Wow, what a motorin weekend.
For the first time, Amazon.co.uk didn't get the game to me on Friday after having it pre-ordered for god-knows-how-long!!!
Well, went 2 the motorshow. Fell back in love with the Mclaren SLR, Maybach 62. MG SV and the Porsche carrera GT (god, how i hope those are in GT4.
Then came home last nite @ 7 ish and played GT4P till 10!!!
It blows me away. The beauty of Citti Di Aria. The flowing curves of Tsukuba and the bloody balls track in New York. (Really, couldn't they make it a bit more exiting than 90deg turns lft rite and centre!!!).
Awesome... Nothing compares 2 it.. cept GT3, just coz of more cars.... Cant wait 4 GT4 now. It's gonna be awesome. First time i'll ever get to race on the Eifel Nurburgring... Going 2 set some fast laps 4 the time trial page.
Thanks for letting me yabber on about my weekend. Well, what can i say.. Bring on GT4!

Your basically saying GT4P is nothing more than a load of extra cars?
thats why I got bored of GT3, about 15 tracks - big fun (I finsihed the game though, was ranked about 6th in the completion stats for a few months :? )

Saw a lot of ferraris being tested in DVD and game credits!
Methinks we are getting an F40 etc!

Although you can tell that a lot of the tracks are just going to be the reverse tracks, like with GT3. Unless perhaps that's how many it is without the reverse tracks.

I'm going to switch to a 1MB service probably, that Bulldog one seems pretty cool.

T next-gen, PSP and more from the head of Polyphony Digital - the full unexpurgated story inside
With Gran Turismo 4 Prologue currently lighting up the UK charts, there couldn't be a more appropriate time to review our very own GT4 E3 coverage and have a quick rustle in our extensive bundle of taped goodies.
And what do you know? We've dug up an exclusive interview with gaming rock god Kazunori Yamauchi, head of Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo team. We joined him for a rare one-on-one chat about GT4, the prospects for PSP and his hopes for GT games on the next generation of consoles.
Check this out.
Interview by Johnny Minkley
One of the things you've announced at E3 is the new photo mode for Gran Turismo 4 - Could you tell us about that?
Kazunori: There are a number of reasons. The first is because the data that GT has is over specified compared to the output you would get on a TV monitor. It's very high quality. I first thought about the mode three years ago and planned for the future.
Of course I also really like photography personally in addition to loving cars; I wanted to provide a mode in which you can provide the absolute quality available in GT in some form and photo mode was the solution.
We gather you can trade your own images online with other users. Do you see this as a fundamental part of creating an online community for the game?
Kazunori:This may not be one of the core aspects of the online segment, but because the data size of the images is so small, they can be exchanged at low bandwidth. And so it will be one of the many interesting features for the online community.
Have you been onto the E3 showfloor to see what kind of reaction the game is getting? How do you feel about it?
Kazunori: Unfortunately I haven't had much time to visit the showfloor yet and see the reaction. However even with limited time, I am very surprised to see so many people in the GT area and I also noticed a lot people trying photo mode for themselves and actually trying to do the printouts, regardless of the fact that it takes quite a while to get the printout.
People didn't seem to mind waiting to get the final image and I really feel the loyalty of the people visiting the booth; I'm very thankful for it.
Is it difficult to relax with such high expectations from GT4's many fans?
Kazunori: Although I seem to have very little time to myself with the busy development schedule, I do occasionally find the time to go out and drive a car in real life out on the highways of Tokyo. Those are the times when I can relax, forget about work and just enjoy the time spent behind the wheel.
What do you think will be judged the single greatest achievement of Gran Turismo 4?
Kazunori: It's a difficult question because I always aim for a over 100 percent in all aspects of any game I create. However if I had to pick one I would have to say the actual driving simulation is its greatest achievement.
With the next generation of technology almost upon us, how do you hope to use that to push the envelope of the driving genre?
Kazunori: Let's take the category of car physics: currently in GT4 on the PS2, the calculations for car physics are done sixty times a second, the same as the framerate. But with the next generation coming and higher specifications, we think this could change to 300 times per second or even 600 times per second.
Those changes will be significant in how players relate to car physics, car simulation and feedback. Another aspect is the graphics: for GT4 it's nice, it's very pretty... For a game.
Yes, just a little...
Kazunori: But again in the next generation the target will obviously be to bring that to another stage, another step, where it will be prettier than reality. What I mean by that is, for example, take the environment and atmosphere seen in the Grand Canyon course. There's times when you can see the same scenery with perfect lighting and maybe only once in a hundred years do you see something like that.
We have the advantage of being able to provide that in a virtual world and that supercedes reality in those terms. We hope to recreate a very beautiful atmosphere with the advantages of next generation technology.
What do you think of the PSP and the possibility of bringing the GT series onto it?
Kazunori: Regarding the PSP, I'm very intrigued by the PSP itself as an object. It's very intriguing, very appealing.
Of course I would hope to release GT4 on PSP as soon as possible, but at the same time at full specification. What I don't want to do is lower the specification or remove features to fit it onto a handheld. I want to make sure it's a full specification GT4 on a handheld console.
Are you confident that can be achieved?
Kazunori: Currently yes.
Finally, many have tried to recreate the success of the GT series but they have failed to live up to its extremely high standards. What is the secret of your success?
Kazunori: I can't be sure; it's a difficult question. But the team and I have always concentrated on improvements, always constant improvements, and this has been carried forward with GT4. It's been ten years now and I think this has grown to a state where the constant aim to improve has become a natural feature of the team. That may be the answer.
But you still love cars, even after all this time?
Kazunori: I think that might be the real answer to your previous question! [laughs]

it was confirmed that Ferrari and porches (though I’m guessing RUF will be hehe) will not be in GT4, but it was said that its certainly possible that they will be for GT5, also they were prob testing them so they have all the data now so when they do GT5 they don’t have to spend so long getting data from older cars and they have more time for newer cars ....

GT5? I can't imagine what this game's going to be like. It's going to revolutionize driving games forever. Well we have to wait for GT4 first before we think about GT5.

Sadly, we won't see some vehicles in the mix in 4. When asked about two specific car makers, one German, one Italian, a reluctant Yamauchi answered, "Ferrari and Porsche, [aren't] impossible, but in terms of GT4, it won't happen."

I think they did all they could with the PS2 hardware in GT4, but they could only do so much, there are still only 6 or is it 8 crs on the screen? There's no real light effects from the car lights in the night races and the annoying bitmap look. Anyway on the PS3 I'm sure they'll fix that stuff and add real wind, rain, inside of the car, and MORE VIEWS!
I hate having only 2 views! It drives me INSANE!

I've always liked to see my car when playing driving game. But if they had an in car view I'd definitely use it. I'm sure thats one of the things they'll add for the next-gen version of the game. Polyphony probably wants the most realistic in car view or non at all.
I've never felt very comfortable using the first-person view in racing games. I prefer being able to see everything around me. I've been using the far view on Prologue.

I always use the view farthest away from the car, which is 1 of the things that a me in GT3 was that it has less different views then GT2 did

I played Burnout 3 about a week ago at the Motorshow 2004 at the EA stand, it doesnt look too good.
Killzone and MGS3 alongside Half Life 2 and Doom 3 will probably battle it out.
So much for keeping it to GT4 eh?
Seriously, as you two guys seem to post the bulk of the stuff on this forum, can you try and keep things on topic as much as possible. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not here all the time, so post sensibly, and keep on-topic.

Yup, definetly keeping it GT4, I wonder if theyll delay the game this time around too, seems like it could be delayed again.

They've delayed them all. With the amount of work that PD put in, it's not surprising really.
Makaveli_786
06-09-2004, 11:07 PM
500 cars and 100 tracks, then theyve got to make the cars handle like real and the tracks 100% legit.
Have you got a copy of Prologue? If so, watching the bonus DVD is very interesting. Shows the kind of process that they go through with each car.

Makaveli_786
06-10-2004, 05:50 PM
I dont see why it wouldnt...
Physics has more to do with maths than graphics and the PS3 is capable of more mathematical calculations than the majority of supercomputers around the world, that should give us a realistic driving experience.
They dont need to touch graphics up too much too, itll probably all be 100% photo realistic graphics but that isnt very far from what the PS2 is doing with GT4.
Seems like theyll have pretty much all the PS3's power to aim at physics, should be amazing.

True but you would be suprised on how much better screens look than the in game graphics even if they are in realtime.
julps31
06-10-2004, 06:08 PM
GT is one of the only games series I could see being totally photo realistic next-gen. Maybe the little details in the screens will give the fact that it's a game away but when you play it it'll probably be a different story. I can't wait. 8)
Makaveli_786
06-10-2004, 06:10 PM
When in motion a game looks much more realistic, lag gives it away, thats the only thing that might give GT4 away but none of the GT games had lag so I dont see it being a problem.
ultimategamer2004
06-10-2004, 06:12 PM
Yeah overall it looks more realistic but it dont look as good as screens a little worse but not a load but it is visable sure you must have noticed.
Makaveli_786
06-10-2004, 06:15 PM
I dont think youve ever played GT3 on a HDTV...
Get one of those things that connects your PS2 up to the PC monitor and youll see what I mean, it looks better than the screens.
When you look at a TV its only kicking 640x480 resolution and most screenshots are kicking twice that so when you play it on a TV you dont see near to what the game is capable of...
Imagine GT4 on a projector
ultimategamer2004

NO i aint i would try on a PC if i had a very good one but should be getting a new TV pretty soon. projector would be mint but they cost loads i have seen them way over £2000 and thats to much for me :!:

What about competition for GT4?
I am a big GT fan but in all honesty I cant even think of anything touching GT4, I honestly cant see any competition for this game :?

Man the online play should be amazing, I hope you can sell cars online.
In fact wouldnt it be nice if you could mod your own cars the way you wanted to with a program, it seems like customizing the game online is getting very popular.

£5 a month or is that for every month you have it with them like a 1 off payment i hopr bt do somthing like that but i am spending to much money on PS2.
Makaveli_786
06-10-2004, 09:00 PM
5 quid a month... you have to have 1MB connection to buy it too, they charge 35 quid for the 1MB and 5 quid for PS2, thats 40 quid monthly...
Soon theyll be upgrading 1MB to 1.5MB though... not bad for 40 quid..

CGI? why the hell would GT4 have CGI in it?

Makaveli_786

NickSCFC
06-12-2004, 07:05 PM
Plenty of new names in that course list, I was disappointed by the lack of new tracks in GT3, so all these new courses are very welcome.
What do the stars next to the tracks symbolise?

06-12-2004, 09:43 PM
500 cars that you can mod and so many tracks.
Aside from that the real thing thats going to give GT4 a really long life is online play.
I just hope they release a mod pack so you can modify cars and play around with tracks, a lot of PC games are going custom and it works immensely well for them in terms of longevity.
ultimategamer2004
06-12-2004, 09:47 PM
Well GT3 was long ebnough for me i mean what can you ask.

ultimategamer2004
06-12-2004, 09:50 PM
yes it will take months to complete if you play lets say 1 hour a day but you wont be able to cus u r on here almost 24hours a day.
If you play it for long enough, you start to just breeze through it. I had the flu for a week, so I ended up going through every single endurance race on GT2 in 2 days I think.
ultimategamer2004
06-12-2004, 10:02 PM
thats quite good considering that some on gt3 dont know gt2 last for 2 hours.each..
i heard you are doing exams.
Exams, who told you that? Don't even have any exams this year.....
Makaveli_786
06-12-2004, 10:05 PM
Yeah once you get a tuned car yo can blaze through the tracks quite easily.
The endurance tracks do usually take a couple of hours to finish. By the time I had got to doing them, I had some stupid amount of money. So all you had to do is buy the best car you could buy for that particular race, and then arm it to the teeth with NA or Turbo.
Makaveli_786
06-12-2004, 10:09 PM
Its really fun making your way up though :D
Sure is. Although it gets a bit tedious when you're 15 laps in front of 2nd place.

Have any online modes been announced, if not then what do you want?
NickSCFC
06-12-2004, 10:52 PM
Basicall up to six players can race in one off races on any course, voice communication only in the lobby. Nothing else has been confirmed yet, though we're told to expect car trading and leagues.
They probably won't release too many details until we get closer to the launch. Perhaps online features are still in development.
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 03:37 PM
Man they should start releasing a few more details, the launch isnt that far now :?
It is for us. That's probably why they gave us Prologue in the end, so we'd stop winging about not getting the game :)
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 05:05 PM
Theres supposed to be a disc flying around with 2 cars and tracks from the final game itself, Toyota were giving them away in a bid to sign up for information about their cars.
Doesn't really seem worth it, as Prologue gives you 50-something cars and 5 tracks.
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 05:09 PM
But this is the final game, theres a lot of things they changed and the cars look a lot better in the final one too.
Hmm, well, I'll be off to my nearest Toyota dealership then! :)
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 05:36 PM

Any idea about the soundtrack yet?
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 10:02 PM
Well by the time we see this game we should already have a HDD so well have our own soundtracks.
NickSCFC
06-14-2004, 10:11 PM
Man that Cardigans tune on GT2 just fitted perfectly, I think there was a remix for the intro too, so was the Manics tune on the intro on GT1. Was a little disappointed with the music in GT3, Feeder are great don't get me wrong, but it just wasnt as great as it's predecessors.
Going on past GT soundtracks, which up to date music would fit in with GT4?
Makaveli_786
06-14-2004, 10:14 PM
Well theyve got a ton of new tracks and a bigger game overall too, why dont they combine all the music from the last games and mix it with some new tracks.
NickSCFC
06-14-2004, 10:27 PM
We have to move on :D
It was great having the best music of their respective years on the first two games, but you have to move on.
Ever heard the Moon Over The Castle tune from the Japanese series?
Anyway, I'll see about compiling a list of tracks from the past GT games.
They usually have a good variation of tracks in the games. Not sure what kind of stuff they'd put on it though.
NickSCFC
06-14-2004, 10:38 PM
How about Jet, they seem decent? Ash and Supergrass have some new stuff out. The White Stripes are pretty decent too.
Ash have been on a few of the other games haven't they?
NickSCFC
06-14-2004, 10:45 PM
I'm just trying to think of new stuff that'll fit into Gran Turismo, I'm sure you could help :D
It's not really my kind of music, though I don't really mind it.
Makaveli_786
06-16-2004, 04:17 PM
As long as its got a nice vibe like in the previous 3 GTA's I dont really care what kind of music it is.
NickSCFC
06-16-2004, 04:19 PM
GTA's.
Not as bad as PSR. Earlier I was trying to thing of what new stuff would fit in with previous GT soundtracks, I came up with The White Stipes and Jet, that's about it
Makaveli_786
06-16-2004, 04:23 PM
Who said I wasnt talking about GTA, they all had great music
NickSCFC
06-16-2004, 04:26 PM

06-16-2004, 04:27 PM
Exactly, damn some GTA:VC music in GT plz.
NickSCFC
06-16-2004, 04:29 PM
Nah, I'd just like some up to date stuff that follows GT's style.
The music was probably the best thing about Vice City, who wouldn't want to drive around listening to Crockett's Theme or Toto - Africe
Hey! Don't know the gay 80's music, it ruled!
Makaveli_786
06-17-2004, 02:33 PM
Man I thought it was a little gay too but it fitted in really well with the game.
julps31
06-17-2004, 04:47 PM
Yeah it really did give you that i'm in the 80's feel to the game. They had all the classic 80's sound tracks. Gran Turismo would be a good game to let you make your own sound track if you have a harddrive. I couldn't imagine GT having a hip-hop or rock sound track by default.
Makaveli_786
06-17-2004, 05:01 PM
Good point, I think by the time GT hits a lot of us will have a HDD though so it shouldnt be a problem.
julps31
06-17-2004, 05:11 PM
Anyway, I think the jazz works since the game isn't super fast like need for speed. Smooth music for smooth gameplay.
Makaveli_786
06-17-2004, 05:20 PM
Yeah but dont forget theres different kinds of races.
Some require straight up raw speed while some like the all nighters will have you driving all night.
The night ones will be good with Jazz music as theyr long and dont need any breakneck aggressive speed while Rap would be good for the short tracks where you have to be aggressive to win the race.
julps31
06-17-2004, 05:23 PM
True. I don't know if plyphony knows music like R*. It would be artist we never heard probably.
Makaveli_786

Yeah thats true but the music is always a nice touch.
Oh yea, I know what you mean. Since GTA3, the music in the GTA games has become more of a feature, but in a game like GT, it's not something that I would consider to be a main feature.

Why do TommyKaira only have two cars on the list? If you visit their website you can see how many cars they tune. I think Gran Turismo 2 actually had a lot of Tommy Kaira cars which were based on other cars, such as the Nissan Skyline. Check out their website...

Not too many but it is unlikly we will get too use them all in a while
Yes it would definetly take a while to save up for all those cars but it is something to look forward to.

True it will take ages with so many races and the last one was long i still aint finished it
I haven't actually finished it myself, and it's unlikely that I will. I'm not exactly the patient gamer. The only Gran Turismo that I have ever completed is the first one, which, at the time was quite a long-lasting game.

I think GT4 is going to break the 100 million barrier for the PS2 and way beyond this year, the game looks fuckin spectacular and man the response, this game is going to sell like hotcakes, every Xboy I know is drooling over this game, I still cant believe how big this game is going to be.

Why? They have Forza to look forward to instead.

Why would they? Those few dev shots? There has been nothing announced for this game so what's there to look forward too??

Not read any of the previews then? Anyway, I was replying to Naz's stupid comment.

I read alot of previews and all of them said this will destroy Gt4, bla bla bla bla....
Obviously all X-box sites. At clearly objective previews they don't have many things to say...

you play games... you drive GT
What on Earth's that supposed to mean?
other driving games are ment to be flashy pritty with groovy tunes and wildly imposible physics and gimicked out cars ex... NFSU, PGR1+2 all of EA nascar games
to most folks GT is never truly realised. you would have to have been a hardcore gearhead to get it at the level it was intended AND have got some tracktime in. in fact the devs where not sure it would evin sell that its target market was to small but thankfully they always did good on the grafix so the rest of the gaming world picked it up.
what im saying is most folks dont understand what GT is...
its a gearhead thing you would't understand :)

Well, not necessarily...
Polyphony are trying to (and to some extend "have achieved") create an experience so real that even non-gearheads can appreciate. And being the biggest selling console game in history, I'm sure there's not that many gearheads! But what I am sure of, is that there's that many people out there that would love to experience the thrill of driving these "exotic" cars, and the only/best way to do it without selling your mama to buy one, is to experience it ("play" just doesn't do justice to the game) on GT.
That's what I reckon anyways...

I would have to agree it is the most realistic driving game on any console at this time.

Sure it's one of the most realistic, but I wouldn't say that I found it the most fun, compared to games like Burnout, Sega Rally and Ridge Racer it just feels tiresome.

yes it is far from the most frun i loved burnout.. GT series can be a bit zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz GT zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz at time i think.

Games like Burnout are better because they're a little removed from realism. Gran Turismo sticks rigidly to realism, so sometimes it's more fun with the big crashes of Burnout.

Yes that is very true i think burnout is the best racing game for pure fun!
GT4 is good but a little boring.
Well, call me a big fat bore then. But I prefer GT4 to Burnout, Full stop.

Heh, never played Burnout, but me and one of my buddy like to get together once a week and give GT3 a go. He ALWAYS seem to beat me on the second lap for some reason .

Unlucky!
If your in front on the last lap just dont try to hard or you will probably crash..
Another thing is the speed limiter when you hit a wall at high speed i think you shouldent have to hit it that hard to get one cus you could just drive round on the wall!
