This may make it official, video games are now as main stream as they can get.
It was announced today that Columbia House, the largest marketer in direct entertainment marketing in the U.S., has signed a consulting agreement with game publisher Majesco. Together the two companies plan to sell video games to the 11 million Columbia House member that currently use the service for DVD and Music purchases. The first part of the new strategy launched today, June 11 2003.
Majesco will act as a consultant to Columbia House, while helping the company secure the rights to sell games from current game publishers throughout the world. These titles are said to include new titles, close-out titles, as well as titles on the "greatest hits" programs for each of the three major consoles.
The initial launch of approximately 100 titles has gone out today to members of the DVD Club. Starting in mid-July, Music Club members will begin getting information on how they can use their Columbia House membership to purchase video games.
"We're excited and our members should be excited," said Scott Flanders, chairman and CEO of Columbia House. "Our research shows that there is a significant demand for video games among our DVD and Music club members. The marketing and selling of video games makes sense on many levels -- extending our product offerings while significantly improving our members' experience. It's a very natural progression of the Columbia House business, and we believe Majesco is the right partner to help us implement it."
"We are excited to work with such a well-respected company as Columbia House in providing their 11 million consumers with great interactive entertainment," said Jesse Sutton, president of Majesco. "Columbia House has a tremendous offline and online presence, and can tap into its historical purchase data to create highly targeted promotions. Their enthusiasm for video games is understandable, and with Majesco having one of the strongest distribution channels in the video game industry, our partnership is a perfect fit."
