I'm a programmer working in the game industry.

On one of the game developer only message boards, I ran across a poll to see who was developing for what nextgen handheld platform. I found this interesting because Nintendo was flaunting such huge support from game developers. The results of the poll were kind of interesting.

----------------------------------------------------------------
What next generation handheld are you developing for?

Nintendo DS
5% [ 3 ]
Sony PSP
43% [ 23 ]
None
39% [ 21 ]
Handhelds suck!
11% [ 6 ]

Total Votes : 53
----------------------------------------------------------------

Granted, there were only 53 total responses, but the numbers were rather surprising to me, given nintendo's press releases.

Just thought I'd share.

As always Nintendo has the main producers like Sega, Konami and Capcom pledging support for the DS, that's what's of most importance.

It is true that the major video game developers will be making games for both systems, I would love to see the PSP become a developers system so that homebrew games and programs can be designed for it and used by the community.

Hmm... that's actually quite interesting.
Although most likely, many small developers are developing for the PSP in hopes that the PSP will be more popular, thus more sales of their game. So many of the votes may be from smaller company developers.
Now, as Nick pointed out, the Big Devs are what really count to boost the sale of a handheld.

"Handhelds suck"?

What sort of developers' forum is this?

I think the "Handhelds Suck" option was more for the humor factor. Lots of game dev forums tend to be pretty informal. This particular poll came from thechaosengine.com.
