

I think they will split the game like like GT2 was with multiplayer and arcade on one disk and the "simulation" mode on the other disk.
ultimategamer2004
08-08-2004, 10:38 PM
its obivious that they will split the game but it is which parts will be on each disk but that is highly possible.
PS2warrior
08-08-2004, 10:39 PM
is the disk size the same as Gamecube?
ultimategamer2004

Dont know but i think that UMDS are very slightly smaller.

I think PS2Warrior mentioned in the PS2 GT4 thread that there are two lists of tracks. Tracks for Simulation Mode, and tracks for Arcade Mode. Seems like one disc will be Simulartion Mode and the other will be Arcade Mode. Like Gran Turismo 2 then.
Seems like it'll work out like this:
UMD 1 - SIMULATION MODE - 1 PLAYER

Makaveli said about 800, but then it was Makaveli :P
I don't understand how one person could talk so much shite. He was a legend.
NickSCFC

Gran Turismo 4 will have PlayStation 3 graphics. Sony achieved this by pulling their fingers out of their arses and doing something with the Emotion Engine
God... We'll be quoting Makaveli for a long time. Classic. Someone should make a thread, "top 10 Makaveliers of all time!" :)

Yeah i think it looks pretty real all the cars that would come to mind so i think thats is probably real nicly ilistrated by Nick there.
Good news for all boy racers - an interview with Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that the PSP version of Gran Turismo 4 is likely to be a full port of the PS2 game, making it a potentially exciting racing prospect for the handheld.
Speaking to Sony's Japanese website PS World about the forthcoming racing instalment, likely to be named GT4 Mobile, Yamauchi said: "As far as volume is concerned, because we're using the GT4 name, we're of course envisaging the same level of volume [in the PSP version] as the PS2 GT4."
He also attempted to diffuse any lingering preconceptions that the PSP would be 'child's play', adding: "The PSP is a portable game machine, so many will think is used to play only simple games. Say what you will, it's a new generation of portable hardware, with performance that stands up against the PS2.
He finally concluded with the promise that "...given that we're already making the GT4 systems on the PS2 hardware, we will probably end up porting them to the PSP."
Think about it - a fast night-time ride through the glitzy environs of Vegas, all compacted onto a handheld with fluidity, speed and excitement intact. It's a promise that, if realised, should reaffirm the power of the new next-gen handhelds, which has certainly had us quietly excited since E3.
Whether that will make it quite as much fun as GBA Mario Kart though is another matter.
As for the PS2 version of GT4 itself, Yamauchi said that the game was roughly 75 percent complete, with several new unannounced courses still in the pipeline. The game is set to release around November this year.
Needless to say, there are no confirmed release dates announced for the PSP version as yet, although our (rough) guess is that it will be some time close to the console's 2005 launch in Europe.

Im also glad there are so many Skylines. what is it 24? or 23? something like that. oo boy i saved my Bestbuy giftcirtificates for that game...but on PS2. anyway. it will be ironic accualy. i mean im on a roadtrip and im playing a car game..hilarious...um...sort of

Maybe, but still, GT4 gives you a very wide range of options.A car to fit everyones taste, no matter how good/bad.
I don't think there's a such thing as too many cars in a racing game, just like too many characters in a fighting game, I could be wrong, but i think it depends on the quality of cars.

yes i just hope there will be more cheap cars to start with because i remeber there was very little starting cars in the first one. i remeber i got the miata because it was hte only car that was cheap and was good. also with more cars there is also many cars that are expensive and some that you are unable to get. the annoying ---- sign really pissed me off alot and im like I WANT IT! but yes with more cars...and truck! anything can apeal to you. i mean you want a jap ricer or a american brute? its all in the player. and nick is right. there is no such thing as to many cars

I hope they implement the F1 cars and drag cars as well. The polyphony f1 race car in gt3 owns all.
alternate_ending
09-14-2004, 12:12 AM
There were far more than 6 manufacturers in the original, and it was cool, because you could choose to go to a used car dealership or new car dealership. Then you get your 1992 Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo with a 4th stage turbo kit and racing intercooler, get some weight reduction, maybe some racing tires, and then best of all, you could put all those stickers on it and make it look like you were sponsored!!!
I miss the good old days

800 cars on the PSP too?
most likely no, 1.8 gigs is not alot to work with when your talking about a double CD Ps2 game. the Ps2 disc hold 4.7GBs
 You are indeed right about the space issue in terms of dvd verses umd. However this is not such a disadvantage as you might think because the PSP screen is so much smaller the graphics do not have to be so detail thus the game will be noway near as big.
Example: Playstation 1 graphics look rubbish on a big screen however stick the same game on a small portable and it appears a lot more detailed that will be the same for PSP games and movies.
NickSCFC

Gran Turismo 4 Mobile Update
Just a few tantalizing words on the PSP game everyone wants.
October 27, 2004 - Sony Computer Entertainment has provided a tiny update on the status of Gran Turismo 4 Mobile. There's a bit of bad news (or expected news), first off. Those who had the absurd idea that this game would be released to Japan before the end of the year are going to have to wait a bit longer than expected. GT4 Mobile is scheduled to hit Japan in Spring of 2005. Of course, given SCE's history with the series, some form of delay should be expected beyond this date.
A few vague hints at game have also been given out. Developer Polyphony Digital seems to be going for something a bit different this time around, apparently aiming to reform the game at its core in order to provide something that's not available in the home. Those peeved about the lack of network play in the home release of GT4 will be pleased to learn that GT4 Mobile will make use of the PSP's Wireless Lan capabilities to allow for races against real life opponents. Specifics beyond this have yet to be revealed.
As with the PS2, we expect Ridge Racer to come out first and give us a taste of PSP racing, then Gran Turismo to follow (a ways later) with the main course. Stay tuned for more on GT4 Mobile as we learn it.

Well, atleast the analog one is sensitive..
What does the PSP's analog controller feel like?
Like the PS2's analog controller. It has the same sensitivity (resolution).
"the PSP feels comfortable in the hand, with all the buttons, and the analogue thumb pad, falling right into place. We actually found the analogue thumb pad to be perfectly situated for making our pointer fingers fall onto the shoulder buttons"

Yeah i know but i wasn't really talking about the analog stick or even the D-pad. I was talking about acceleration, brake, etc.
When you slightly press the accelerator button you accelerate slowly but without pressure sensitive buttons you would accelerate to top speed no mather how hard you press the accelerator button.

Or will it be like SOCOM2 on PS2 where you find different races online and join up and race?

Gran Turismo 4 US Version Goes Gold PSP GT Details Emerge
More fallout for the GT conference inside
Polyphony has announced that the US and Japanese versions of Gran Turismo 4 have gone gold, with all final bug testing ironed out. The final versions will be sent to production facilities ready for printing within days according to Polyphony head Kazunori Yamauchi.
He went on to make some of the most detailed comments to date concerning the mysterious Gran Turismo Mobile for PSP, about which little aside from a few screens shots has been seen.
The PSP Gran Turismo will be a little smaller in comparison with the Gran Turismo 4, but it won't be any different from the Gran Turismo series that everyone knows. I think that the key trait of the PSP is that it can be carried around and used for communication. Communication between players and consoles will probably be one of the key aspects of the console and the game.
For reference, GT4 hits Japan on December 4th and the US on the 14th in the same month. PAL copies are expected on 23rd February 2005.

Not by much. If we assume the PS2 version was designed for standard TV resolution of ~640x480, then the PSP version would be a little more than 2x smaller from the start. So the UMD version would be short by 0.55Gb.
Regardless I do not expect GT4 Mobile to be an exact copy of GT4 for PS2. I am sure they will have to cut something.
(of course I have no real idea if any of the above is correct)

Hey just wanted to tell you guys that the release of GT4 in Japan has been delayed.
So instead of releasing it on December 3rd, its going to be December 28th 2004. :(
They could not finish the game as planned. There are still a few adjustments to be made.
The game will have 80 manufacturers 700+ cars with 90 courses as planned. :D

Lets just face it..the PSP is the new IPOD of portable video games...Period.
Err, what has that to do with this topic?

Nothing whatsoever..
I just grabbed me a copy of GT3 from Gamespot for $4.75 WITH tax. Great deal since I've been playing it since I got it three days ago. I would be more than happy if the PSP version was as deep as GT3 seeing as how it would be portable.

You mean Gamestop. And thats pretty cheap. It is quite a old game though. Good game still. I haven't gotten into racing much. I will once I get a PSP.

heh i traded mine in for like 2 bucks or something small like that. ive said the story a million times so ill pass on explaining it again.
the mobile GT$ would be nice, to like port cars from PS2 over to the PSP like your file or something...still wanna know if it will be the exact same..i bet they will just cut some of the A class races because face it not to many people race those

Cool thread. Thanks for all the info. All I've heard about a Japanese release date is spring 05 if we're lucky. It's still not listed here (http://www.playstation.jp/psp/software.html).

Cool. I might actually buy GT4 then. That would be a first. I never bought just played the GT series. Not a huge racing fan.

I read somewhere that GT4 is dual layer ..9Gig's if I remember right...how ...well what a dual layer for the UMD disk? 1.8Gig's isn't going to fly....anyone know? Dual Layer for the UMD..what 4Gig's ...Yeah I can see that for the size psp is.
gamingmonkey2004
12-31-2004, 04:05 AM
i dont think it will be the exact same...or they will make two discs

I have no clue how they are going to pull it off but from the press release of GT4 for PS2, they said that it was similar to the PS2 version...I guess they are going to take out arcade mode or something...

yea have just story mode and less cars...i guess
barney_2k
01-01-2005, 02:37 AM
actaully i think i read on IGN that the UMD has 1.8 on a dual layer disc,
i cant help but start to think that on every game series that is being ported to PSP disc space seems to be an issue
it will be interesting to see how it is dealt with in the long run.

Well, if they do manage to make the discs dual layer, they would still need to take out stuff...no worry

I think they will reduce some no of cars. Texture detail will also get reduced. Lets see how they are going to handle it.
barney_2k
01-02-2005, 12:29 AM
well i am sure that they will somehow get round the space issue and still make a great game
i dont know why everyone is so worried GT4 is a HUGE game
even if GT4 portable was only half as big, it would still be a long game, with lots of replay value, and loatsa things to unlock

well i could see maybe two UMDs you know "Story" mode continues on the second UMD and it also has Arcade on it. Just an idea

maybe
but it would be a bit costly
and sony are not in the best financial system on the PSP front
so i duno
Barney

01-02-2005, 09:27 PM
it costs like 52 cents to make a single UMD. im pretty sure tehy could get their money back from selling the game.
barney_2k
01-02-2005, 09:32 PM
those 52cents add up when you produce hundreds of thousands of games
Barney
gamingmonkey2004
01-02-2005, 09:35 PM
its just an extra disc. back in the PSone FF era there were like 4 discs. i dont think two UMDs would be that costly. They could always sell GT4 a little more. Because if the games are like 39$ they could sell it for 49$ or something. Seriously it wouldnt be that big of a deal.
barney_2k
01-02-2005, 10:23 PM
yeh id be willing to pay extra for GT4
but many people may not, and they will surely loose a lot of sales through the price increase
therefore they will in the long term loose money on GT4
Barney
gamingmonkey2004
01-02-2005, 10:28 PM
but they really dont have to raise the price. Because the sells would be very high because its a GT title. And there really couldnt be anyway theyd loose money. Maybe not get as much with one. But with one disc it has less and people may not like that. See what i mean? So they are split. Save money or make everyone happy with a tad bit less profit
EMAGDNIM
01-03-2005, 05:00 PM
A price increase would only really upset a small amount of people. I know that there are a lot of GT fans that would pay what ever the price is just to PLAY the game...GT4 just got released and you should see the amount of people paying extra just to IMPORT it. An extra $10-$30 is not going to bust a lot of peoples banks...
barney_2k
01-03-2005, 11:02 PM
yeh i suppose
hopefully they will find a way to make it a great game, but still a big game
i would sure be willing to part with a few extra ££

Play-Asia is similar to Lik-Sang (Hong Kong based). I've never had any trouble with either but if you're looking for an alternative to Lik-Sang you might want to try them out. They still list PSP GT4 ship date as TBA so they haven't started pre-orders yet but you can put yourself on an alert email list so they'll let you know when they open up pre-orders.. (link (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9f-70-4lt.html#))
Another good import site is NCS (http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/results?mv_session_id=WdNr62CJ&mv_pc=395&cid=15&si d=2&alpha_id=0).

those are the ones that the pit cru wears during some of the japanese touring car demos...Thats why they package the case, shoes and shirt with the game.

Can you enjoy GT in Japanese? If you have played the other games,or do you think there is too much menus and stuff to tweek etc?
To put it short:If i get,can i play it with no big hick ups?

I'm wating for the U.S. release of GT4 for PSP. Although I'm sure you can play the Japanese version without much trouble if all you want to do is drive. The main reason I'm getting this game is to get into the tweaking and tinkering so I want to understand everything.

Well, there is a large GT community so I would say you would be able to get by. There is already a whole lot of translated screens for te GT4 PS2 release.
but I would say to really enjoy the game, you have to be able to read SOME japanese...
