Namco Brings RPGs to DS
Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos to hit Nintendo's new portable.
December 01, 2004 - On the eve of the Nintendo DS Japanese launch (five more hours!), Nintendo updated its Japanese software list with a couple of big surprises for RPG fans. According to the list, Namco will bring Baten Kaitos DS and Xenosaga DS to the DS.

If you don't keep up with the console RPG scene, both of these titles, developed by Namco subsidiary Monolith Software, are epic releases on their respective platforms. Xenosaga has remained a PlayStation 2 exclusive in its first two installments with Baten Kaitos currently being available exclusively for the GameCube.

Nothing is known about the DS versions of the games, but as a first step, just knowing that they exist will make purchasing a DS early Thursday morning all the easier.

I am rather stunned by this as well. I wonder what is going on behind the scenes to cause this to happen. Could it be that Namco is taking a wait and see attitude toward the PSP?

Namco Big on Handhelds
The company reveals its plans for Nintendo portables for this year and next.
December 01, 2004 - Namco has announced the formation of a new handheld division at its company, and the titles that will be brought to life from the group this fall, winter, and in 2005.

The first game out of the gate is the just released Mr. Driller Drill Spirits, a continuation of the company's Mr. Driller series, this time on the Nintendo DS. This version of the action puzzler puts the Nintendo DS' dual-screen and touch screen capabilities to use, and offers multiplayer support via the system's wireless connectivity.

Next week comes Ridge Racer DS for the dual-screen handheld. This racer offers full analog steering support through the touch screen, and offers up six player races that only require one copy of the game for the network. We'll have a review of the game as soon as it ships.

For the Game Boy Advance, Namco will bring a new version of its Ace Combat series to the handheld. Ace Combat Advance casts the player as a pilot in the United Air Defense. As the newest recruit, they must help the UAD to destroy the Air Strike Force and bring General Resources Ltd., an evil worldwide economic superpower, to its knees. The game will feature an overhead perspective in a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground environments. 10 different planes are selectable and unlockable in Ace Combat Advance's 12 missions. The game will ship in February 2005.

Also in February on the GBA comes the North American release of Klonoa 2: Dream Champ Tournament, the official sequel to Klonoa: Empire of Dreams released on the GBA in 2001. The new adventure combines platform, puzzle and adventure elements, where players must race against time and other dream travelers in the Dream Champ Tournament to collect stars, sun and moon fragments and become the ultimate Dream Champion. Klonoa 2: Dream Champ Tournament offers five new puzzle-packed worlds where players must use boxes, bomb boxes, switches, goomies, springs and scales in their quest for glory.

Pac-Man Pinball is a new, exclusive Game Boy Advance game (exclusive if you ignore the recently-released cellphone version) where players must whack Pac-Man around a pinball world eating dots and ghosts. It will feature multiball play by throwing Ms. Pac-Man in during the action. Watch for a release sometime in the spring of next year.

Finally comes the first North American appearance of Mr. Driller on the Game Boy Advance: Mr. Driller 2 ships for the GBA ships next year, and will offer multiple modes of play including Mission Driller, Endless Driller, and Time Attack Driller. The GBA version will also support the link cable for multiplayer

No kidding, at the least they should be releasing titles for both systems. This smells pretty strange to me. It is almost like Namco doesn't want our money. :?

I think Namco is trying to profit most out of both system with the less risk as possible. Its already expecting a lot of sales with Ridge Racers. By making Xenosaga for DS, if PSP is flop (which i dont think is very probable) they will have compensate with DS and vice versa, if both goes successful good then good for them.
In other words, its less risky for them to put money on both system than rather all in one.

I still have a bit of hope it will come out, I'm hoping Dappa is right and they will annouce something closer to the PSP launch. I just can't believe they would form a whole handheld division just to make games for the DS. :?

Maybe they just havent announced it yet for PSP since itll take longer to develop being that the PSP is superior in graphics ;)

I think maybe they are waiting for guarenteed sales. The DS has already proven its selling, but the PSP hasn't. Once the PSP starts to sell, we may hear of games for it. Either way, I think Nintendo may get more AAAs this cycle; from what I've seen the DS has alot more popularity. But we shall see.

well...i dont have any comment to that because i know N has us down on this one because of a legacy and being released first. Just one thing about the PSP games...WHERE THE F*CK IS NURBS? it was suppose to round everything to not have jagged corners...but yet the screen shots have games with edges and crap

Maybe NURBS will suck the battery.
Maybe NURBS isn't being used conventionally, but rather for its on the fly model changing.
Maybe the developers spent too much time watching pr0n to have time to complete NURBS in games.

Point is, how the hell should we know!?

Possibly, but, as of right now, there have been no reports denying the presence of NURBS. So it's possible they'll turn up again, but, at this point, it's possible NURBS could have been scrapped.

I think we won't see NURBs until the 100% designed for PSP titles show up. A lot of the current title are not ports but they do build on existing tech/content.

yea i guess so. like when games that are not launch titles come out they will take the time and use NURBS...lol i typed NURMS

What! Enix has alot of games for the Playstation and so does final fantasy.
Enix has the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series on PS2 and you know about final fantasy :D

I know they will make PLENTY of games for the PSP. They are waiting to see the result of the PSP. I hope when the PSP comes out it sells millions!! :D

This... is fucking horrible. Xenosaga... is one of the only games I even play nowadays. I fucking worship it. I preorder Jenseits Von Gut Und Bose 7 fucking months early and this is how they repay me?!?!?!

I swear to fucking god, if they fuck me over like this, Namco can be fucking sure I'm never even gonna touch a fucking Tekken arcade machine again, just to spite them

This is the fucking worst news I have ever heard about the PSP

Seeing as how the reviews are in for RR DS.... I wonder how Namco is taking it? Wasn't RR DS supposed to be a somewhat big hit? I don't know. It got a fair and a 7.5 from Gamespot and IGN. The screenshots that IGN posted for the review is absolutely atrocious. :? Compared to the PSP one. Also I watched a clip of a guy driving with the stylus.... doesn't look too fun. Guess I'll have to try it out first hand to actually be able to comment, but so far it looks pretty bad.

I hope Squaresoft Enix comes out with some games for the PSP. Wouldn't mind a Xeno game (Personally I wouldn't mind replaying Xenogears with good graphics). FF is coming out in a year or so, so I wonder what games they'll come out with in the future..
