Report: Sony Says 'Cell'-Based TV Ready by 2006
Tue 25 May, 2004 01:04
TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp 6758.T plans to offer a broadband television by 2006 that would incorporate the powerful new "Cell" processor it is developing with IBM Corp IBM.N and Toshiba Corp 6502.T , a Japanese business daily said on Tuesday.
In an interview with the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Sony Chief Executive Nobuyuki Idei said it would use Cell to power its next-generation game console as well as a network television that will offer functions similar to a personal computer.
The Cell processor will be up to 10 times more powerful than conventional chips and able to shepherd large chunks of information through a high-speed Internet network.
Sony has said Cell -- due to start test production in early 2005 -- will power the next-generation PlayStation game console, which will probably double as a home server, as well as other digital home electronics.
For the three business years ending March 31, 2007, Sony has earmarked 500 billion yen ($4.42 billion) to spend on semiconductor development for Cell and other key devices. In the interview, Idei also said a potential acquisition of movie studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc MGM.N would be aimed at effectively incorporating MGM's software library into Sony's film division.
Earlier this month, Sony said it was in exclusive talks with MGM on a possible takeover that would provide Sony with access to MGM's 4,000-plus film library that includes the James Bond and Rocky titles.
Seeking to allay concerns that the acquisition could dent Sony's finances at a time when it is trying to restructure its electronics division, Idei said the acquisition price would not cause people to worry.
maybe these Cell-based televisions will be PS3-capable? or able to assist PS3 consoles in realtime gaming.

what does anyone think that the price of this new television will be?
if/whe this new television releases will it require special stations(like HDTV does) in order to use it to its full potential?

Leave Jadedragon alone, hes old fashioned, damn you should have seen his pulse when he found out about Color TV's.
I dont think the cell TV will cost too much because if they do then they wont sell too well considering people need to get comfortable with this technology, a 1 T/flop chip does give a TV endless potential though so it will be interesting to see what happens, damn another 4.4 billion??
Sony have some real big plans for the cell

hmm CELL TVs will cost the same as HDTVs/Plasmas Now, once the demand rises....well it shuld rise since all TV Broadcats is gonna switch to HDTV signal by 2006, the prices should start droping.
but i know a great legit website where they have all Plasma TVs at a chepaer price, sometimes by a few thousand dollars

If that were true makalevi why wouldn't plasma tv developers make consumers "adjusted" to the technology. Its because it isnt a matter of adjustment its a matter of production costs. Its only going to be cheaper over time. Plus its not as if the cell is the actual TV display, its just the chip running behind it. That could just mean a plasma tv running the cell chip behind it, and that = mucho expensivo.

Well if theyr going to be putting the same tech into toasters you better save up for a 2 thousand pound toaster.

that kind of processing power is far from needed, they wont be putting a 1 TFLOp/s Cell in a TV. Cells arent' going to be made in only 1TFLOp/s form. you'll likely see something more convienient in this Cell Based TV.

lol, unless sony plans on trying to monopolize all house appliances to help your ps3 i dont think your microwave is going to be running on a cell chip; overkill.

right, anyway the TV will probalby only be powered by a seriously downtuned version of the cell.

It was stated that depending on what the Cell will go into and the type of task it will be dealing with will determine a number of mini-cells ranging from 4 to 16 in a single unit for that chip and particular product. In other words,we won't be getting teraflop Cells in every product Sony places them in because that much power is not needed.Something like a television set may only require four mini-cells on a single unit, while something like console will use more like sixteen due to the amount of tasks it is likely to deal with.

Yeah but even a TONED down version of the cell will be quite powerful, its an absolute monster I wonder how weak they could make it.

Correct (as always Domination), this is what Sony was saying when they said the Cell would be "versitile" the cores can range from small amounts to large amounts. i do believe that yes 4 cores will be the minuimum, but 16 will only be the maximum till 45nm tech is reached.
Makaveli stop posting the obvious then exagerating it, you spam more then even i do. and yes more then half of what you post can be considered spam. most of us are aware of the power of the cell, but you make it sound like a god send that will cure cancer, aids, and world poverty.

added resolution of a more powerfultv goes hand n hand with a powerful gaming system i think sony will try connect most of its entertainment electronics this way- I agree with this statement "Sony wants to own the market from end to end; it is happiest with a vision of a future where it owns the content creation platform (Cell workstations), the content delivery system (UMD and Blu-Ray discs), the content platform (PS3, PSX3, PSP) and much of the software market (Sony Pictures, Sony Music, SCE's publishing divisions)." but i say beware of the monopoly I.E. Pan American (Juan Trippe), Standard Oil (John D. Rockerfeller), Bell Telephone AKA American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T)(Alexander Bell) When companies get too big and hog too much of the market share consumers suffer with lack of creativity and one company ruling the business when monopolies are formed things usually end in a breakdown either internally or from government pressure and intervention.Although I agree with what they are offering i think they have to in turn stop being so stingy with thier int. Property andsuing the pants off smaller companies whenever thier toes are stepped on especially if they want huge market share over the entire entertainment and consumer electronics markets, allowing tech like Motion eXperience Interface (MXI) Operating systems to thrive on old outdated int. property

I like the HBO (DVD-anime) series better than the movie.
Even thoe I own the movie.........
The anime series was more Adult (As it should be) than the PG-13 movie.
Anyhow, Spawn should have pwned Terry a$$ for putting it to Wonda on a regular bases -states the Clown aka The Violator-
