Today when I booted it suddenly kept giving me Disc Read Errors.
But these only occure with all my ps2 dvd games.
games on CD are still read.
I know it is a common problem with the PS2. But is there anyway to fix this myself?
I got a Version 4 PS2.

I tried doing a search on the forum but I got to many results to even start looking ammong them for an answer.

You could fix this yourself, although I would advise against it unless you know exactly what you're doing. The problem is the voltage going to the CD part of the laser assembly.

I fixed this in my own machine, but when one of my friends got exactly the same problem and tried to fix it himself, he toasted the laser assembly in his machine.

Check here (http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/ps2_disc_read_error.txt) for an explanation of what needs to be done.

Heh, well as I said be careful. Failing that, make sure you can put it back together so it looks right, and Sony will send you a refurbished unit for a small fee.

I was getting a lot of DREs with my old PS2. To my surprise all I needed to do was to lubricate the silver rails the laser slides along. What did I use? Olive oil!

I tried every possible stand of that white gear. DRE on every try.
Think the voltage is screwed up. And the sites i check all said "dont attempt on a V4 or higher" mines a v4.

Any DVD gives the DRE error on every attempt. So guess the life of this PS2 is over.
Guess ill get a new one tomorrow.

If you wait a couple weeks the PStwo should be out.
I'm probably gonna get one considering my PS2 is so old, and the release date on PS3 is still TBA(+1year out).

I thought about getting one of the "Special Limited Edition PS2's", but I wasn't really lik'n the colors!!!
They should have done something with a cooler feel. NOT SO BRIGHT!

Question:
Is there an area on the serial number(or elsewhere) that tells you the version number of your PS2?
Mine is pretty old, but I'm not sure which version it is. Thx in advance!

What the heck is wrong with just writing "version ten" or "v10" on the machine?

The version isn't an official name from Sony, I believe it's the name that people (especially mod-chippers and mod-chip manufacturers) give to a PS2 unit to differentiate it from other PS2 units.

Example: PS2 launches! A little while later a New redesigned PS2 comes out, therefor to separate the 2 units, the orginal will be called V1 and the new one will be called V2, and the process will continue when another redesigned PS2 unit comes out too!

I used to have problems with disc read errors till' I found this (http://www.g4techtv.com/xplay/features/45797/PlayStation_2_Disc_Read_Error_Fix.html) guide and fixed it

Good luck, and don't break your precious PS2

I have the PS2 version 3 and the first time I got the DRE(8 months ago) Sony let me send it in, and they fixed it for free(except for shipping charges)!
That was nice - THX SONY!! :D

I have been receiving the DRE's again and decided to fix it myself...
I think I turned that gear one and a half times around(two notches per turn), but it finally read all three formats![DVD,CD,PURPLE DISC]

Now I'm back online playing swBATTLEFRONT. Thought I was gonna have to wait for PStwo.... AWESOME!!!

... so much for that warranty sticker

Yeah, check the link that I left on the first page of this thread. It sounds like an electrical fault. I'm assuming you have one of the earlier PS2s.
