2d lives on in the hearts of gamers everwhere...
The current replacement for 2d is cel-shading, however, I think it'll give way to a retro gaming period coming up... nextgen gaming's getting too big for it's own good, and when the bubble bursts, only the hardcores will be left...

No I wouldn't say it is dead, look at Viewtiful Joe and the likes. Though certainly it isn't that big of a market anymore. It's not that terrible either, you guys who want to play 2d games play snes, nes, megadrive or whatever. This generation is 3d based. Not worse, not better, just different. It's not like you lose something. It's still there, but just not in this generation.

One of the BEST 2D Games I've ever played is DBZ HYPER DIMENSION for the SNES and CHRONO TRIGGER

2D is definately not "dead". AT least not yet... Even I make a few 2D games when I have nothing to do. However, in the general console world, games like "Mario Platformer" simply won't make the cut. People these days are all after graphics and eyecandy, and not to mention "realistic" gameplay. You simply can't deliver that in a 2D restricted world.

You can. All you need to do is make very detailed sprites and backgrounds.

I agree with you.But now not much of the graphic Desighners are interested in 2D.So in coming few years 2D is definitely Dead.

Well, 2D has mostly been "kept alive" by the Gameboy Advance. Though there is a new Gameboy in development, we can expect it to have some 3D capabilities. As for consoles, we can always expect the occasional "3D Side-Scroller," such as Klonoa or the disappointing Mega Man X7 segments, and sprite-based action titles, like Alien Hominid, to show up, but these games are quickly being pushed aside. So, if you really want 2D gameplay, buy a Gameboy. (Or, better yet, buy an NES, Sega Genesis, or SNES.) Neon Sentry said it best, though; My best memories of video games come from the classic 2D titles - Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire II, Mega Man, Contra, Chrono Trigger, Starfox, and all those other great 2D games.
So there you go.

Games like that simply can't be delivered in a restricted 2D realm. Nor can complex espionage games such as Splinter Cell, MGS, etc... On top of that, there would be no FPS in 2D.

You can use detailed 2D to simulate 3D. Systems can calculate hit detection with the 3D engine, but display things in layered 2D images.

Of course... 3D is... well, "2D" on screen. All it's doing is drawing polygons in precise order with precise shading/texture to make you think it's actually "3D". However, your screen can only display "flat" thing (a.k.a. 2D) so everything you see on your TV, Monitor, whatever is simply 2D objects drawn to look like 3D. However, what I'm talking about is using a strictly 2D ENGINE to try and make complex and realistic game that we see everyday in 3D; THAT is impossible.

Of course. I'm not talking about TV's being 2D. I'm talking about visually rending 2D sprites or flat 2-polygon surfaces that strech/skew/spin to simulate depth. And have the 3D thingy calculate hit detection.

I never said it was strictly 2D. I said it was graphicly rendered in 2D or used 2-polygon characters. I never said there would be NO 3D engine. In fact... I said there WAS one.
And have the 3D thingy calculate hit detection.

Looks like there's a misunderstanding on both of our parts . Before that post, I said: "However, what I'm talking about is using a strictly 2D ENGINE to try and make complex and realistic game that we see everyday in 3D; THAT is impossible."
What I was saying was that pure 2D games cannot portray the realism in a true 3D game, not games with 2D graphics built on a 3D engine.

Fighting games like Street fighter have done well in the 2D realm, and there is no reason why they should stop, but the art design and animations need to be completely overhauled. Capcoms foray into taking Street Fighter into the 3D realm, Street Fighter Ex, was highly unsuccessful because it pretty much sucked and lacked the fast and smooth action that its 2D breathern had.
Guilty Gear has kept to the idea of 2D fighting and has done very well. The games are insanely fun, especially when playing against other people.
I only wish that Samuri Showdown would make another appearance in the US with overhauld animations and art design because that particular fighting game series was excellent (Samuri Showdown 4 was my personal favorite; I have not played the fifth game).
